The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a scathing attack on the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama, accusing them of negligence that led to the tragic deaths of at least 11 people in violent clashes at the AngloGold Ashanti mines in Obuasi and Newmont. Apexnewsgh reports

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, NPP Director of Communication Richard Ahiagbah condemned the wave of lawlessness and violent attacks perpetrated by NDC supporters following the December 7, 2024, general elections.

Despite the NPP’s peaceful concession of defeat, Ahiagbah claimed that President Mahama and the NDC leadership failed to control their supporters, who allegedly went on a rampage attacking government institutions, security installations, and private businesses.

The NPP listed several incidents of violence, including the vandalization of the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, the storming of the Tema Oil Refinery, and the burning down of police stations in Ejura and Attebubu. The party asserted that the deaths of NDC members in Obuasi were a direct result of the party’s failure to control its supporters.

Ahiagbah argued that President Mahama’s silence and the NDC leadership’s inaction emboldened the violent acts, and that if they had cautioned their members, the bloodshed in Obuasi could have been avoided. The NPP has called on the Ghana Police Service to launch a thorough investigation into the killings and ensure that those responsible face justice.

Interestingly, President Mahama has already ordered an immediate investigation into the Obuasi mine clashes, assuring that anyone found to have acted unlawfully will face justice.

The Ghana Armed Forces have also confirmed that military personnel returned fire in self-defense after being attacked by illegal miners.
