Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has made a startling allegation that some Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) workers deliberately sabotaged the government’s efforts to digitalize revenue collection. Apexnewsgh reports
Speaking at the AGM of Anti-corruption Agencies in Africa, Dr. Bawumia claimed that individuals within ECG’s IT unit introduced ransomware to disrupt the digitalization process, causing the system to collapse.
Dr. Bawumia recounted how the monthly revenue remained stagnant at GHC450 million, prompting him to initiate a digitalization team to address the issue. However, the team encountered sabotage from within, as workers introduced ransomware, crippling the system. National security intervention was necessary to identify and apprehend the culprits.
The vice president expressed disbelief at the audacity of the saboteurs, who demanded a ransom to restore the system. “Can you imagine? They submitted a bill that we should pay for the system to work,” he exclaimed. The perpetrators were eventually arrested, and the system was restored and digitized, resulting in a significant increase in collections to over GHC1 billion monthly.
Dr. Bawumia’s allegations highlight the challenges faced in implementing digitalization and anti-corruption initiatives, even from within the affected institutions. The incident underscores the need for vigilance and robust measures to prevent such sabotage and ensure successful reform efforts.
