Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry nominee, has made a passionate appeal to the United States government to rethink its decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. Apexnewsgh reports
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, Ablakwa expressed Ghana’s disappointment with the US withdrawal, describing it as a significant setback to global efforts in combating climate change.
Ablakwa emphasized Ghana’s active role in climate negotiations and noted that the US withdrawal has disrupted international cooperation on climate action.
However, he reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to advocating for a stronger global approach to addressing climate change. “We will continue to urge our big brothers and sisters to come back to the Climate Change agenda,” he said.
The US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, which was formalized on November 4, 2020, has been a contentious issue globally.
The accord aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Ablakwa’s appeal comes on the heels of the US’s second withdrawal from the agreement, which was announced on January 20, 2025.
Ablakwa stressed the need for the international community to remain united in tackling climate change. He urged world leaders to commit to a new global order that prioritizes climate action, ensuring a sustainable future for all nations.
As Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry nominee, Ablakwa’s stance on climate change reflects the country’s commitment to addressing this global challenge.
