Zorkor SHS students stand and eat in the sun and rain
It was mealtime at the Zorkor Senior High School in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region when The Fourth Estate visited. But only a handful of the students were present for breakfast. The school has a population of about 1,200, but a majority were on the mid-term’s break. It is often said that the fewer, the merrier; but in the case of these students, mealtime cannot be associated with merrymaking. It is the most dreaded part of their lives as students. They have no roof over their heads, so they dine in the sun. And in the rain, when it is not very severe. It was only nine o’clock, but the blistering northern Ghana sun had served enough warning that it would be worse when they returned for lunch later in the afternoon. Off the record, the students shared their daily misery and frustration when they had to take their meals in the open. They had not been permitted by the school authorities to grant an interview so they would not speak on the record. “I wish you had come here on a rainy day,” one of the students told The Fourth Estate. When it rains, they have to go through the rain to take their meals. But when the rainfall is severe, they stay away. The students say when there is heavy rain, they stay away. The students take their meals on the concrete foundation of the abandoned dining hall project. Below the raised concrete surface where the students are taking porridge with bread, a donkey is grazing. It is tied closely to the dining area so that it does not feed on the crops nearby. There are only a handful of dining tables, some with visible deterioration from the vagaries of the weather. The tables are not enough so instead of ten students to a table, thirty students use one table at mealtime. There are no chairs. Once they are served, some stand and eat, while others look for the nearest shade. It is a situation that raises concerns in the Covid-19 pandemic, but they appear more concerned about the epidemic of deprivation. They have many problems, but their main concern is the fact that they cannot eat in a decent environment. That has been the plight of these students since their temporary dining hall structure collapsed on June 10, 2021. Zorkor SHS was established by the chiefs and people of Zorkor in 2009 when the Computerised School Selection and Placement System did not place some students from the community. The school was later adopted by the government, but it still remained an orphan, in many respects, as far as some critical infrastructure is concerned. In 2016, the government awarded a contract for the construction of a dining hall for the school. That contract has been abandoned at the foundation level. The project halted because the contractor had not been paid. The chief of Zorkor Kodrogo and member of the school’s governing board, Naba Adindaa Awamyelum II, said the school had always lacked a number of amenities. The students used to eat in the open because the small baobab tree close to the kitchen had insects and other pathogens falling into their food whenever they ate under it, he said. He was, therefore, happy when the assembly awarded the contract for the construction of a temporary structure after many appeals from the school and traditional authorities. Naba Adindaa Awamyelum II said he took an interest in the project, but at a point, the contractor could not complete the work. The assembly did not pay all the money needed to do the work. The chief of Zorkor Kodrogo and member of the school’s governing board, Naba Adindaa Awamyelum II, said the school had always lacked a number of amenities. In 2018, the Bongo District Assembly awarded a contract for the construction of a temporary dining hall structure but that structure has collapsed, leaving the students with no option, but the open space. The contractor said the District Assembly should be held responsible for the collapse of the structure. The supervising engineer of the project, Ayuba Issakah Aguba, told The Fourth Estate that the initial contract, worth about GHc70,000, was for the construction of a 12 by 25 metres structure. The school authorities protested that it was too small and could not contain even half of the students. The size was subsequently increased to 15 by 50 metres, according to Mr Aguba, the contractor’s engineer. Mr Aguba said the contractor required at least GHc230,000 to build a structure that could be strong enough to accommodate the students. According to him, the Bongo District Assembly said it could not afford to pay that amount so the assembly brought its own drawings and specifications. Mr. Aguba said his estimates with the assembly’s drawings showed that the least amount needed for the project was GHc160,000. Again, the assembly said it could not afford GHc160,000. The district assembly, according to Mr. Aguba, said it could only commit 90,000 for the project. Even with that, the assembly ended up paying only GHc70,000 cedis. Mr. Aguba said the weight of the structure required bigger concrete pillars if it was to stand the test of time. He was not surprised that the structure had collapsed, saying he had warned the assembly about it. The collapsed temporary structure Assembly’s response The Bongo District Assembly has denied responsibility for the collapse of the temporary dining hall. “To say that we made the contractor do shoddy work is casting a slur on our integrity,” the Bongo District Chief Executive, Peter Awimbisa Ayamga, told The Fourth Estate. He admitted the cost of the project was revised upwards when the initial estimate of GHc130,000 proved not enough. He could, however, not remember the exact cost the assembly agreed with the contractor. “If you have done work which is not of good quality, or [if] the wind was too strong and pulled it down, why do you blame the assembly?” he asked. Most importantly, it is in the book of Revelation that we are told of the one thousand years reign of Christ on Earth. According to the scripture quoted above, the devil shall be locked up first, and then Christ will establish a righteous Government on Earth, which will last for 1000 years. After it, the devil shall be released again. This means that this Millennial reign of Christ would be a special one. There would be righteousness on Earth because the devil who causes evil on Earth must have been removed. Now, it must also be reiterated that the belief in the 1000 years or Millenium is widespread. Even non-Christians have their own versions of the concept. The Muslims teach that when the Antichrist, who they call Dajal, appears, Jesus will join Prophet Mohammed to defeat him. After it, they will establish an Islamic rule on Earth. Adolf Hitler, using his occult understanding of World history, taught his fellow Nazists, and also proclaimed to the world, that his Government (Third Reich) would last for 1000 years. The truth is that there is a universal reason for the concept of Millenium. This material world runs on a timetable. After the expiry of Earth’s life span, there is a bonus time of 1000 years within which to merge Humanity with other created beings in the Universe. Within the millennium, Humans shall know and meet so-called Aliens, Angels, Humans in other Dimensions; and then they are expected to eventually meet The Almighty God. However, because of the War of Angels, this scenario wouldn’t have been possible. The three warring Angelic Kingdoms had been plotting to exclude others during the Millennium. Jesus (from Yahweh Kingdom) planned to establish an exclusive Yahweh Government. Mohammed (from Anunnaki Kingdom) planned to Islamize the entire Earth during the Millennium. The Angel War is over, and all the Dimensions have received Supremicity, the energy of God, and have become Almighty. New Delta variant of COVID-19 hits 85 schools in Ashanti Region
The new Delta variant of COVID-19 is sweeping through schools in the Ashanti Region as Ghanaians let down their guards, according to health officials. Addressing the media on Monday 26 July 2021, the Ghana Health Service regional head Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang disclosed that at least 356 new cases have been recorded in 85 schools in the Ashanti Region. He said the development is as a result of blatant disregard for safety protocols on campus. He said a total of 1,135 active cases have been recorded in the region. Dr Tenkorang also warned that treatment centers will be overwhelmed if safety protocols are not enforced. Third wave Ghana appears to be undergoing an “alarming” third wave of coronavirus infections as a result of the highly transmissible Delta variant, President Akufo-Addo said on Sunday. “It appears that that, unfortunately, our nation is experiencing a third wave of COVID-19 infections”, Mr Akufo-Addo said while delivering his 26th address to the nation. The President said, the increase in infection rates in recent weeks, has led to a rise in hospitalisation and ICU bed uptakes, and in worst cases, deaths. He noted that the entire development is very alarming, especially as, “we are being told by officials of the Ghana Health Service, that the recovery rate is on the decline.” Data published by the Ghana Health Service suggest that as of July 23, the number of active cases stand at 4,521. The total case count is 101,170 with some 96,759 discharges/recoveries. “Our daily infection rate for the past week is three hundred and fifty (350) cases, and, sadly, forty (40) more people have died from COVID over the last ten (10) weeks, bringing the cumulative number of deaths to eight hundred and twenty-three (823) since the onset of the pandemic,” the President stressed. ADDRESS TO THE NATION BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFO-ADDO, ON UPDATES TO GHANA’S ENHANCED RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, ON SUNDAY, 25TH JULY 2021. Fellow Ghanaians, good evening. I have not come into your homes for some time, because I had hoped that the next time I did so, I would come to announce that we were ready to lift the restrictions and protocols, and get our lives and economy back to normal. Alas, that is not the case, so it has become necessary for me to come to your homes this evening, after a ten (10) week absence, to provide you with an update on our nation’s COVID-19 situation. As per data available from the Ghana Health Service, it appears that, unfortunately, our nation is experiencing a third wave of COVID-19 infections. These increased infections have largely been driven by the Delta Variant of the virus, which, according to the World Health Organisation, has increased transmissibility rates, and, in our case in Ghana, has led, in recent weeks, to a rise in hospitalisation and ICU bed uptakes, and, tragically, deaths. Indeed, in Update No.25, the last update I rendered, our total active case count stood at one thousand, three hundred and fourteen (1,314), with our daily infection rate standing at one hundred (100). One million, one hundred and twenty-one thousand, one hundred and sixty-eight (1,121,168) COVID tests had been conducted, out of which ninety-two thousand, four hundred and sixty (92,460) persons had been infected, ninety-one thousand, one hundred and forty-six (91,146) persons had recovered, with a total of seven hundred and eighty-three (783) deaths. As at Wednesday, 21st July 2021, ten (10) weeks later, the Ghana Health Services is now reporting that our total number of active cases stands at four thousand and ninety-four (4,094). A total of one million, three hundred and ninety-four thousand, five hundred and forty (1,394,540) tests have been conducted, out of which one hundred and one thousand, one hundred and seventy (101,170) persons have been infected with the virus, and ninety-six thousand, two hundred and fifty-five (96,255) persons have recovered. Our daily infection rate is ……… and, sadly, thirty-six (36) more people have died from COVID over the last ten (10) weeks, bringing the cumulative number of deaths to eight hundred and nineteen (819) since the onset of the pandemic. Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan areas remain the hotspots of infections. This entire development is very alarming, especially as we are being told by officials of the Ghana Health Service, that the recovery rate is on the decline. Fellow Ghanaians, it is obvious from the data that we have let our guard down, with many going about their daily duties in clear breach and disregard for the protocols. At a time when the economy is on the rebound, and business activities picking up, we must do everything possible to contain this outbreak. We cannot afford to return to the days of partial lockdowns, which brought considerable hardships and difficulties for all of us. You returned me to office in the elections of 7th December with a clear and decisive mandate to protect lives and livelihoods, and steer our nation out the grips of the pandemic, and onto a path of sustained economic growth and progress. Fortunately for us, we have tried and tested response protocols which we have implemented since March 2020. They have stood us in good stead, and we have no choice but to return to the strict implementation of some of them. It is extremely troubling to note that the high compliance rate with mask wearing has fallen alarmingly. The wearing of masks in public places, fellow Ghanaians, continues to be mandatory. There are no exceptions to this rule, and strict conformity with this protocol will be enforced. Anyone found to be flouting this directive will have him or herself to blame. We cannot afford to allow the recklessness of a few to endanger the lives of the majority of persons in the country. The COVID-19 Taskforce, which I chair, has recommended that a second look be taken at the protocols that have been put in place for the holding of funerals across the country. I have, in previous updates, emphasised the need for the strict observance of safety protocols at funerals, and the following measures are a set of enhanced protocols which must be adhered to by all at funerals: all events associated with funerals must be held in open air spaces; there must be observance of the one (1) metre social distancing rule by sympathisers; the wearing of masks is mandatory, and persons must respect the enhanced hygiene protocols; funerals should not go beyond the two (2) hour time duration; post-funeral receptions are banned; handshakes must be avoided; and one-week funeral celebrations are restricted solely to family members, and should not exceed a duration of two (2) hours. With workplaces currently witnessing a resurgence in COVID-19 infections, I want to admonish businesses, workplaces and their owners and management to observe staff management and workplace protocols, such as the use of a shift system and technology, with the view to achieving social distancing and hygiene protocols. The Ghana Health Service has moved to fortify its contact tracing, testing and treating campaigns, especially across the hotspots of Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan areas. COVID-19 treatment centres continue to be resourced with medical supplies, personal protection equipment, and health workers. We will continue to ensure that all arriving passengers at the Kotoka International Airport are in possession of a negative PCR test result upon their arrival in Ghana, a test which should have been conducted not more than seventy-two (72) hours before the scheduled departure from the country of origin. In addition, all passengers will continue to be subjected to a mandatory COVID test on arrival. North East Region: 97% of students who wrote WASCCE in 2020 failed – Minister
One Hundred and Seventeen (117), out of about Five-Thousand (5000) students who sat for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) passed. The rest of the students failed, the North East Regional Minister, Zakaria Yidana, has disclosed. This, according to him, means that only 3% of the students passed while 97% failed, a development he observed as worrying. “We had about 5000 students and when the results came, only 117 students passed the WASSCCE exams, that represents 3% out of 5000 students. You ask yourself, what happened to the over 4,800 students. 97% failed. We cannot do that in this region and think that we have a future”, he said. Mr Yidana revealed this development at a handing-over ceremony of a 12-unit classroom block and a 400- bed capacity girl’s dormitory for the Walewale Vocational and Technical Institute to reduce overcrowding in the school. The North East Region has 11 Senior High, Vocational and Technical Schools in the Six Municipalities and Districts of the region. The Minister said the students need to up their game to make the most out of the opportunity they have. He charged them to do their best. “I’m challenging you, you’re more than intelligent and your teachers are more than capable of making you succeed but much of it depends on you the students”, he said. According to the North East Regional Education Directorate, the abysmal performance in last year’s WASSCE is a result of challenges confronting the education sector in the region. Some of the challenges the directorate mentioned included lack of infrastructure, lack of teaching and learning materials, lack of teachers accommodation, lack of furniture and other challenges. One of the challenges the Municipal and District Assemblies in the region are facing is the numerous uncompleted infrastructure in the Senior High and Technical Schools which they say their Internal Generated Funds and MP’s Common Fund cannot provide all these infrastructures. To help solve overcrowding and infrastructure deficit in the schools, Ghana Education Trust Fund and the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly constructed the 12-unit classroom block and a 400-bed capacity girl’s dormitory for the Walewale Vocational and technical institute. The current student population at the technical institute stands at 1,246 comprising 842 males and 404 females. The North East Regional minister Zakaria Yidana, charged students in the region to put more effort into their studies irrespective of the challenges in the various second cycle institutions. The principal of the institute, John Abdul Razak Salifu appealed for more support to the school including a dining hall, boys’ dormitory, fence wall and workshops. The Municipal Chief Executive of West Mamprusi Arimiyaw Somo Lucky assured the institute and the other three second cycle institutions in the municipality of the government’s support and has urged students to take care of the projects for others benefit. UTAG threatens strike over ‘unfruitful’ negotiation of conditions of service
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is insisting that its members will embark on strike beginning August 2 if issues concerning their conditions of service are not addressed by the end of July 2021. President of the Association, Prof. Charles Marfo said the decision is a result of the government’s failure to properly resolve their concerns regarding their conditions of service over a period of time. Prof. Marfo in a Citi News interview in Kumasi said: “Over the years, the fortunes of university lecturers have dwindled. For the past three years, we have been engaging government on our conditions of service.” “So we have indicated to the government that if by the end of July 2021, we do not see anything concrete to better the lives of university lecturers, we have only one weapon and that is strike. If our concerns delay, the strike will continue if it’s declared on August 2, 2021”, he added. Meanwhile, some students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have urged the government to as a matter of urgency address the grievances of their lecturers to avoid a possible strike. Slow salary negotiations Last month, UTAG, lamented what it calls the slow nature of ongoing negotiations on the salaries and conditions of service of its members. The Association maintains that there is growing tension among its members on the various campuses due to the posture of the government towards finalizing negotiations on their conditions of service, which have been on the table since 2018. It, therefore, gave the government until the end of July to address their concerns. “We have been negotiating with the government about our conditions of service, but it’s been long since we had one. So we thought it wise that it is about time we did. We have been having negotiations on it, but it doesn’t seem to have been fruitful, so we want to begin to get something substantial for our members. We expect the government to be up and doing. VIRAL VIDEO: Humanoid Unveiled in Japan? It’s Actually a Video Game Promo
The video is from an adventure game ‘Detroit: Become Human,’ which was released in 2018 CLAIM A video of a human robot being interviewed by a journalist is going viral on social media with a claim that the robot was “unveiled in Japan a few days ago.” The robot, which identifies itself as Chloe, talks to the interviewer about its abilities, giving credit to the humans who have developed it. It speaks about passing the turning test which is a way to determine if a computer counts as “intelligence.” The video has been shared with the caption, “Perhaps you won’t believe it.. this woman is a robot that was unveiled by Japan a few days ago. The video is from an adventure game ‘Detroit: Become Human,’ which has been developed by Quantic Dream, and was released in 2018. The viral video is a part of an interview, which was released by the makers to introduce people to the key moments in the universe and set the stage for the story of the game. WHAT WE FOUND OUT On fragmenting the video into several keyframes and then conducting a reverse image search, we came across a tweet by an adventure game ‘Detroit: Become Human,’ which introduced Chloe’s character. The tweet dated back to May 2018. The Twitter handle shared a picture of the same robot seen in the video with the caption: “Meet Chloe, the very first personal assistant android built by Cyberlife. GHS34.8m on 446.9K spent on WASSCE ‘pasco’ for 2021 candidates
“Mr Speaker, in 2020, the government, through its efforts to help students amidst COV1D-19 to prepare for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), procured 568,755 past questions for students to try their hands on before sitting for the actual exams.” This was according to the Education Minister At a unit price of GHS78, the government of Ghana has said it spent GHS34.8 million to buy past questions (pasco) for candidates of the 2021 WASSCE under the Free SHS programme. On the floor of parliament on Wednesday, 14 July 2021, Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum, said the current unit price is 32% more than that of 2020 – GHS59.
