In a promising development for the Upper East Region, the Minister-designate, Donatus Akamugre, is set to usher in significant changes if confirmed. Apexnewsgh reports
Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, the Upper East Regional Communication Officer, expressed strong confidence in Akamugre’s ability to address the region’s pressing issues, stating,
“He has worked in the region for his entire youthful life. I can’t remember him working outside the region at any point in time. So, he is familiar with the issues confronting the region, and if given the opportunity, he should be among the first people thinking on how to solve them.”
Salifu highlighted several challenges, particularly the ongoing Bawku conflict, which continues to pose significant security concerns for the region. He also mentioned that the Kandiga conflict has found a permanent resolution and that the Bolga conflict has eased following a mutual agreement to seek legal intervention.
However, the specter of the Bawku conflict remains, and Salifu emphasized the importance of Akamugre’s role as the upcoming REGSEC Chairman. “I am happy that the President himself is committed; nonetheless, he has to collaborate closely with the presidency and the committee the president will appoint, especially the Otumfo committee, to ensure a sustainable solution.”
On January 9, 2025, President Mahama nominated Akamugre, a long-serving secretary of the Upper East Regional Party, alongside other notable figures such as Ali Adolf John for the Northern Region and Ibrahim Tia for the North East Region.
As anticipation builds, the vetting of Mr. Akamugre is scheduled for January 27, 2025, at 3 PM, where he will have the opportunity to present his vision and plans for the region’s future. The residents of the Upper East Region are hopeful that Akamugre’s extensive local experience will pave the way for effective governance and resolution of enduring conflicts.
