Naysayers can’t stop me; ‘I’ll build National Cathedral come what may’ – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has said the avalanche of criticisms hurled at him in connection with the National Cathedral project will not deter him from continuing with the construction of the edifice in the remaining two years of his last tenure. Expressing gratitude to the clergy for their support for the project, Mr Akufo-Addo said at a New Year church service at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, 10 January 2023: “It’s always [good] that we hear encouragement because a lot of the time, you hear harsh criticisms and I think to hear encouragement from very responsible members of the community is also something very heartwarming and encouraging”, adding: “It only reinforces our determination to see how we can do it. He said despite the fact that “times are difficult”, it is such situations that call for resolution, strength, and commitment. “And that is what, hopefully, I am showing and my government is showing with the determination that, come what may, we’ll work our way out of the difficulties we have in this country,” he said. He said the hard times are “not permanent, noting: “Ghana is a land with many possibilities, and even though we are caught up in a global conjuncture like many other countries, we can still find our way forward. And that’s my determination”. Mr Akufo-Addo said: “I am determined, come what may, I have two more years, that whatever the case, the National Cathedral will be at a very advanced stage before I leave office. I think it is important that we do it.” “All the reasons that I’ve given and continue to give that there will be critics and naysayers; I think we have to take it as they are all part of life. But it should not be a sign of discouragement to us to be able to go forward,” he added. A few weeks ago, President Akufo-Addo said his decision to build the cathedral to the glory of God has more supporters than the ‘Sanballats and Tobiahs’ against it. “Just like Sanballat and Tobiahs in the days of Nehemiah, there are some who do not share my views on the building of the National Cathedral”, the president said, adding: “I respect their right to differ but I am confident my decision [is backed] by the vast numbers of enthusiastic supporters of this project, whose spiritual dimension is limitless”. The president made the comment on Sunday, 18 December 2022, when he delivered an address at the centenary celebration of the Ga Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, held at the Black Star Square, Accra. The president noted that upon completion, the National Cathedral will serve not only as the country’s collective thanksgiving “to the Almighty for the blessings He has bestowed on our nation, sparing us the ravages of civil war that have bedevilled the histories of virtually all our neighbours, and the outbreak of deadly mass epidemics but also as a rallying point for the entire Christian community of Ghana, which represents seventy-plus per cent of the population.” Addressing the congregation, which included the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, the asked the Ga Presbytery, and, indeed, all Christians, to continue to pray for Ghana’s peace and unity, so the nation can move forward in unity. “I need the support of every Ghanaian, together with the prayers of the church, to help me and my government carry out our mandate successfully. Pray for me so that Almighty God will continue to give me wisdom, strength, courage and compassion to enable me to execute my duties as a good leader. With Him, all things are possible, as the battle is the Lord’s. For this, too, shall pass”, President Akufo-Addo said. Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, recently said the National Cathedral is not a sensible project to undertake in the midst of an economic crisis. In his view, the government could use the site for the project, for a more sensible venture. Speaking at a roundtable organised by the Citizen’s Coalition in Accra on Thursday, 15 December 2022, Professor Prempeh said making allocations for the cathedral in the 2023 budget beats his imagination. “When you are in a crisis, you can do exceptional things, I don’t see anything in the budget to suggest that this is a crisis and that this is being done as an emergency measure,” Professor Prempeh said. “This is not the time for vanity projects but we have preserved a vanity project in the form of the cathedral. I was expecting that this being a crisis period, we will reflect on that decision and say: ‘even if this is sensible to do at all’ – and I do not think so – that it will not be the appropriate period or we will change the idea to something else”. “There is a lot that we can still do with that site which can make sense”. “So, generally it is a missed opportunity in terms of seeing this as a crisis moment and seeing it as a moment to reset the button”, Prof Prempeh noted. “I think we have not quite done that”, he stressed. “It looks to me that it is purely an emergency thing targeted at the IMF to approve a loan, as opposed to something that is going deep into the structure and our governance,” Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh admonished in his assessment. Prof Prempeh is in good company with pressure group OccupyGhana which recently recommended that the government suspend all public expenditure on the National Cathedral considering that the country is going through an economic crisis. “Whatever arguments there might have been to support spending now-non-existent money on the proposed National Cathedral, have been eroded by the dire straits that the nation faces”, the group said in a statement. “Our current situation makes the continued commitment in the budget to spend GHS80m on the cathedral, look like a vanity project”,

Conflict from Sahel to West African coastal countries forcing the region to spend more on security–Prez, Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said, conflict from the Sahel to West African coastal countries is causing the region to spend more on security. President Akufo-Addo noted that the conflict has moved from the Sahel, inexorably, to the West African coastal countries, with all of Ghana’s neighbors suffering terrorist attacks, with some losing territorial space to the invading forces. He made the pronouncement at the United Nations General Assembly, on Wednesday, 21st September, in New York. “the terrorist pressure has provided a pretext for the unhappy reappearance of military rule in three (3) of the fifteen (15) member ECOWAS Community, two (2) of whom have borne the brunt of the terrorist outrages in the Region – Mali and Burkina Faso”. He said, “All of us in the Region are being forced to spend huge amounts of money on security. This is money we should be spending on educating and giving skills to our young people; on building much-needed roads, bridges, hospitals, and other such infrastructure, which we are spending to fight terrorists or to keep them out from destabilizing our countries.” President Akufo-Addo described it, as a global problem, that deserves the attention of the world community for a global solution. Akufo-Addo demand Int’l financial system reform; says is against Africa

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has demanded urgent reform of the international financial system, as he believes the current monetary system is targeted against developing countries. President Akufo-Addo: “the financial markets have been set up and operate on rules designed for the benefit of rich and powerful nations, and, during times of crisis, the façade of international co-operation, under which they purport to operate, disappears.” He made the demand at the United Nations General Assembly, on Wednesday, 21st September, in New York. “These are the savage lessons that we have had to take in, as the world emerged from the grip of the coronavirus to energy and food price hikes, and a worldwide rise in the cost of living. The necessity for reform of the system is compelling.”“our world is currently not in a good place”, he recalled an observation by the World Bank which has described the global economy as “enduring its steepest slowdown since 1970.” Pointing out the devastating global economic pandemic, pushing Africa into its worst recession for half a century, President Akufo-Addo said that a slump in productivity and revenues, increased pressures on spending and spiraling public debts confronted the continent without relent. “As we grappled with these economic challenges, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine burst upon us, aggravating an already difficult situation. It is not just the dismay that we feel at seeing such deliberate devastation of cities and towns in Europe in the year 2022, we are feeling this war directly in our lives in Africa. Every bullet, every bomb, every shell that hits a target in Ukraine, hits our pockets and our economies in Africa,” he said. “the number one enemy this year”, President Akufo-Addo noted that “it hit a 40-year-high in the US and UK in recent months. There is record inflation in the eurozone. Several African countries have inflation rates surging three to four times higher than what they were just two years ago.” However, the President pointed out that “we are experiencing the highest inflation for 21 years. The high costs of food are hurting the poor, especially the urban poor, the most.” He said The spillover from the raising of interest rates by central banks across the world to combat inflation, according to the President, has been severe beyond borders, as global investors pull money out of developing economies to invest in bonds in the developed world. This, he explained further, has led to depreciating currencies and increased borrowing costs; meaning economies in Africa need to raise and spend more of their own currencies to service foreign debts in US dollars. “It has become clear, if ever there was any doubt, that the international financial structure is skewed significantly against developing and emerging economies like Ghana. The avenues that are opened to powerful nations to enable them to take measures that would ease pressures on their economies are closed to small nations,” he said. To make matters worse, President Akufo-Addo noted that “credit rating agencies have been quick to downgrade economies in Africa, making it harder to service our debts. The tag of Africa as investment risk is little more than, in substance, a self-fulfilling prophecy created by the prejudice of the international money market, which denies us access to cheaper borrowing, pushing us deeper into debts.” History, the President stressed, “will judge us harshly if we do not seize the opportunity to make the changes that will enable us to deal with the many problems we face.” Source: Apexnewsgh.com For publication please kindly contact us on 0256336062 or Email: apexnewsgh@gmail.com

CPP Secretary demands for Akufo-Addo’s resignation

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) Secretary has demanded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s resignation. The demand came as a result of what the party labeled as the mismanagement of the economy by the Akufo-Addo-led government since assuming office. According to the CPP General Secretary of the party, Nana Yaa Gyantuah, President Akufo-Addo has not followed the promises he made to Ghanaians in the fight against galamsey and the protection of the public purse. In an event organized in celebration of Ghana’s founder Kwame Nkrumah, on Wednesday, 21 September 2022, Nana Yaa Gyantuah said: “Almost all our water bodies have been destroyed because of galamsey… I think it is time for him to resign. I think it is time for Nana Akufo-Addo to put down his job and allow competent people to take over.” She believes the CPP will be able to turn the fortunes of the country around when the opportunity is given.“We the CPP will go strictly to all procurement rules to reduce infractions in government spending and limit looting and even erase loot and share,” she said. “We would also ensure that the law that allows foreign investors to repatriate 100 percent profits will be amended to a 60 percent share.” However, the party further cited the depreciation of the cedi, high inflation rate, and the frequent hike in fuel prices, as reasons President Akufo-Addo should resign his post. People who cannot afford food for families call me for assistance—Edward Bawa

The Member of Parliament for Bongo Constituency Edward Bawa has lamented, that the current hardship under the watch of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has rendered hard workers useless to the extent, that they can no longer afford food for their families. Apexnewsgh.com report “We are in very serious times, we seem to be making jokes out of the problem that we have and until you lead individuals, you will not know how serious it is. Throughout my life I have known people who never in their life call me Eddy.. charlly it is hot today ooo, if you have this amount give it to me because I can’t make it and these are people throughout my existence and throughout the period I have known them, they have never asked me for a favor because they are capable of taking care of themselves and their families but now, these same people simply cannot make put food on the table. Not because they are lazy, not because they have refused to work harder, but just because the system will not reward them for the hard work they put in. that is exactly where we found ourselves in. We have people who could afford three meals a day and now even one meal they have to negotiate with their family, there are people whose jobs have messed up and they have no job to do”. Adding to his earlier observation, the MP Said: “I know a number of people in Accra who have decided to park their cars because they cannot buy fuel and not because they are playing politics” he pointed He was speaking at a TEIN induction programme organized  by the youth wing of the party at the Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) which was covered by Apexnewsgh.com. Those who take you to IMF cannot break the 8–Kennedy Agyapong

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has said the New Patriotic Party cannot win the 2024 elections with the same faces taking the country to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a financial bailout. Engaging Party members at the ongoing NPP National Constituency Officers Welfare workshop at Koforidua in the Eastern Region Friday, Mr. Agyapong expressed disgust about the move by the government to seek a bailout from the IMF. “You are sitting here and you are smiling. IMF? What are we going to say again? Somebody texted me that I shouldn’t say anything about the IMF, I shouldn’t say anything about IMF? I will say it”. “Going into IMF is just like giving over power to NDC without a contest straightaway. Because the noise makes and I chew my own words back when I said NDC Went to IMF because of their mismanagement of the country or the economy”. “So, if NPP is going to IMF what am I going to say again? So, breaking the 8 is going to be tough. You cannot use the face of those who took us to IMF to break the 8, I won’t work. My message to you is simple, you cannot read my lips, and am not scared of anybody in the party, I will tell you the gospel truth.” Those who take you to IMF, those same faces cannot break the 8. A word to the wise is enough. I am very very sad today, when I saw the publication that we are going to IMF. You know, that is what Mahama was praying for and he has gotten his wish. It will not be easy, it will take hard work. So, prepare ourselves knowing there is a task ahead of us, and therefore, is only unity that will make sell through breaking the 8. GHS175m Nestlé plant opened by President Akufo-Addo

On Wednesday, 8th June 2022, I commissioned the GH¢175.4 million state-of-the-art plant of Nestlé Ghana, located in Tema, which is manufacturing infant cereals for the domestic market, as well as for markets in other countries in Central and West Africa. This investment by a major multinational company does not only underscore the confidence that Nestlé and its shareholders have in the Ghanaian economy, but it is also a signal to the global business community that the Ghanaian economy is recovering to its pre-COVID-19 levels. I am not one to ever pontificate on who qualifies to make it to Heaven or Hell–Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disassociated himself from the claim that he ever said President Akufo-Addo will not make it to heaven because he is constructing a national cathedral. Mr. Ablakwa described those allegations as “malicious and ridiculous”. Read his full statement: Disclaimer: Kindly ignore the pathetically malicious and ridiculous claim that I have said President Akufo-Addo won’t make it to Heaven because he’s constructing a national cathedral. All those who have cared to listen to me on the matter in issue will attest to the fact that I have been consistent about the blatant constitutional violations, a flagrant breach of procurement laws and misplaced priorities at this time of excruciating economic crisis — those have been my paramount focus as MP, conscious of my constitutional mandate. As Christians, the Biblical injunction is not to judge others, and to work out our own salvation; I am not one to ever pontificate on who qualifies to make it to Heaven or Hell. It is most blasphemous for mischievous elements to portray me as the gatekeeper in Heaven or the custodian of the Book of Life for that matter. The juvenile attempts to malign the messenger instead of responding to the germane issues which are of enormous public interest cannot provide a cover for the egregious and ungodly legal violations that have been occasioned with impunity under the guise of fulfilling the President’s personal pledge to the Almighty. I don’t make promises I can’t keep – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said he does not make promises he cannot fulfil. He made the comment when he cut sod for the construction of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences (UEAS), in Bunso, in the Eastern Region on Friday, 20 May 2022. It will be recollected that in this year’s message on the State of the Nation to Parliament on 30 March 2022, President Akufo-Addo indicated that steps were being taken to turn the planned Bunso campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development into a standalone, independent University dedicated to the study of Engineering. “I also indicated that construction of this campus will begin within the next three (3) months. As you already know, President Akufo-Addo does not make promises he cannot fulfil and I am happy that we are all gathered here at Bunso to cut the sod for the construction of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, which will be a Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Applied Sciences and Built Environment,” the President said. Addressing the gathering, which included the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, President Akufo-Addo stated that the world, as we know it, is essentially driven by technology. He stated that energy, industry, agriculture, medicine and health, clean air and water, transportation, sanitation, the use, management and conservation of natural resources – all are based ultimately on science and technology. “So, it is obvious that to be a part of this modern world, there must be science and technology elements at all levels of the development process. This means that a country’s development depends on its ability to understand, adapt, produce and commercialise scientific and technological knowledge in ways appropriate to its culture, aspirations and level of development,” he added. This, he explained, will help shape the fulfilment of the national dream, “which is to meet basic challenges of survival, such as providing food, shelter, clothing, health and security for the people, and creating the wealth that will guarantee the prosperity of present and future generations”. The President noted that, over the last five years, his government has increasingly implemented initiatives and programmes rooted in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), with the goal being to ensure a target of 60:40 science-humanities ratio, and also educate a critical mass of the Ghanaian population for science-related jobs, which will define their future employability. “I am, thus, happy to note that this year’s enrolment of TVET students in Senior High Schools has reached record levels – forty-four thousand (44,000) students, representing a one hundred per cent (100%) increase over the 2021 enrolment figure. Our Gross Tertiary Enrolment Ratio, measuring enrolment in tertiary education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the population, which stood at 18.8% as of 2021, has increased significantly to 20% this year,” he added. UEAS When completed, the President stated that UEAS will be the second public University in the Eastern Region, which will focus on satisfying human resource demands from domestic industries. “The establishment of this University is also part of the government’s response to the current national preoccupation with food security. The University will provide leadership in teaching, research and public outreach across a number of fields, and will help address problems that affect our food security, and enhance future competitiveness of Ghana’s industries in a sustainable manner,” he added. The President thanked the Export-Import Bank of Korea and the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of the Republic of Korea for providing the ninety-million-dollar (US$90,000,000) facility for the construction of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, Bunso Project. He urged the stakeholders – the Ministry of Education, the contractors and consultants, amongst others – to work within schedule and budget. President Akufo-Addo also used the occasion to express the sincere appreciation of the government and the Ghanaian people to the Government and people of the Republic of Korea for their continuous cooperation with Ghana and assured them of Ghana’s determination to deepen and expand the bonds of friendship between the two countries. “Osagyefo, Nananom, I am excited to be here once again, and, by the grace of God, I will be here again, in twenty-four (24) months’ time, to commission the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences. And I have the great honour and pleasure to cut the sod for the commencement of its construction,” the President concluded. —classfm

Akufo-Addo’s has listened to the counsel from an overwhelming number of outraged Ghanaians–Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said he can confirm President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s has listened to the counsel from an overwhelming number of outraged Ghanaians and decides to flew commercial aboard United Airlines on his current trip to the United States. According to the North Tongu law maker, the president must have taken cognizance of criticisms that he was travelling on chartered flights at the expense of the Ghanaian taxpayer. “I can confirm that President Akufo-Addo appears to have listened to good counsel from an overwhelming number of outraged Ghanaians and so flew commercial aboard United Airlines on his current trip to the United States. Further tracking and our usually unimpeachable surveillance also reveals that he hasn’t done a “meet me there” on this particular travel as he has completely avoided his favourite ultra-luxury toys which he seems addicted to in recent years. At generous conservative estimates, the Ghanaian taxpayer has been spared some US$442,000.00 which translates to savings of 3.3million Ghana Cedis. Considering the President’s profligate and obstinate track record, we should probably consider his latest conduct as a Damascus experience, especially as he was on his way to speak at the Museum of the Bible, where he declared himself a Christian in politics”.
