Mrs Samira Bawumia, the wife of the Ghana’s Vice-President, has finished her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme. The wife of the Vice President graduated last week in London. According to Mrs. Bawumia, “A few years ago, with support and encouragement from family and friends, I took advantage of the Distance (Online) Law Degree Programme offered by the University of London.” “Thankfully, I had the honour of graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree, last week, in spite of the numerous challenges COVID-19 presented.” She said. According to her, “It has been an incredible journey of learning while juggling work, family, and official duties.” “Let’s be inspired to pursue our dreams irrespective of the challenges we’re faced with,” Mrs. Bawumia.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum Ghana’s Minister for Education, has advised the Heads of schools that performed below 0-10 percent pass rate to put together intervention programmes in order to make students who pass through such schools find opportunities for further studies than becoming a liability to the society and their parents because of their inability to pass their examinations. Addressing the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and Principals of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institutions at a meeting in the Ashanti Regional Capital, Kumasi on Saturday, 11 March 2023. The Education Minister admonished CHASS and Principals of TVET institutions of such schools, to improve the standards of the schools or risk having them shut down. According to the Minister, closing down the schools, will save government from incurring huge losses with the existence of such schools. He explained that, the students who will be affected by the closure of such schools will be reallocated to schools nearby to enable them continue their education. The Minister also commended the heads of schools for their various roles in helping transform education in the country, while encouraging them to work hard to ensure the right results are achieved. He further cautioned the heads of schools against preventing first year students from beginning their studies due to their inability to procure all items on their prospectus. “There is no way any student should be turned away from school because the parents have not been able to procure some items on the school’s prospectus. “At least, let them come to the school and the rest could be procured with some time,” the Minister cautioned. The purpose of the meeting, which is held annually was to discuss the current state of the country’s educational system, new developments in the country’s educational system and the issues affecting them. And is a full fee pay. So you can understand that if 87 students paid their money in full that means that the people appreciate what we do here”. The New Head of Department of BTU Paid a Familiarization Visit to ….
The new Head of Department of the former Marketing Department and now Marketing and Media Communication Department, Ben Asunka on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, paid a familiarization visit to the lecturers and students of the Public Relations and Media Studies of the Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU), Bukere Campus. The purpose of his visit was to introduce himself as the new Head of Department (HOD) of the Marketing and Media Communication to the lecturers and students of PR and Media Studies at the Bolgatanga Technical University, Bukere campus and also to address their concerns. Mr. Asunka in his introductory speech with the students welcomed them to the school and the Department, and also being the first batch of the Diploma in PR and Media Studies. He assured them that he will make himself available to address their concerns and grievances when the need be. He used the opportunity to inform the students that a 4-year BSc in Marketing and Media Communication will be introduced next year by the Institution. ‘‘You could use your Diploma in PR and Media Studies to pursue that degree programme with the Level 300 students’’ he said. In an open forum with the students, Atanga Alex asked if arrangements would be made for them to sometimes join the continuing Level 100 students on campus or vice versa for the Matriculations and lectures. Mr. Asunka explained that they will join the freshers for the Matriculations scheduled for March 1, 2023, and sometimes converge on campus with the students pursuing the same courses to have lectures. ‘‘Students’ Identification cards shall be issued to you during your matriculation day. You know because your programme is much of the filed work or practical, you need them for easy identification outside’’, he said. Mr. Asunka Ben, in conclusion, informed the students that the Mid-Semester which was scheduled to take place on February 27, 2023, onwards has been postponed to the second week of March 2023 and reasons being that, it will make way for the newly admitted students of the new programme, get settled and to also enable students to get handouts from lecturers for the Mid-Semester examinations. Decentralized Controller and Accountant General in charge of biometric offices to every region in the north-aggrieved teachers lament Decentralization is one of the serious problems facing most of the public sector in the country. One would have asked what it will cost the government or even the institutions involved in this regrettable experience to decentralize the biometric office. It is still awkward that in this 21st century, teachers from all northern parts of Ghana will all travel from their various regions to Tamale just to go through comptroller Biometric process. Some of these teachers even had to travel one day ahead to enable them get a sleeping place to rent at either a guest house or hotel which comes with another stress and cost. As if that is not enough, teachers after passing through all this stress, also end up paying some amount before going through the biometric process. Some weeks ago, there was an attack on Tamale- Walewale road which was reported across the most credible platforms in the country. Some of the victims were teachers traveling to Tamale from Bolga to pass through their biometric process. Authorities responsible must do something urgent by way of decentralizing the controller biometric offices across the 5 northern regions to reduce pressure on innocent teachers. The education ministry should save the lives of its employees by engaging those responsible as far as the decentralization of controller biometric offices is concerned.
One student One Tablet to be activated—Dr. Bawumia promises
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed that Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country will soon be provided with electronic tablets for their smooth learning activity. The Vice President made the pronouncement during this year’s New Year’s School on Tuesday, 17 January 2023 at the University of Ghana, Legon. “This game-changing development” is geared at providing students with the relevant materials needed for their learning.He said, the initiative forms part of the Akufo-Addo-led government’s digitalisation agenda. According to him, the tablets will be uploaded with past questions and textbooks. “This year, we are on course to provide all Senior High School students in Ghana with tablets which are loaded with textbooks on them for their studies. “That’s a very game-changing development. We will have past questions preloaded on these tablets that will be distributed.”Plans are currently underway to make access to the internet free in both second-cycle and tertiary institutions to enhance teaching and learning”. Dr. Bawumia revealed that the contract for the first batch of Wi-Fi installations in some second cycle and tertiary institutions as part of the project has already begun. Adopt the ‘can do attitude’–Minister tell GES
The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu has urged Municipal and District Directors of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and teachers to adopt the “can do attitude” to improve the quality of education in the Region. He said even though the region had similar working conditions with other regions in the country, its examination results were poor as compared to sister-regions, and therefore, called on managers of the GES to eschew all forms of excuses and deliver on their mandate. The Minister made the call when he joined the Bolgatanga Municipal and Bolgatanga East Directorates of the GES to mark ‘My First Day at School.’ “Our region is not in isolation, the pay is the same, everything else is the same, we went to the same Training Colleges, and all have the same degrees. It therefore means there is something in this region we are not doing right which could account for the poor performance of students,” he said. Hon. Yakubu said the methodology adopted by some teachers could discourage some pupils from attending school, adding that the attitude of some teachers who engaged pupils on their farms should be stopped. He admonished parents and guardians to take up the responsibilities of their wards seriously as education was key to the future of their children, and the development of the nation. He cited instances where some children went to school on empty stomachs, some abandoned school to help their mothers to sell in markets, while some engaged in illegal mining activities for quick money. President Akufo-Addo intervenes, instruct Director General to initiate disciplinary action not dismissal Following the issuance of a dismissal letter by the Management of Ghana Education Service to the eight students of Chiana Senior High School in the Upper East Region who were seen in a viral video insulting the President of the Republic of Ghana. The general public condemned the students actions but however, considered the decision of the Management of GES to be too harsh. A lot calls coming from the families of these students and members of the general public calling on President to intervene has yielded good results. The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo in a release signed by Kwasi Kwaeteng, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, has finally intervened in the matter after his attention was drawn to it.
