The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have issued a joint statement cautioning commercial passengers against paying unapproved transport fares. Apexnewsgh report
This warning comes in light of recent concerns raised by passengers following a 20% increment in transport fares announced by drivers in the Western Region last week.
In their statement released on Thursday (11 April), the two bodies emphasized that the fare increment was illegal and contrary to the administrative instrument on the review of public transport fares in the country. They informed the public that proposals for a fare increment have been submitted to the Ministry of Transport for consideration after a meeting with the Ministry on Wednesday (10 April).
The statement further added that once a consensus is reached with the Ministry, the public will be duly informed about any approved fare adjustments. Therefore, passengers are advised to ignore and refuse to pay any fare that exceeds the existing fares set by the authorities.
The GPRTU and GRTCC reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all transport fares are in line with the approved guidelines and urged commuters to report any instances of illegal fare increments.
