UE NAGRAT Threatens Strike Action Over Govt Adamant on COLA
The Upper East Regional Chapter of the National Association Of Graduate Teachers(NAGRAT) led by it’s regional president Akunzebe John has threatened to embark on a strike action should the government fail to grant their request for twenty(20%)cost of living allowance(COLA) which they think will help mitigate the mass suffering of the Ghanaian worker. Mr. Akunzebe John who addressed the press at the regional secretariat of NAGRAT in Bolgatanga said, prices of fuel, goods and services continue to rise day by day and between January to now, fuel has increased by fifty percent(50%) and prices of basic food and other commodities have increased astronomically. The regional President further lamented that price of a bowl of groundnut which was seven cedis(7) was now thirteen cedis(13) and a bowl of beans which was nine cedis(9) has increased to twenty five cedis(25) and the price of lorry fare from Bolgatanga to Accra which used to be one hundred and fifty cedis(150) was now twenty hundred and twenty five cedis(225) and the teacher today lives on the providence of the Lord and not knowing how long this would continue. Mr.Akunzebe said, in the face of this challenges, the Labour unions requested for (COLA) from the government to mitigate this sufferings during this year’s MAY DAY celebrations which had the president and vice president of Ghana in attendance. He said having not heard from government despite the calls the union whose core mandate is to promote the welfare of its members it would not sit unconcerned and they had come to their wits end and demand from their national leadership that if by the end of June 2022 their call for COLA is not heeded to they lay down their tools as stated by members of NAGRAT in the Upper East region. And some of them, tell them they are giving them football clubs. So, I asked them, you didn’t go to join Ghana Black Stars and you’re coming to join Burkina Stars. So, they actually deceived them”. Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies graduates 13 students in its 4th graduation ceremony
Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies has graduated 4 PhDs, 3 MPhils and 6 BSc at its fourth graduation ceremony. The ceremony attracted personalities across board to witness the graduation ceremony. Speaking at the event, MITDS Council member who represented the council Chairman, Rev. Professor Saa Dittoh said, the institution’s major challenges are how to construct a dedicated Library Complex for our students and how to house our Administration in a permanent structure. In the light of all these, the Council joins MITDS in a passionate appeal to the Government of Ghana (The GETFund) and donors or philanthropists, to assist achieve this goal. According to the Council Chairman, all the infrastructure seen within the school premises was funded from internal sources since its inception in 2014 till date. Stressing that, the institution never had a single financial backing from the Government of Ghana. Prof. Dittoh and members of the council also commended MITDS for the research executed leading to the production of grass charcoal and grass brown paper which he thinks will solve pertinent special problems of Ghana, and perhaps Africa. However, he was confident that the 13 grandaunts of MITDS will continue to make the institution proud wherever they find themselves. Also serving as a representative on behalf of the UDS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gabriel A. Teye at the fourth graduation ceremony organized by the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies, Prof. Shamsu-Deen Ziblim Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance of UDS said, he is already amazed at the quality of teaching, Research, and Community service currently going on in MITDS and he strongly supports the call for Government to be visible in their endeavors. Heads of five Senior High Schools to face prosecution
Some heads of five Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Western Region have been referred to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) for prosecution. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), referred the heads of these schools to EOCO for procurement breaches. The schools include Adiembra SHS, Tarkwa SHS, Bozo Kaku, Methodist SHS and St. Augustine’s SHS, Bogoso. Also, a tutor at the Archbishop Porter Girls SHS has been referred to EOCO for the alleged unlawful taking of salaries. Speaking at its sitting on the Auditor General’s 2018 Report in Takoradi, Chairman of the PAC, James Klutse Averdzi noted that the prosecution of the heads of the five schools will serve as a deterrent to others. Mr. Averdzi said: “In the past, we have never referred officials or the individuals for prosecution so it looks like they are taking advantage of that, that it has become an annual ritual, we will only come, the chairman will caution and that will be the end. “So we decided that now if you go against the law we will recommend you for prosecution. So you go to court and defend yourself. How do you expect workers to survive when the price of everything has doubled—NAGRAT Boss
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has requested the Tripartite Committee negotiating for a national minimum wage to come out with a wage fixed at the existing inflation rate. Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Joy FM, The National President of NAGRAT, Mr. Angel Carbonu, said everywhere in the world, minimum wages are pegged to inflation rates. “How do you expect workers to survive when the price of everything has doubled in the last couple of months?” he questioned. According to Mr. Carbonu, even the cost of government services has skyrocketed. “So, how are workers expected to survive in the wake of these increments and rising inflation leading to price hikes?” Mr. Carbonu said NAGRAT is demanding a 19 percent increase in the yet-to-be-announced minimum wage to address workers’ challenges during these times. Gov’t swiftly releases GHS 67m to Colleges Of Education for trainees’ feeding
The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has disclosed that government has released over GHS67 million to public Colleges of Education across the country to cater for trainees food supply. Apexnewsgh.com report The step was taking immediately after the Principals of the various Colleges of Education announced that students would be fed twice instead of the three square meals a day due to the delay in the payment of six-month feeding arrears by the government. Meanwhile, the Principals had also pointed that trainees were going to start feeding themselves from May 8, 2022, if the government failed to release funds for feeding. Confirming the release of fund, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum said, the government through the Finance Ministry has acted swiftly by releasing GHC67,942,662 to principals of the various Public Colleges of Education to salvage the situation. Asking whether he regrets being a teacher? Mr. Ajene said: “I was concerned about my teaching and I produced so many nationalists. Late Aliu Mahama was my student, Edward Mahama and even the former President of the National House of Chief was my student. I produced so many Medical Doctors, if went to medical school, i should have been the only doctor. But I produced so many doctors, I produced so many statesmen, and I have touched the human resource elements of most Ghanaians anywhere in the country. So, why should I regret as a teacher”. Mr. Ajene asked “Today, when they enter into teaching, is just like going to a farm and say, if you have planted ten acres of maize, one acre will get you ten bags and you buy hundred empty bags waiting. That is not the type of teaching we want. They have just started and they haven’t seen anything, they should be patient enough. A teacher today wants a car and they compare themselves to others, don’t compare because someone’s problem would have liked to be a teacher. I have never and will never regret being a teacher”. He stressed “I am not a politician but I have touched the human development of this country more than most politicians, so what is my regret?. These politicians respect me. If I entered Ghanaian Parliament 20, 30 percent or maybe more than that will rise and say this is our teacher and I have been very significantly proud that am a teacher”. However, in 2021, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament Education Select Committee, Clement Apaak in a separate release said 44,000 teachers out of the 284,000 public basic school teachers left teaching profession in 2021.
