The Sixteen Regional Youth Organisers of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have descended heavily on the loud mouth NDC presenter, Kevin Ekow Taylor for attacking their National Youth Organiser, Lawyer George Opare Addo over some cars he allegedly rejected. The youth organisers have also been explaining the circumstances leading to the rejection of some 16 vehicles donated to them by the 2020 flagbearer, ahead of the 2020 elections. Kevin Taylor as gathered on one of his shows alleged that Mr Opare Addo was a chief instigator of a mass rejection of vehicles that were offered by the defeated flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, to the youth wing ahead of the 2020 election. The NDC youth organisers who aren’t happy with the allegations against their boss, in a statement rubbished the claims by Kelvin Taylor saying “Without mincing words, this claim is an unblemished untruth cooked in a dilapidated kitchen of mischief and served on the cracked plate of falsehood”. According to them, they cannot be discarded or lured into any agenda that turns against the ideals of the NDC and the flagbearer as suggested by Kevin Taylor. They noted that they are independent and can see through the deceit of Kevin Taylor to cause disaffection among them and the NDC. They explained that the decision to reject the vehicle was a collective decision taken by the 16 Regional Youth Organisers without the involvement of Mr Opare Addo popularly called Pablo as the said vehicles were fuel guzzlers which may not serve their purpose. “It is an affront to our intelligence for any person to suggest that it was Pablo [George Opare Addo] who instigated us to reject the vehicles. All 16 Regional Youth Organisers are independent-minded individuals with different orientations when it comes to making decisions. No decision has been taken by the Caucus without subjecting it to checkmate decisions.” DGN Online has gathered that these vehicles that were to be gifted to the 16 Regional Youth Organisers, the Caucus stated that it was by the effort of the National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo that they got wind about it, adding that two of the vehicles were shown to them for demonstration purposes so they could believe it was theirs for the taking. The Youth wing claimed that the make of the car and the cost of operation could be a burden on them and decided to turn down the offer on the blind side of Pablo. In a statement, they then suggested having a letter issued to the National Chairman and the flagbearer to explain their decision and also hope for a change of the vehicles to fit their ‘budget’. The statement concluded that at the time, Mr George Opare Addo had made available five pickup vehicles for some Regional Youth Organisers and promised to get the remainder in due time so they could conduct their business for the political season. We’ll contest Assin North court ruling – Minority
The minority in Parliament says it will contest the ruling of a high court in Cape Coast which annulled the 2020 Assin North Parliamentary results and called for a re-run of the elections. The court also directed the National Democratic Congress’ James Gyakye Quayson from holding himself as MP. The petitioner Mr Michael Ankomah-Nimfa, filed processes at the Cape Coast High Court to annul the declaration of Mr James Gyakye Quayson as the Member of Parliament for the constituency. The NDC candidate polled 17,498 votes in the 2020 general elections to beat the NPP’s Abena Durowaa Mensah’s 14,793. It later emerged that Mr Quayson held dual citizenship contrary to Article 94 (2) (a) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which states: ‘A person shall not be qualified to be a Member of Parliament if he – (a) owes allegiance to a country other than Ghana’. Reacting to the court ruling, the Minority in a press conference on Wednesday, 28 July 2021 said they will appeal the ruling. Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu told the media “He [Quayson] won outright as a citizen, born and bred in that community but for some time had to settle in Canada. He subsequently, as I understand, renounced his citizenship, express so far back in 2019, got his certificate at least before the elections. “We in the minority remain unshaken, we are confident that it is our seat, it’ll remain our seat. Our first option is to use the same legal processes and legal forum and opportunities available within the constitution.” Mr Iddrisu indicated that “we will contest the ruling, the judge erred both in law and in facts. It’s a travesty of justice. What is worrying, we don’t want to believe that the courts of Ghana have been captured and the courts of Ghana have become forums being used surreptitiously to tilt the balance of power. “We are equal, 137-137. What is happening is the courts are now being used to tilt the balance of power and to weaken the time-tested historical notion of checks and balances.” He insisted that “justice must not only be done but must manifestly and undoubtedly be seen to be done. What happened this morning in Cape Coast, we are told that even when the Supreme Court of Ghana directed Hon Quayson and his legal team to go and file appropriate legal motions for the matter to be referred to the Supreme Court, he was denied that. That is repugnant and upfront to his right to a fair trial guaranteed under Article 19 of the 1992 construction.” “Danger begets our democracy with the developments happening,” he added. —Classfm Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Ghanaians are suffering due to Nana Addo’s mismanagement, not Covid – Ato Forson
A Ranking Member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has bemoaned the state of Ghana’s economy which he says has led to extreme suffering among the Ghanaian populace. According to him, the poor state of the economy, which he described as the worst in recent memory, is a result of mismanagement by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government and not the Covid-19 pandemic as some had been misled to believe. Speaking on Monday, July 26, 2021, at an NDC Ranking Members forum dubbed ‘Policy Dialogue on the Economy’ at the UPSA Auditorium in Accra, the Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam said the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government’s unrestrained borrowing as well as the budget deficit is responsible for this. “The main causes of the current hardships are the twin problems of the largest budget deficit (15.2%) in recent history, and a choking debt overhang that threatens the stability of the Ghanaian economy” he stated, adding that “…the hardships arising out of the deficit and debt situation is the direct result of mismanagement of the economy and misplaced populism by this government.” He cautioned that if the government does not pull the brakes on the current situation, the country will experience a decline in capital expenditure even as it spends more on interest servicing. He added that wages of public sector workers may not be increased and government will rather increase taxes, a situation he anticipated will be captured in the upcoming mid-year budget review. As part of his recommendations, Dr. Ato Forson maintained that the next 18 months will be crucial for Ghana, and therefore urged that the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government “must be bold to tell the Ghanaian Public the truth that the economy has been driven into a ditch and will require urgent fiscal measures to pull out of the ditch.” He warned that failure by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government to do as recommended, within the next 18 months, would expose Ghana to a High Risk of Default on its debt service obligations which will plunge the country into much deeper economic crisis. The data-based engagement brought together representatives from civil society, the media, academia, professional groups among others as part of the dialogue on the economy and government policies. —citinewsroom Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. John Dramani Mahama’s speech at the 9th wreath laying ceremony of HE Professor JEA Mills
Ladies and Gentlemen! Good Morning. Today, we recognise not only Professor Mills, but also our Founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and also our former Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, who have since passed away. I invite you to pay a minute’s silence for their souls. May their souls rest in perfect peace. We are all gathered here, at the Asomdwee Park, today – as citizens, family, friends, sympathizers and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – to celebrate the life and legacy of President Professor John Evans Atta Mills. Prof., as we all fondly called him, is our departed hero and inspiration who continues forever to live in our hearts and minds. Nine years ago, even the heavens themselves displayed the ominous signs when the skies, which were previously bright, suddenly darkened as though about to rain. A gripping cold enveloped the whole nation. Yes, it was a Tuesday afternoon. Our nation was in shock when news came through confirming the unprecedented event of the death of our sitting President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills. It is a tragedy we all pray would never befall our nation ever again. Nine years have passed but anytime we celebrate the anniversary of his departure, we are reminded of the values and principles he extolled and lived-by: a Leadership of Service, Compassion, Integrity, Humility, Sacrifice, and Unity. Nine years ago, his family lost a God-fearing, devoted father, brother and husband; our country lost a priceless gem, a true servant leader; Africa lost an exemplary illustrious son, the NDC lost a torchbearer, and I lost not only my superior, but a friend and mentor. Although his Presidency was unexpectedly short-lived, his legacy and record remain unmatched in the annals of our nation’s history. I am honoured to have played a humble part as his Vice President and Head of the Economic Management Team. He was a team leader and it was under his guidance that the NDC administration chalked most of its notable achievements, including the longest period of single digit inflation in the history of Ghana for two years continuously, the highest economic growth record of 14.4%, placing Ghana at the top of the World Bank ease of doing business survey for West Africa, making Ghana the number one preferred destination in West Africa for investors. This was not all. Every sector of our national life, including education and health received massive boosts and growth, particularly through investments in socio-economic infrastructure and human resource development. Yet, being the humble achiever that he was, Prof. in tandem with the tradition of the NDC derived no satisfaction or desire to reel off his unmatched economic statistics in self-praise, when his work was there to speak for him. He was more concerned with seeing to the upliftment of the socio-economic circumstances of the people of Ghana so they could live in dignity and prosperity, irrespective of where they were coming from or belonged. Yes, he was a father for all! Indeed, as a social democratic party founded on modesty and not bragging, it must be obvious to all sincere minds that only the party that achieved that feat knows what it takes and can take the country to those heights again. The leadership of President Mills, together with the hardworking and resourceful team in government, gave our nation a blueprint of excellence- the NDC, having laid a strong socio-economic foundation, would utilize in its next government in service to the people of Ghana and in honour of President Mills. President Mills demonstrated that one could rise to the highest positions in life – Professor, scholar, expert in his field, and President – and still be a humble learner. Power never changed him. He changed the direction of power by giving it back to the people whom he led and saw as key partners towards the realization of an open and transparent government. His ultimate aim was to achieve a better Ghana of shared prosperity for all. Like an open book, he was transparent and saw as important the need to account to the people of Ghana. He respected Ghanaians. Professor Mills was passionately concerned about wastefulness, profligacy and arrogant dissipation of public funds and resources. He didn’t just espouse his principles; he lived by them. His strong abhorrence for corruption energized and encouraged anti-corruption agencies to come out and expose all persons found to have been involved in the canker in every strata of society. He saw anti-corruption campaigners and activists as partners in the fight against corruption rather than enemies of the state. President Mills strongly abhorred politics of insults. He saw politics as a contest of ideas and was constantly concerned about the need for leaders to be proper role models to the younger generation who are keenly watching and may end up emulating the actions of the political class. Unfortunately, he was attacked viciously by opponents even when he was unwell, but the NDC has continued to live by his tolerant nature. It is imperative that we, as members and sympathizers of the NDC, continue to be guided by the values of truth, humility, transparency and accountability that are exemplified in Professor Mills. I lived it, and while some, including from within our party will criticize me for it, I believe that our politics must be a platform and opportunity to ensure total development and a general improvement in the lives of the Ghanaian, and not an opportunity for wickedness, trampling on the rights of your people, the destruction of businesses of perceived political opponents, pushing the parochial interests of your family and friends, etc. It is especially critical for the survival of our nation that the NDC as a social democratic party restores these values and principles that have been lost in our country in order to be distinct from the NPP, and above all, in order that our people can begin to hope again and trust in our institutions once again. In closing, as we are all gathered here in celebration
I have decided to refund all monies paid to me as allowance–First Lady
The Press statement released by the office of the First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has shown her readiness the to refund all allowance received from 2017 to date. Per the public discourse on the recommendation by the presidential committee on emoluments for Article 71 office-holders (January 2017 to December 2020), that first and second ladies be paid salaries under benefits paid to Ghanaian presidents and vice-presidents, the sitting First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, have shown sign of rejecting the said recommendation following the public negative impression created across the country. In the statement released the First Lady made it clear that payment of such allowance existed and was made to previous First Lady Lordina Mahama. Full text: NDC’s ‘March for Justice’ petition to Akufo-Addo
March For Justice Accra Protest. 6th July, 2021. PETITION TO PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO BY THE NATIONAL YOUTH WING OF NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS The framers of the 1992 Constitution were spot on when they made provision in clause 1 of article 1 that “the Sovereignty of Ghana resides in the PEOPLE OF GHANA in whose name and for whose welfare the powers of government are to be exercised in the manner and within the limits laid down in this Constitution.” In the strict adherence to the meaning of this provision, Your Excellency, you took the presidential oath on January 7, 2017, when you were first elected President of the Republic. Although our party, the NDC contested the general election which was subsequently decided in your favour by the Supreme Court of our Republic, you took the same oath on January 7, 2021, to serve another four-year term. The Presidential oath, as we know it, was not and cannot be fanciful words said for purposes of formality. Despite the polarized nature of our country, Ghanaians who voted for you, and indeed, those who voted for your opponents succumbed to our Constitutional arrangements and entrusted their will and aspirations in your hands. The hopes of every Ghanaian, including your political adversaries, were to see you uphold the tenets of our Constitution, sustain the peace you inherited from your predecessor, improve upon the economic wellbeing of Ghanaians, fight corruption ruthlessly, provide decent employment for the youth in particular, and ensure the safety of everybody, amongst other things; needless to say, these were the very teething issues you campaigned on and promised to deliver. Your Excellency, without mincing words, it is heart wrenching to state that your government has so far delivered the antithesis of almost all what you promised Ghanaians. It cannot be gainsaid that if you objectively and sincerely looked back, reflect on the state of the country bequeathed to you and what you have done with it in five years, you have eroded almost all the strides our country have made. If our country was a clock, you have rolled it anti-clockwise. Though our country was riddled with some age long challenges before you took over; issues of corruption, unemployment, nepotism, cronyism and insecurity among other things, have increased unimaginably. You will agree with us that our country needs fixing and there cannot be any good time to fix it than now. The danger, Your Excellency, is that there is no commitment from you and your government that these life threatening challenges facing our country will be, at least, reduced. Instead of teaming up with those who have taken inspiration from your edicts to be citizens and not spectators to fix the country, your government is surprisingly averse to calls asking for the fixing of our beloved country. Those crusading for the country to be fixed have become enemies of your government as they are either being intimidated, harassed or killed. Respectfully Mr President, it is not out of place to point out to you that, though Ghanaians signed a social contract with you to resolve their problems, your government has become an insurmountable challenge that they are struggling to resolve. Objective minds in our nation and those in your own government whispering on corridors have growing apprehension about where you are leading this dear country of ours. The leadership you have provided so far is one of “let’s finish everything today because there is no tomorrow.” There is no hope for the youth under your stewardship. The very people you promised to protect are the ones being beaten and/or killed daily by thugs recruited into our Security Services, those you promised jobs have either been laid off, lost their investments or have not been employed at all. You have failed to build a just society. Today, more than ever in the history of the construction of our State, access to the few opportunities is solely based on possession of an NPP party card. Those you promised infrastructural development have either have what your predecessor started abandoned by you or not seen any infrastructure at all. Perhaps, the best thing about your government is how far your family members and cronies are feeding on the national kitty to the chagrin of all of us. The case of students, nurses, teachers, tailors, carpenters, Okada riders, trotro drivers, doctors, Masons, lawyers, traders, civil servants, farmers, to the last man on the street, has been of agony, pain and sorrow. There is simply no hope in sight. In the world all over, governments are elected to work for people and not otherwise. Your Excellency, your government is not working for the generality of Ghanaians but a select few, mainly family members and cronies. With each passing day, you and your government manifest more examples of insensitivity to the cries of Ghanaians. The latest being your decision to pay your wife Rebecca and Samira Bawumia salaries equivalent to Cabinet Ministers at a time like this. Clearly, you have lost it. The Country our forefathers labored at the peril of their lives to build for us cannot be gambled with and treated this way. Without sounding exaggerative, where you have led the country to, points to a direction that we urgently need liberation from the ills of state powers which must start from the seat of government; we are not lost at all of the powers allocated to the executive arm of our government and it’s authority to change things for the better. The ills of your government are just too many to mention but of course you cannot be bothered. You fulfilled a long held ambition to be President and that is what appears to matter to you most. Though it sounds needless to remind you of your pledge and campaign messages to the good people of Ghana, it is worthy to make the following demands: 1. Immediately, implement recommendations of the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry Report forthwith. In particular, pay compensations to all victims
‘March for justice’ protesters petition presidency, parliament
The youth of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who protested today, Tuesday, July 6, 2021, over increasing insecurity in the country, presented a petition to the presidency and parliament after their march across some principal streets of Accra. Dubbed ‘March for Justice’, the NDC marchers noted that the demonstration is meant to remind President Akufo-Addo of his responsibilities toward the people of Ghana, especially in the area of public safety and security. The National Youth Organiser of the party, George Opare Addo, led the demonstrators to present the petition at the seat of government. The Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of operations, Mr Emmanuel Bossman, received the petition on behalf of President Nana Akufo-Addo. The demonstrators also presented a copy of the petition to parliament. A deputy National Youth Organiser, Ruth Dela Seddoh, made the presentation to parliament, which was received by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu. The thousands of demonstrators were clad in red with inscriptions on placards some of which described President Akufo-Addo as a dictator. The demonstration is a result of the incessant police and military attacks on civilians with the latest being the shooting of two civilians by soldiers at Ejura during a protest over the murder of their colleague known as Kaaka, a social media activist. We don’t want a war-promoting country without justice – Asiedu Nketia
The General Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has said he agrees with the youth of the country for demonstrating against the festering insecurity and injustice in the country “although I’m old”. “I think it is time for you to arise and hold the older generation accountable because we will soon hand it over to you and you need to ensure that we don’t hand over a country with no resources, a country that has had all its resources sold by people to look after their families”, he charged the youth during Tuesday’s march for justice. “Ensure that you are not handed a country with an unstable democracy, a country without justice, or a country that promotes war because we can’t look to the security agencies to protect us”, he urged, adding: “I am very happy you are awake and staging this demonstration.” In a petition to the presidency, the marchers said persons crusading for Ghana to be fixed have become enemies of the Akufo-Addo-led government, as they are either being intimidated, harassed or killed. According to the NDC, there is no hope for the Ghanaian youth under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership. The party said the very people the president promised to protect are the ones being beaten and/or killed daily by thugs recruited into the security services adding that those he promised jobs have either been laid off, lost their investments or have not been employed at all. The petition, signed by George Opare Addo, National Youth Organiser of the NDC, noted that today, more than ever in the history of the country, access to the few opportunities is solely based on possession of an NPP party card. The NDC stated that the best thing about Akufo-Addo’s government is how far his family members and cronies are feeding on the national kitty to the chagrin of the rest of the population. “The danger, Your Excellency, is that there is no commitment from you and your government that these life-threatening challenges facing our country will be, at least, reduced. Instead of teaming up with those who have taken inspiration from your edicts to be citizens and not spectators to fix the country, your government is surprisingly averse to calls asking for the fixing of our beloved country. Those crusading for the country to be fixed have become enemies of your government as they are either being intimidated, harassed or killed,” the petition said. It further noted that although the country was riddled with some age-long challenges issues of corruption, unemployment, nepotism, cronyism and insecurity among other things, have increased unimaginably. The NDC, therefore, said there cannot be any good time to fix it than now. Read the full petition below: March For Justice Accra Protest. 6th July, 2021. Ejura killings: I’ve not visited victims, It’s an old video – Mahama
Former President John Mahama has said he has not visited victims of the shootings at Ejura in the Ashanti Region. His comment follows a video circulating on social media of his purported visit to injured persons in a hospital. The former President indicated that the purported visit is an old one which has no link to the current disturbance in Ejura. Mr Mahama earlier in the week urged President Akufo-Addo to de-escalate the issue at Ejura. “I urgently call on President Nana Akufo-Addo to initiate an immediate de-escalation of the situation in Ejura”, he stated. In a statement issued on Tuesday, 29 June 2021, the former president said: “There must be a very thorough investigation of both the murder of the youth activist and the security rules of engagement, which resulted in the shooting to death of the two others.” Mahama added “I add my voice to calls for calm following the shooting to death of two persons and the injury to many in Ejura today”. “I have just seen a video of the firing of live ammunition into a crowd by persons wearing military attire, after the burial of the murdered youth activist. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the Ejura community.” Two protesters were killed by combined police and military team who shot into an angry youth who were protesting a day after the mob killing of local social media activist Ibrahim ‘Kaaka’ Mohammed. Four other protesters also got injured in the clash between the demonstrators and the security personnel.
