An Educationist, Mr Ekow Djan has said former Minister of Education Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh should be held liable for the controversial textbooks disparaging Ewes in the country. According to Mr Djan, the Ministry of Education under the watch of Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, together with its direct agency, the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) headed by then Executive Secretary, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah failed to ensure that textbooks accompanied the newly rolled out curriculum. This, he believed resulted in the use of unapproved textbooks by some teachers. “The Standard Based Curriculum being used in Basic schools were effectively implemented in September, 2019. “One would have thought that, Managers of Ghana’s Education machinery would provide requisite textbooks for pupils and teachers to cushion the smooth running of the new curriculum but unfortunately, government is yet to provide a single textbook,” he said in a statement. He added “It is therefore not surprising to note that Publishers have taken advantage of the porous system to publish inferior textbooks with derogatory and false contents. “Apparently, the Ministry of Education under the watch of Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, together with its direct agency, the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) headed by then Executive Secretary, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah failed woefully to ensure that textbooks accompanied the newly rolled out curriculum. “The content of the Standard Based Curriculum is as problematic as the content of the inferior textbooks being criticized now. The Ghanaian people should take the pain to scrutinize the entire curriculum. There would be more distasteful revelations other than what we’re criticizing now. If we could remember, Comprehensive Sexual Education which sparked a nationwide agitation is still featured in the Upper Primary English Curriculum. “Again, the Ghanaian history has been distorted while our kids are being made to learn the culture and practices of other countries than ours. “I urge parents, Civil Society Groups and patriotic Ghanaians to join the call for the immediate withdrawal of the entire curriculum. Grammatical errors in your apology letter make you unfit to be publishers – Ablakwa to Badu Nkansah
North Tongu Lawmaker Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has rejected the apology letter written by publishers of the controversial history textbook Badu Nkansah. Mr Ablakwa who is also a former Deputy Minister of Education said the apology letter is “an apology of apology” because “they are not taking responsibility.” Asking for forgiveness for the controversial textbook, Badu Nkansah explained in a press statement on Monday March 15 that “They, however, told us to work on certain aspects of the book further in order for it to meet the expectations of the new curriculum.” “We have seen certain snapshots on social media which has generated public uproar due to its offensive tone. Though it is not a deliberate attempt to berate such a huge section of our society, we wish to unreservedly apologize for the slip,” the statement added. But speaking in an interview with TV3’s Dela Mishel on the Mid Day news on Monday, Mr Ablakwa said “It is clear that these publications have caused public uproar and outrage and as a Member of Parliament from the region, I thought it wise to file an urgent question requesting the minister responsible for education to come and respond to questions as to how these books found their way into our schools. “There is an agency called National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NACAA) which is the gatekeeper and must ensure that before books are placed in the hands of our innocent children those books meet standards, that those books are authorised so that our children are not miseducated and are not polluted. “All of those things appeared to have been violated. The Children have been left at the mercy of people who are only interested in profiteering. “I have seen the apology from Badu Nkansah publications and honestly, it is an apology of an apology. They are not taking responsibility. ‘Efo juju’ textbooks: Volta House of Chiefs condemns publishers
The Volta Regional House of Chiefs has condemned the publishers of History of Ghana Textbook 3 and Golden English Basic 4 book for publishing contents that make “derogatory allusions and innuendos at Ewes.” While History of Ghana Textbook 3 by Badu Nkansah Publications features a song that purported portrays the Ewe identity, Golden English Basic 4 by Golden Publications wrote a sentence which said: ‘Efo agrees to prepare the juju for the players’ on page 17. In a statement issued by the Regional House of Chiefs and signed by its President, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV on Monday, 15 March 2021, the Volta chiefs noted that their attention has been drawn to the contents of a “book designed for use by lower classes in the current educational structure.” The house described some of the content of the books which it refers to casting “derogatory allusions and innuendos at Ewes,” as “distasteful and a disgrace to the authors and publishers of the said material intended to educate the younger generation of this country.” The Regional House of Chiefs said: “We deem it highly reprehensible for those responsible for this offensive publication, to harbour such vile thoughts about their fellow citizens of Ghana in the twenty-first century.” “We therefore unreservedly condemn this singular demonstration of tribal bigotry and prejudice and call on those responsible for the offensive publication, to withdraw the same from circulation and to destroy every part of the offending material. The house further demanded “an unqualified apology from the authors and publishers of this base material to be rendered to all Ewe speaking citizens of Ghana” It urged other “ethnic groups in this country, to condemn such divisive publications which only serve as a recipe for chaos and disunity.” The house added that: “In the event that this ill-advised publication is discovered anywhere after our demand for the same to be withdrawn from circulation, we hereby serve notice that the Chiefs and people of Ewe ethnic origin, will take appropriate legal measures to ensure that these mischief-makers walk on the right side of the law.” Meanwhile, Ghanaian-owned publishing company, Badu Nkansah Publications, has apologised to Ghanaians for the circulation of their History of Ghana Textbook 3, which features condescending content of Ewes. In a statement by the publishing company, Badu Nkansah Publications said: “Following the introduction of the new curriculum by NaCCA, we submitted a textbook application for approval for our book History of Ghana in January last year. We received a response to our application from NaCCA on 25th September (Reference NaCCA /G14).” It continued that: “The NaCCA raised concerns with portions of the book even though they informed us that the book had satisfied most of the technical and content requirements. Adeti writes: A lesson to parents – How a child got frozen alive
This thing has been seriously troubling my mind. Kindly pay attention to it. I will be brief. Whilst some children were playing together on a family compound, one among them, a little girl, feeling thirst, took leave of the playground and walked into the house. She made for a chest freezer (what is commonly called deep freezer) to pull out a bottle of water. Unable to reach for any of the bottles inside the half-stocked freezer, she held the top lid of the freezer upwards with one hand and strenuously helped herself to the edge of the freezer to her abdomen level. As she leaned her abdomen on the edge (still holding the top lid upwards) and stretched the other free hand hard towards a bottle in the freezer, she lost hold of the lid and tumbled into the deep freezer. The top lid also dropped shut with the little girl locked inside the freezing white box. Later, the play outside was over and her elder siblings began to look for her. Their mother returned from the adjoining house (where she apparently had been engaged in a discussion with a neighbour friend whilst her children were playing on their own) only to join the desperate search for her daughter. Hours later, the father returned from work, fatigued. He was welcomed with the unpleasant news— as he was undoing his neck tie— that one of the little members of the family was missing. He asked questions. The answers he got had no iota of clue. All that while, they least suspected she was in the deep freezer. Fatigued and confused in addition, the father needed water to drink before he would drive to the police to lodge a report. He walked briskly to the chest freezer and lifted the lid. The sight came like a flaming spear through his heart. Tragedy. A scream of horror went through the roof of the house. Such was the scream of horror that the birds on the roof, sensing terror, took to flight unprepared for cover. The girl was already frozen…dead. The ice did not give her a chance to close her eyes. She must have cried so loud in vain for help and must have struggled so hard in that lonely and dark place to push open the lid from inside to no avail before she died. Let us pay attention to this. And if there is no child around you for the moment, kindly inform your families and friends outside your home about this if there are children in their care and there is a chest freezer around. Children also have a midnight habit of just walking out of bed in the middle of their sleep when their parents or guardians are fast asleep to grab soft drinks, fruits, water, yoghurts and the like from deep freezers. I shared this true story about the girl frozen alive some time ago on the radio. Let us pay attention to this in the best way we can so we don’t wake up one day to any horror in our deep freezers. Deep freezers are very important to our domestic life but we need to keep them under lock and key as one of the ways to control their domestic use to avoid misfortune especially where there are little children.
