The Minority in Parliament has demanded the immediate review and scrapping of taxes on petroleum products which they argue constitutes about 40% of the price build-up in the 2022 budget. According to the NDC MPs, such a move will cushion Ghanaians who have had to endure about 43% increment in prices of petroleum products this year alone. Addressing the media moments ago, minority spokesperson on mines and energy John Jinapor accused the Nana Addo administration of compounding problems of Ghanaians by increasing taxes on petroleum products. Mr Jinapor said the excuse from the government that a litre of fuel is selling at almost Ghc7.0 cedis as a result of prices on the world market is untenable. “Ladies and gentlemen, it may interest you to know that within a spate of just one-year fuel prices have risen from 4.77 cedis per litre to 6.8 cedis per litre representing a whopping 43% increment under this insensitive government. These astronomical increases has resulted in untold hardship which is threatening lives of ordinary Ghanaians. “The Minority has equally taken notice of the lame and flimsy excuse from government and its communicators that they cannot do much to cushion Ghanaians because in their own words “they do not control the world market price of crude”. What they have failed to inform Ghanaian is that the devaluation of the cedi is a major contributor to these astronomical increases. “We wish to state emphatically that we completely and flatly reject these lame excuses from government; the question we seek an answer to is “since when did the current NPP government led by President Akufo Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia realise that government had no control over world market prices? “Ladies and gentlemen, is it not these same people who promised the people of Ghana prior to assuming office that they will abolish the energy sector levies describing them as obnoxious and further promising to move the country from taxation to production? “On the contrary, what Ghanaians are witnessing under this government is a complete display of incompetence, arrogance, and deception as far as the Energy sector is concerned.” Below is the full statement by the Minority STATEMENT READ BY HON. JOHN ABDULAI JINAPOR ON THE RECENT FUEL HIKES UNDER THE AKUFO ADDO/BAWUMIA-LED GOVERNMENT. Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen of the press. We welcome you to this Press Conference by the NDC parliamentary caucus and wish to begin by expressing our gratitude to the media for your continuous support in the professional discharge of your duties. The Minority has followed with keen interest the persistent and rampant increment in fuel prices which appears to be worsening in recent times with no hope in sight. The recent astronomical increases in fuel prices at the pumps and its attendant high cost of living to the ordinary Ghanaian cannot be glossed over. Ladies and gentlemen, it may interest you to know that within a spate of just one year fuel prices have risen from 4.77 cedis per litre to 6.8 cedis per litre representing a whopping 43% increment under this insensitive government. These astronomical increases has resulted in untold hardship which is threatening lives of ordinary Ghanaians. The Minority has equally taken notice of the lame and flimsy excuse from government and its communicators that they cannot do much to cushion Ghanaians because in their own words “they do not control the world market price of crude”. What they have failed to inform Ghanaian is that the devaluation of the cedi is a major contributor to these astronomical increases. We wish to state emphatically that we completely and flatly reject these lame excuses from government; the question we seek an answer to is “since when did the current NPP government led by President Akufo Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia realise that government had no control over world market prices? Ladies and gentlemen, is it not these same people who promised the people of Ghana prior to assuming office that they will abolish the energy sector levies describing them as obnoxious and further promised to move the country from taxation to production? On the contrary, what Ghanaians are witnessing under this government is a complete display of incompetence, arrogance, and deception as far as the Energy sector is concerned. Not only have they retained the so-called obnoxious taxes, they have gone a step further to increase the existing taxes and in some instance introduced new draconian taxes which continues to worsen the living conditions of the already impoverished citizens of this country. Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, it will be recalled that the Akufo-Addo government during the course of the year announced a paltry 4% increase in wages for public sector workers for the 2021 financial year, by comparing this wage increment against the current inflation of about 10.6% (Bank of Ghana), one can only come to the conclusion that the ordinary worker is already worse off and therefore cannot be burdened further with such astronomical increases in fuel prices as this negatively impacts on the cost of living. In short, the income of workers are really not increasing but the steep rise in prices of essential commodities is making it so unbearable for the citizenry to cope under the economy. As a result of bad leadership under Akufo Addo and Bawumia, the level of frustration and discontent are fast spreading among the populace with increasing loss of confidence in the current administration. Members of the press gathered here, despite the announcement of a so-called 100 billion cedis “Obatampa Cares Programme” in the 2021 budget, the ordinary Ghanaian is today faced with unprecedented hardship, suffering and excruciating poverty with no hope in sight. The current state of the Ghanaian economy clearly signals complete despair, characterized by a mounting unsustainable debt level which threatens the very foundation of the economy. Is this what we were promised prior to the December 2020 elections. Rather than taking the necessary and pragmatic steps towards ameliorating the suffering of the citizenry from their harsh policies, the NPP government
‘The NDC had deliberately stabbed itself in the eye”– Kwesi Pratt Jnr
Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper Kwesi Pratt Jnr has poured his unstoppable anger at the leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament for voting for MPs he described as not competent, despite calls from party followers across the country not approve the nominees. “The leadership of the National Democratic Congress not just in parliament, but all levels takes their members and their support for granted.” “I have always said that in approving ministers, the most important thing should be the national interest: are the ministers competent enough to handle their portfolios or not, and clearly it is obvious that some of the people who were approved are not competent enough to handle the portfolios that they have been given,” “You take the minister who has no idea about the structure of her sector and yet NDC people have made it possible for her to become a minister. This is disgraceful and in fact, they refused to listen to all the warnings which were sounded.” According to Mr. Pratt Jnr, the actions exhibited by the National Democratic Congress Members of Parliament(MPs) will have repercussions in the 2024 elections. “I told them in plain language that it will have repercussions in the 2024 elections. Who is going to risk his life and vote for you when you are going to betray them in this manner?” “the NDC had deliberately stabbed itself in the eye” He spoke on Good Morning Africa on Pan African TV monitored Apexnewsgh.com Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana/Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Minority slams ‘Gestapo-style invasion’ of Parliament by security personnel
The Minority in Parliament has condemned what it calls the heavy deployment of security to Parliament. In a statement, the Minority described the security deployment as “heavy-handed and Gestapo-style invasion” of Parliament. “We strongly condemn the obvious creeping despotism and blatant misuse of the national security apparatus to advance narrow parochial partisan interests,” the statement added. The Minority further demanded the “immediate withdrawal of this detachment of soldiers, police personnel and purported national security operatives.” It is worried that security presence could lead to the “desecration of our highly revered parliamentary democracy and a grave affront to the dignity of the legislative arm.” The Minority further stressed that it held President Akufo-Addo responsible for the deployment. “We shall hold him liable for any breach or obstruction in the discharge of our lawful functions,” it added. The Minority is currently at odds with the state after its leader, Haruna Iddrisu, and 19 of his caucus members were charged with unlawful assembly after they marched to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) head office in Accra in December to present a petition. During their march, there were physical confrontations with police personnel who tried to halt their march. They were expected in court on Monday but did not show up. Mr. Iddrisu said members of the Minority Caucus have not been served with any court summons. In addition, he said the Ghana Police Service was allowing itself to be manipulated by the state. Find below the full statement NDC CAUCUS IN PARLIAMENT CONDEMNS GESTAPO-STYLE SECURITY INVASION OF PARLIAMENT AND DEMANDS THEIR IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL The NDC Caucus in Parliament notes with disgust and utter revulsion the heavy-handed and Gestapo-style invasion of the august House of Parliament by security personnel at the behest of the Akufo-Addo administration. We strongly condemn the obvious creeping despotism and blatant misuse of the national security apparatus to advance narrow parochial partisan interests. Parliaments in every democratic jurisdiction represent the bulwark of democratic freedoms and we insist that this excessive abuse of state power to intimidate Members of Parliament represents a desecration of our highly revered parliamentary democracy and a grave affront to the dignity of the legislative arm. It is to uphold the universal tenets of good parliamentary democracy that our Standing Orders provide in Order 30: “The following acts or conduct shall constitute a breach of privilege or contempt of Parliament – I) causing or effecting the arrest of a Member or officer of Parliament during the proceedings of Parliament or in the course of his duties; J) molestation of Members or officers in connection with the performance of their duties in or out of Parliament; L) attempted intimidation by threats of Members in the conduct of their duties.” We hold President Akufo-Addo as Commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and Chair of the National Security Council directly responsible for this unwarranted and reckless deployment. We shall hold him liable for any breach or obstruction in the discharge of our lawful functions. The NDC caucus in Parliament demands the immediate withdrawal of this detachment of soldiers, police personnel and purported national security operatives. We shall continue to resist the mindless assault on the pillars of our constitutional democracy. Ghana is not a dictatorship. Those who seek to erode our democratic gains and usher us into a tyrannic dispensation would be fought and defeated. The NDC Parliamentary Caucus refuses to sit idle and allow the House of the People’s Representatives to be taken hostage in scenes reminiscent of the recent state-sponsored thuggery witnessed at EC Collation Centres where similar invasions led to needless loss of lives and injuries. We are not a group to be intimidated by guns and might when we know we are on the side of the people, on the side of right, on the side of good conscience, on the side of justice and on the side of our national anthem which admonishes us to resist oppressor’s rule. We will investigate COVID-19 Fund–Haruna Iddrisu
Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has hinted that the National Democratic Congress representatives in Parliament are going to make sure that expenditure surrounded by the Coronavirus Pandemic must be investigated. According to the Minority Leader, who was addressing the media after listening to the President State of the Nation Address (SONA) on January 5, 2021, COVID-19 which was allocated to be spent on Public Health was rather diverted to buy votes. “We will be investigating COVID and the money they spend on the election, instead of spending the money on Public Health, they were dishing it around, they were sharing it around men and women across the doors to get votes and the media, you must be interested in one of the most dangerous things Nana Addo has done to our democracy is huge money he used in this election. Going forward to undermine the integrity of any competitive democratic process, it has never happened before. Even at polling station people sharing money and putting money in mask and you think that gives you a democracy?” He lamented Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana/Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications.
