Hopeson Adorye, Head of Operations for the Movement for Change, has made a shocking revelation that the petition to remove former Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Charlotte Osei was orchestrated at the Jubilee House, rather than being initiated by an individual. Apexnewsgh reports
Adorye shared this information on Accra-based CTV’s OMAN GHANA NKUSUO morning show, hosted by Yaa Titi Okrah, while discussing the recent petition seeking the removal of EC Chair Jean Mensa and her two deputies.
The recent petition, filed by Ofosu-Appiah Daniel, accuses the EC leadership of constitutional violations, incompetence, bias, and actions that have eroded public confidence in the Commission.
The petition also calls for the removal of Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs; Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations; and Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the Commission’s board.
Adorye claimed that the trend of politicizing the EC began under the New Patriotic Party’s administration when the party allegedly engineered the removal of Charlotte Osei.
He argued that Charlotte Osei should have remained in office until retirement, just as Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan did, instead of being dismissed before the end of her tenure.
Adorye suggested that the President should appoint a neutral person, such as a lecturer with no political ties, who can serve until retirement, as Dr. Afari-Gyan did. He also called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that the next EC Chairperson is a neutral, non-partisan figure who can serve a full tenure, preventing the frequent changes in EC leadership whenever a new party assumes power.
Charlotte Osei, in a previous interview, shared that she wasn’t surprised by the events leading to her removal from office in 2018, describing it as “a whole drama from the petition till the end”.
