  • UER: We didn’t receive official letter from NLC- Lambon Jafaouk

The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) Lambon Jafouk said the strike by the association is long overdue.

Mr. Jafouk made the comment in a Bolgatanga based A1 radio Daybreak Upper East monitored by Apexnewsgh.com on September 21, 2020.

On Thursday, the association issued a statement threatening to lay down its tools in demand of a better condition of working service.

According to their statement, government’s stance during negotiations did not meet up with act 651 of the Labour Law, which obviously deals with issues of good faith for stakeholders with which the association appears to have a disagreement with.

The strike since Monday has left patient in government health facilities across the Upper East Region stranded and some even losing their lives as a result.

Asking Mr. Jafouk why they should continue with their strike after seeing the effect on ordinary citizens, especially after swearing an oath to save lives, he said well, “that is where we have all gotten to, because the stands of our employers are not soft, when they soften their stances, we will all understand each other. I have said it before and am saying it again, we know very well that we are not in normal times but for the stance government has taken, is what have gotten us this far. However, we don’t want any lose any life, the reason why we give an early notice to the general public”. He said

Meanwhile, he described the news stopping them from continuing their strike action as a mere circulation from the media, because they association have not received any official letter from the Labour Commission

“We have also heard it in the media, but we have not officially been served and I think, we are law abiding citizens, if the Labour Commission letter gets to our leaders, their legal team will look at it and advice. But as we speak now, we have not received any official letter. For now, is just a mere circulation from the media”

“ We will set a team to go round a monitor and facility or member who flaunts the association directive will be dealt with according our way of doing things”.

  • We endorsed John Dramani Mahama FSHS inclusive promises- CHOPSS

The Conference of Heads of Private Second-Cycle Schools (CHOPSS) in Ghana has welcomed a manifesto promise of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to include private Senior High Schools in the implementation of the Free SHS policy.

In a state issued and signed by Naphtali Kyei-Baffour and Joseph K. Dzamesi, Public Relations Officer and General Secretary of CHOPSS respectively, the conference is particularly glad that the promise was captured as part of the manifesto promises of the NDC.

The statement said, “We believe that this is the only way the problem of access to secondary education, which gave rise to the double-track system of education can be solved. We believe that a public-private partnership of this nature is a win-win for the Ghanaian government, Ghanaian children, and Ghanaian educational entrepreneurs. This policy will protect many of the 335 private senior high schools in Ghana and protect over 10,000 jobs in the private secondary educational sector.

It will give more options to Ghanaian children as they can choose to attend a private school near them or a public school. Finally, it will reduce the pressure on government in its attempt to build additional infrastructure in public schools.”

The conference has, therefore, suggested that just as government partners with private health institutions to ensure that a patient can visit either a public or a private health facility when sick and, through the NHIS, the bill is paid, the same way the government should allow the Free SHS grant to follow the student if that student opts to attend a private or public SHS.

The conference further stated that, “We reject the suggestion that all mainstream private high schools or all private schools that do not charge fees in dollars are substandard schools. We have private schools that have better facilities than public schools and that have over the years outperformed public schools. We also reject the attempt to suggest that it is unconstitutional for government to partner with private schools to provide educational access to Ghanaian children. We believe that there are common grounds that are absolutely constitutional that can be reached to allow for partnerships with Private Senior High Schools.

We therefore call on the NPP Government and all other political parties to commit to working with CHOPSS to ensure that private schools are not collapsed in Ghana but allowed to partner with government(s) to provide access and quality education to all Ghanaian children.”
