John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to significantly cut the presidential budget if he wins the upcoming December 7 polls. Apexnewsgh reports

The funds saved will be used to finance a groundbreaking “no academic fees” policy for first-year university students, estimated to cost between GHS270 million and GHS290 million.

Addressing a crowd in Juapong on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Mahama criticized the current administration’s spending habits, citing wasteful expenditure that could be redirected towards education. He highlighted the president’s travel budget, which amounted to GHS69 million in just nine months, and a single cabinet retreat that cost almost GHS5 million.

Mahama argued that the presidency’s annual budget, which has soared to GHS3 billion, could be trimmed to support the initiative. He pointed out the disparity between the cost of the proposed initiative and the substantial budget allocated to the presidency, currently standing at GHS2 billion annually.

The “no academic fees” initiative is part of Mahama’s broader strategy to reduce financial burdens on students and make higher education more accessible in Ghana.

He reassured that this policy would not affect government subventions to universities, promising to increase subventions and ensure timely payments to help universities balance their budgets.
