Youth Organisers from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region have made it clear that they do not support a recent press statement endorsing Minister for Energy, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, as the running mate to Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general elections. Apexnewsgh reports
A statement issued by the group highlighted that the alleged endorsement of the energy minister, known as Napo, was not a collective decision of the entire youth wing in the Ashanti Region. They emphasized that only four individuals signed the statement, which did not represent the 94 Constituency Youth Organisers in the region.
During an appearance on Wontumi TV, Nana Sarpong of Kumawu Constituency clarified that the youth wing’s recent meeting did not include any discussions of endorsing a particular candidate for the upcoming elections. The main focus was on strategizing for victory and preparing for the Electoral Commission’s Voter’s Registration exercise.
Gideon Otchere Darko, Youth Organiser of Offinso North Constituency, echoed the sentiment, urging the leadership to allow the flagbearer to make decisions regarding the elections and his running mate. He emphasized the need for restraint in making such endorsements without proper consultation.
Emmanuel Amponsah, Youth Organizer for Atwima Kwawuma Constituency, confirmed that he was not part of any meeting where the endorsement of the energy minister was discussed. Bright Nyampong, Youth Organiser for Obuasi West Constituency, also stated that no significant discussions regarding the endorsement took place during the meeting he attended.
Overall, the dissenting Youth Organisers stressed that the alleged endorsement was the result of individual actions and did not reflect the collective stance of the Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser. They called for unity and proper consultation within the party before making any decisions of this nature.
