GSA to retain NABCO trainees to support nationwide enforcement exercise

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has taken steps to retain trainees assigned to the organisation under the Nation Builders Corp (NABCO) as it gears up to embark on a massive nationwide standards enforcement drive. The 189 NABCO graduates will support the exercise which seeks to ensure full compliance with the country’s regulations on standards to protect consumers while promoting fair trade practices. Absorbing the trainees will boost the staff strength of GSA to also meet the anticipated increase in demand for their services, following the implementation of borderless trading under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Director General of GSA, Prof. Alex Dodoo said the authority will leverage on experiences gathered by the trainees to boost its operations while fulfilling government’s pledge of creating jobs. “As we begin the rigorous enforcement of the standards, we certainly will need more hands to widen our coverage. So, there is the need for beefing up our capacity and also creating jobs as President Akufo-Addo envisions,” Prof Dodoo said. Pandemic derailed ‘year of enforcement’ The weak standards enforcement regime in the past allowed the dumping of substandard goods and services on the local market, thereby putting consumers and properties at risk. Plans to roll out the ‘year of enforcement’ measures in both 2020 and 2021 were disrupted following the pandemic-induced restrictions to curtail the spread of COVID-19. “We are gradually returning to normalcy and we need to step up our efforts to protecting consumers as well as importers and manufacturers of quality goods. It is the only way we can boost consumer confidence and prevent the influx of substandard goods on the local market,” the Director-General said.  GSA partners with police to enforce standards To help enforce standards and prosecute importers of counterfeit goods, the Ghana Standards Authority has partnered with Ghana Police Service to assist with the exercise. The collaboration was an outcome of a meeting between the GSA and the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare in Accra. President of Nabco Trainees Association Ghana Opoku Dennis Katakyie has admonished Nabco Trainees to disregard what he described as a “noise maker” who doesn’t have the youth at heart. After the President’s pronouncement of making NABCO beneficiaries permanent by the end of October 2021, the Executive Director of Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), Peter Bismark Kwofie, came out with a press statement saying the government’s decision to give Nation Builders Corp beneficiaries permanent employment is an unwise financial decision. According to Mr. Bismark Kwofie, he sees no Justifiable reason to maintain the Nation Builders Corp beneficiaries since it defeats the purpose of establishing the scheme. However, he thinks giving NABCO beneficiaries permanent employment is a waste of public funds and political tools to win votes. Meanwhile, his views have not gone well with beneficiaries as they described him as a ‘NOISE MAKER’ who doesn’t have any youth (NABCO TRAINEES) at heart. President Akufo-Addo has said, his government want to do another programme as soon as beneficiaries of Nation Builder Corps (NABCO) are made permanent by the end of October 2021. However, information reaching Apexnewgh.com has it that qualified NABCO beneficiaries across the country numbering 72,900 in various modules, will be given permanent a employment in the public sector by the end of October 2021.Apexnewsgh reports President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made the revelation during an interview with Anthony Good Junior of Radio Bar, in Sunyani monitored by Apexnewsgh.com. According to the President, 72,900 out of over 90, 000 applicants have responded so far and these cut across all the various modules. Per President pronouncement during the radio interview, 25,000 NABCO beneficiaries will be maintained in Education Service, 16,000 beneficiaries will be maintained in Revenue Ghana, 13,000 beneficiaries will be maintained in Civil Ghana, 7,000 beneficiaries will be maintained in Digital Ghana, 5, 000 will be maintained Enterprise Ghana, 3,500 will be maintained in Feed Ghana and 2, 900 will be maintained in Heal Ghana by the end of October.
