Former President John Mahama has assured Ghanaians that he will not cancel the Free Senior High School (SHS) program initiated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. Speaking at a community engagement event in the Bolgatanga East District in the Upper East Region, Mr. Mahama stated that he plans to improve the program if elected in the 2024 elections. Addressing rumors that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would abolish the Free SHS program, Mr. Mahama clarified that his aim is to enhance the program for the benefit of all students. He acknowledged the current state of the program and stressed the importance of making improvements to ensure its success. “I am not going cancel FSHS. Am going to improve it so that we can get the full benefit of FSHS. We will work hard to abolish the double track, so that our children will all go to school at the same time and vacate at the same time”. “We will go back to a three-term system that is what we have been used to and that is what we are going back to. Right now, you can tell what kind of system they are running, the whole educational system is basaaaaaa” Meanwhile, one of the key changes proposed by Mr. Mahama is the decentralization of the school feeding program. Under his vision, school heads will have the authority to engage local food suppliers from their respective districts. This localized approach will not only improve the quality of meals but also contribute to the growth of local economies. Mr. Mahama emphasized that this announcement aligns with his broader agenda for educational reform. He intends to focus on addressing the challenges within the Free SHS program and implementing measures that will enhance its effectiveness. With this commitment, Mr. Mahama aims to reassure Ghanaians that his presidency would not undermine the progress made in the education sector but rather build upon it. Former President John Dramani Mahama Pledges Regional Security Service Recruitment Center
Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his intention to implement regional security service recruitment center if he were to regain power as President. This announcement was made during his Building Ghana Tour in the Upper East Region, specifically at the Bolgatanga East Constituency on Friday, February 2. During his speech, Mr. Mahama highlighted that the recruitment process for the police, military, immigration, and prisons would be conducted regionally to provide equal opportunities for Ghanaian youth across the country. According to the former President, instead of the centralized recruitment system currently in place, individuals would have the chance to apply and be assessed within their respective regions. Furthermore, these recruitment drives would be openly advertised to attract a wider pool of applicants. In criticizing the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Mahama claimed that they had been engaging in non-transparent recruitment practices over the past three years. Mr. Mahama claimed that the NPP overlooked the advertising process and instead favored individuals based on connections and protocols. He emphasized the need for a change in this approach, promising to establish a fair and open system for recruitment into the security services if elected on December 7th. Under his proposed plan, Mr. Mahama aims to provide opportunities for all Ghanaians, allowing them and their children the chance to serve in the security services if they so desire. By decentralizing the recruitment process and ensuring transparency, the former president seeks to create a level playing field for all candidates. Bolga Airport: John Mahama Promises To Get Airport For The Region
Former President John Dramani Mahama has made a firm commitment to establish an airport in the Upper East Region of Ghana. During his Building Ghana Tour in the Bolgatanga East Constituency on February 2nd, Mahama addressed the audience and expressed his determination to follow through on this promise. He recounted the previous efforts made during his presidency, including acquiring a piece of land and inspecting it in preparation for the airport’s construction. I have heard some moves to activate it using a private company because they also need it their operations and if NDC come to power, is something we will continue and make sure Upper East Region gets a good airport. So that we can fly directly from anywhere. Unfortunately, due to changes in government, the project did not come to fruition. However, Mahama disclosed that he recently learned of new developments to activate the airport plans in collaboration with a private company. Recognizing the importance of a functional airport for both the region and the company’s operations, he assured the audience that if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were to win the upcoming elections, they would prioritize the establishment of a high-quality airport in the Upper East Region. “I have heard some moves to activate it using a private company because they also need it their operations and if NDC come to power, is something we will continue and make sure Upper East Region gets a good airport. So that we can fly directly from anywhere”. Mahama emphasized the convenience and direct connectivity it would bring for travelers from any location. Notably, the Bolgatanga Regional airport has encountered setbacks and delays for over three decades. Mr. Mahama promise came after the paramount chief of the Sakoti Traditional Area Naba Sigri Bewong posed a very interesting question to the former president during his building tour engagement with the Regional House of Chiefs. Former President John Dramani Mahama Unveils Plan for Mechanized Farming Service Centers across Districts
Former President John Dramani Mahama has outlined his plan to establish mechanized farming service centers in every district of Ghana if elected as President on December 7th. During his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Bolgatanga East Constituency of the Upper East Region, he addressed party supporters and emphasized the importance of providing farmers with state-of-the-art agricultural machinery. Under Mahama’s proposal, each district will be equipped with 15 tractors and a comprehensive range of mechanization equipment, including harrows, sprayers, and combine harvesters. These farming service centers would serve as hubs where farmers can access the equipment, they need to enhance productivity and efficiency in their operations. “We will provide mechanized farming services centers to farmers. So, every district will have a farming service center. We will put 15 tractors in every district, they will have everything you need for mechanization. They will harrow, sprayers, combine harvesters whatsoever you need for mechanization the center will have”. He said To be eligible for these services, Mr Mahama emphasized the need for farmers to form cooperatives and become members of the farming service center in their district. By doing so, farmers would receive regular inspections and have access to mechanization services during the farming season. Payment for these services would be deferred until after the crops are harvested and sold, ensuring that farmers have the means to cover the costs. However, Mahama also highlighted the importance of fulfilling payment obligations promptly. Farmers who fail to pay their dues within the specified timeframe would risk exclusion from the program in subsequent farming seasons. “You don’t need to pay immediately, you plant when you harvest sell your crops and come pay and if you don’t pay, the next season, you can count yourself out” He maintained. With this farming service center initiative, Mahama aims to revolutionize agriculture across the country by equipping farmers with modern machinery and ensuring their access to mechanization services. By doing so, he hopes to boost agricultural productivity, improve livelihoods, and further develop the agricultural sector in Ghana. When they bring the material things and stuff, take them and vote against them–John Mahama to Ghanaians
Former President John Mahama has called on Ghanaians to accept any monetary influence offered by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming national election but still vote against them. He made this plea while addressing the chiefs and people of Frankadua in the Asuogyaman Constituency of the Eastern Region. Mr. Mahama urged the electorate to follow the example set by voters in the recent Assin North by-election. These voters took money meant to buy their vote but still chose to vote against the government’s candidate. He emphasized that the money belongs to the people and encouraged them to ignore any false claims that taking the money will harm them spiritually if they don’t vote for the NPP. The former president acknowledged that the NPP would bring money and material goods to influence voters. He urged the electorate to accept these offerings but to vote genuinely based on their own convictions during the election. Mr. Mahama was accompanied by Ex-Speaker Doe Adjaho, who also warned against selling one’s vote. Mr. Adjaho cautioned the people of Frankadua about the potential consequences of accepting money for their vote, stating that they may not receive such financial benefits in the future, which could negatively affect their families. He pleaded with the chiefs not to be deceived and advised the electorate to avoid engaging in tribal politics. Mr. Adjaho stressed the importance of electing a representative from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to Parliament while electing John Mahama as president. He urged the people of Frankadua to prioritize their future and not be swayed by short-term gains. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of practicing the values they have been taught rather than succumbing to divisive tribal politics. Former Speaker Urges Electorate to Reject Vote Selling in Upcoming Elections
In a recent speech during former President John Mahama’s visit to Frankadua in the Eastern Region, ex-Speaker Doe Adjaho passionately encouraged voters not to succumb to the temptation of selling their votes in the forthcoming national elections. Addressing the chiefs and people of Frankadua, Mr Adjaho warned against being deceived by monetary offers, emphasizing that accepting such deals would mean compromising one’s birthright. He further explained that this short-term gain may not be received again in the future, ultimately affecting the well-being of their families. In his plea to the chiefs, Mr Adjaho urged them to resist falling prey to such tactics. Additionally, he advised against practicing a “skirt-and-blouse” voting approach, whereby voters select a chief from one party but elect a representative from another party. Instead, he urged them to elect a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to represent their interests in Parliament, while also electing John Mahama as President. Highlighting the challenging times the country currently faces, Mr Adjaho implored voters to look beyond temporary gains and prioritize the betterment of their collective future. He urged them not to be swayed by offered money, but rather to vote against those engaging in such practices. The former Speaker also emphasized the importance of steering clear of tribal politics. He cautioned against allowing individuals to manipulate them through such divisive tactics, instead urging the electorate to uphold the values they have been instilled with and make decisions based on merit and national interests. Mr Adjaho’s message serves as a reminder to the people of Frankadua and the wider electorate that their votes hold immense significance and should not be compromised for short-term personal gain. By resisting vote-selling, they can uphold the integrity of the electoral process and contribute to a better future for themselves and their families. Former President Mahama Calls for Vigilance on Bank of Ghana’s Use of IMF Funds
Former President John Mahama has urged the minority caucus to closely monitor the Bank of Ghana’s handling of the recent disbursement of $600 million by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This disbursement is part of a $3 billion three-year extended credit facility approved in May 2023. Mahama expressed concerns about the Bank of Ghana’s role in exacerbating Ghana’s economic challenges by flooding the market with newly-printed currency. In a Facebook post, Mahama emphasized the need for responsible and judicious use of the IMF funds by the government. He called on the outgoing NPP government to exercise caution and urged other development partners like the World Bank to closely monitor the utilization of funds. Mahama assured the public that his party would closely scrutinize the government’s actions concerning the funds. The minority caucus, led by Cassiel Ato Forson, previously marched to demand the resignation of the Bank of Ghana’s Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his deputies. They accused the Bank of printing GHS80 billion ($14.4 billion) illegally between 2021 and 2022, contributing to a hyperinflation rate of 54.1% in December 2022. The caucus alleged that GHS22.04 billion ($3.98 billion) of the printed money was used to support the government’s budget without parliamentary approval, leading to an increase in poverty levels. The Bank of Ghana denied these allegations, explaining that the referenced GHS22.04 billion was part of the total financing captured in the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review document. The central bank clarified that the losses and negative equity recorded were technical and related to accounting standards and expected credit losses from government debt. Governor Addison reminded Ghanaians that historical financial statements showed previous episodes of negative equity, which were resolved successfully. Governor Addison affirmed that the Bank of Ghana had enough income to cover operational costs and maintained sufficient capital. He highlighted that the Bank had complied with applicable laws and vehemently denied claims of annual financing of the government. He explained that financing had only occurred during the pandemic in 2020 and the crisis year of 2022, both within the boundaries of the Bank of Ghana Act. The Bank of Ghana stressed its commitment to managing operational costs and continued adherence to legal requirements. It reassured the public that its financial position would not negatively impact its operations. The Bank promised to reduce costs further and reassess the capital position in the year 2027. Former President Mahama’s calls for vigilance on the use of IMF funds reflects the ongoing scrutiny of the Bank of Ghana’s actions, as allegations of printing money without proper authorization contribute to concerns about the country’s economic stability. NPP and Akufo-Addo treating dumsor like a football, he wants to kick it over the 7th January 2025—John Mahama
According to former President John Mahama, President Nana Akufo-Addo is purposely leaving behind the issue of erratic power supply, known as dumsor, for his successor. Ghana is currently facing power supply issues due to a $19 million debt owed to the West African Pipeline Company. The government has paid $13 million of the debt and is in talks to establish a payment plan for the remaining $6 million. During his “Building Ghana Tour” in Sogakope, Mr. Mahama criticized the government’s decision to impose various taxes on electricity consumers, including Value Added Tax, COVID levy, NHIL levy, and GETFUND Levy. He claimed that these taxes would significantly increase the cost of electricity bills, making it difficult for businesses to operate. He also accused the President and his administration of mismanagement and excessive expenditure, stating that reducing expenditures would alleviate the burden on taxpayers. Additionally, Mr. Mahama promised that if he wins the 2024 polls, he would prioritize completing ongoing and abandoned projects inherited from the current government, rather than starting new ones. He criticized the Akufo-Addo government for abandoning projects and starting new ones that they cannot finish, leaving a financial burden for future leaders. He pledged to use available resources to finish ongoing projects and refrain from initiating new ones. Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Mahama accused NPP of using thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies in the last elections
In a statement commemorating Constitutional Day on January 7, 2024, former President John Mahama called on the Akufo-Addo government to stop undermining democratic rights. He expressed concern over the use of thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies to disrupt elections, resulting in the loss of eight lives during the 2020 elections. Mahama described this as a shameful day for Ghana and a stain on the country’s democratic reputation built over the past 31 years. He also criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo for not offering any sympathy to the families of the victims and allowing those responsible for the killings to remain unpunished in positions of authority and power. Read the full statement below: STATEMENT BY HE JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA AND 2024 FLAG BEARER OF THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS ON THE 31ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOURTH REPUBLIC Today marks 31 years since the 1992 Constitution restored democratic governance in Ghana. As leader and flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress, the party that led the current constitutional order, I am proud of our nation’s democracy despite its challenges. Although imperfect, democratic governance has served us well and offers hope for our nation’s sustained progress. The occasion of this anniversary offers yet another opportunity for collective reflection on where we have faltered and how we can consolidate whatever gains we have made. True democracy goes beyond elections; it should improve governance, enhance individual freedoms, and, most importantly, ensure a decent quality of life for citizens. On this occasion, I recognise the leadership of President Jerry John Rawlings in the establishment of the 1992 Constitution and the major role played by President Atta Mills in setting up the Constitution Review Commission. As a citizen of Ghana, I regret the legal obstacles that hindered the Constitution Review Implementation Committee from implementing the Government White Paper on the recommendations of the Commission. On this auspicious occasion, as leader of the National Democratic Congress, I wish to reiterate my commitment to continue the various processes towards implementing the white paper, if elected President in December 2024, focusing on strengthening governance institutions, protecting citizens’ rights, and fighting corruption. The reforms will aim to reduce the influence of an overreaching executive, put an end to the creeping politicisation of state institutions, reduce excessive spending on Article 71 officeholders to bridge the unacceptable disparity between them and other categories of workers and strengthen the fundamental rights of all citizens. Fellow countrymen and women, we should, together, uphold our collective responsibility to sustain our democracy, and I call on all duty-bearers to comply with constitutional principles. I urge the current government to refrain from actions that continue to undermine democratic rights under their administration. The use of thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies to disrupt elections in some parts of the country as occurred in the 2020 elections, leading to the loss of eight (8) lives, will forever be remembered as Ghana’s day of infamy and an indelible blemish on our democratic credentials established over the last 31 years of constitutional rule. On a rather sad note, it is unconscionable that three years after these tragic events, our President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families. The perpetrators of these murders continue to walk as free men and still hold on to positions of authority and power. This government must appreciate that they have an obligation to guarantee peaceful elections this year and the loss of even one Ghanaian life will not be countenanced. I urge all Ghanaians to exercise eternal vigilance as we prepare for elections later this year to ensure that no abuses of the system ensue and that only the choice of the people, exercised freely, prevails. I extend a hearty congratulations to all Ghanaians on this august occasion. May the coming years see our democracy flourish even further, and may Ghana rise again to become the beacon of success envisioned by our forebears. Sunday, January 07, 2024.
