On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah Yeboah announced his intention to request daily hearings for the case of Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM 1. NAM 1 is the former CEO of Menzgold Ghana Limited, which is now defunct. Currently facing 39 counts of fraud and money laundering charges, the proceedings for this case have been ongoing for several years. Mr. Tuah Yeboah emphasized that the proposed daily hearings aim to expedite the legal process and provide closure to the victims affected by NAM 1’s alleged fraudulent activities.
“We are of the humble opinion that this is a matter that we must apply to the courts for an expedited hearing, so, at the case management, we will put up that application and request to the court, subject to the court’s convenience, to have this matter heard on a daily basis.”
Nana Appiah Mensah has recently been granted bail in the amount of GH¢500 million, with the condition of having four sureties. No justification is required for these sureties. As part of the bail conditions, NAM 1 is required to deposit his passport at the court registry.
This decision was made after NAM 1 pleaded not guilty to 39 charges of fraud and money laundering, along with Menzgold Ghana Limited and Brew Marketing Consult. Mr. Kwame Akuffo, his legal representative, requested that the bail condition of GH¢5 million be maintained, with no justification needed. This condition had previously been granted at the circuit court, prior to the state entering a nolle prosequi.
The Deputy Attorney did not oppose the bail application.
Although, he requested the court to take into account the significant amount of GH¢1.68 billion tied to the case.
Finally, the judge approved bail for GH¢500 million, requesting four sureties without providing any explanation.
Furthermore, Nana Appiah Mensah is obliged to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters every Thursday as a condition of his bail.
