John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced that if elected as president, his government will prioritize strengthening anti-corruption measures in Ghana. In a speech delivered on January 3, 2024, Mahama expressed his passion for fighting corruption and vowed to create a favorable environment for anti-corruption agencies to hold government officials accountable for misconduct. “We will hold to account members of this administration who have abused the public trust by misconducting themselves in office. But more importantly, we would also allow unfettered space for the anti-corruption agencies to deal with anybody who abuses the public trust under my administration. “By strengthening anti-corruption measures, promoting good governance and upholding the rule of law, we shall create a fairer and more equitable society where everyone can thrive. We will reduce the size of government in our bid to cut down on expenditure,” he  stressed He also pledged to reduce the size of government by combining ministries and eliminating redundant government agencies. Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the clergy for their failure to speak out against the government’s excessive borrowing and extravagant spending, which he believes are the main causes of the country’s economic challenges. During a visit to the Bono Region, Mahama expressed his disappointment with the clergy for remaining silent while the government borrowed funds for non-existent projects. He argued that if the clergy had spoken up against the government’s borrowing spree, the country wouldn’t be facing its current economic difficulties. Mahama also lamented that the clergy’s silence allowed the situation to worsen. On a separate note, the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Rev Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, highlighted the issue of unbridled corruption in Ghana. He questioned why Ghana, despite being an oil-producer, is still impoverished and facing financial crises. Today, a delegation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by former President John Dramani Mahama visited former President JA Kufuor and his family to express their condolences on the passing of former First Lady Theresa Kufuor. Accompanied by his wife, former First Lady Lordina, Mr. Mahama described the deceased as the mother of the Nation during her time as First Lady due to her graceful personality. The delegation included the national chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chair of the NDC Council of Elders, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, members of the NDC Council of Elders, and the party’s Political Committee.
