A clash erupted between opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), officials of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces while en route to the National Cathedral site.
The altercation followed a government announcement that the project would be commissioned on March 6, 2024.
During the 2021 mid-year budget review in Parliament, then-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta stated that the $100-million inter-denominational cathedral would be completed before the commissioning date. However, a heavy security presence surrounded the cathedral, leading to a confrontation with MPs near the new Electoral Commission head office.
Both the Ghana Police Service and the Military erected barricades, blocking access to the National Cathedral site entrance.
In response, MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa symbolically commissioned the uncompleted National Cathedral project to highlight the perceived failure of the government to finish it.
