Concerns have been growing over the unreturned Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) used in the last District Levels held in Ghana by the Electoral Commission, sparking worries about the readiness of the EC to retrieve these crucial electoral tools.
Both the main opposition National Democratic Congress and stakeholders have expressed apprehension about the situation, emphasizing the importance of resolving this issue promptly to safeguard the integrity of future elections.
The NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, in a statement posted on his Facebook wall dated March 22, 2024, has called for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure the sanctity of upcoming elections. He specifically highlighted the recent theft of Biometric Voters Registration (BVR) kits, raising concerns about the security and management of electoral equipment.
Many are urging for impartial investigations into the stolen kits, stressing the need for transparency and accountability within the electoral process. The delay in addressing the issue of unreturned BVDs has raised doubts about the commission’s preparedness to conduct free and fair elections, according to the Director.
It is imperative that the Electoral Commission prioritizes the retrieval of the unreturned BVDs and provides opportunities for unbiased investigations into the stolen BVR kits. Without transparency and accountability, concerns about the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system will persist.
