Gregory Afoko, the brother of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Afoko, has been granted bail by the Accra High Court after almost ten years in detention. Apexnewsgh reports
Afoko, accused of the 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, was granted bail by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, with conditions including a GH₵500,000 bond and two sureties, one of whom must justify with a landed property.
This development marks a crucial milestone in Afoko’s prolonged legal battle, which began in May 2015 after Mahama suffered a fatal acid attack. Afoko’s initial trial concluded in April 2023 with a hung jury, leading to a retrial. Notably, the prosecution did not oppose the defense’s bail request, acknowledging sufficient proof that Afoko could meet the bail conditions.
As part of his bail conditions, Afoko is required to report to the police investigator bi-weekly. His brother, Paul Afoko, has expressed willingness to stand as surety. This bail grant comes as a relief to Afoko, who has spent nearly a decade in detention awaiting trial.
