A French court has decided to lower the life sentence of Kunti Kamara, a former rebel from Liberia, to 30 years in prison for his involvement in Liberia’s civil war that took place three decades ago.
Kamara had been found guilty of crimes against humanity and violence against civilians during his first trial in 2022 after being arrested in France and was initially sentenced to life in prison. However, he appealed against the ruling.
Despite the reduction in his sentence on Wednesday by the Paris criminal court, Kamara was once again convicted of war crimes. The prosecution had pushed for the court to uphold his original life sentence.
Kamara had been a regional commander for a faction of the United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy that had fought against the National Patriotic Front led by former President Charles Taylor. The civil war that raged on between 1989 and 2003 resulted in the deaths of over 250,000 people.
The decision by the French court highlights the continued efforts to bring perpetrators of war crimes to justice, even decades after the atrocities took place.
