John Mahama welcome Prez. Akufo-Addo IMF move say is belated

I welcome President Akufo-Addo’s decision to formally engage the IMF with the view to entering into a programme under the Fund. Though belated, it should mark an important step towards addressing the dire economic situation, which has left Ghanaians wallowing under intense suffering and hardships. Beyond the announcement of engagement with the IMF, a comprehensive home-grown programme should be fashioned out and presented to the Fund for support. It is imperative that a team of skilled and competent negotiators is put together to obtain the best set of measures with the Fund. The Finance Minister who has supervised the disastrous collapse of the economy cannot and should not be part of the team of negotiators. He has lost credibility and the trust and confidence of stakeholders in our economy. President Akufo-Addo must take a bold decision to replace his finance minister immediately with a more assured and competent person who is willing and able to work tirelessly to turn our almost hopeless situation around. In addition, given his obvious failures, the Vice President must be relieved of his responsibility as Chair of the Economic Management Team to enable the President to reconstitute the team. We must draw useful lessons from this episode and avoid cheap politicking with the economy; that can only yield the disastrous outcomes that have brought us here. Source: apexnewsgh.com

The skills, competencies, and ability to provide the leadership and manage the economy–Amb Boniface Gambila

The Ghana Ambassador to Burkina Faso His Excellency Boniface Gambila has stressed, that in today’s Ghana the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has the skills, competencies, and ability to provide the leadership and manage the economy. Responding to the cry of Ghanaians with regards to hardship and high cost of living coupled with the slogan BREAK THE 8, Amb. Gambila said: “People shouldn’t be blackmailing that we can’t break the 8, that slogan breaking the 8 is saying that, if we continue to be voting in NPP for only 8 years, then we say that things are hard, let’s vote NDC for another term. Momentarily, people feel the pitch and they think that those who couldn’t do it can do it. And that is why I began by saying, if we change a government today, it will be the same. they will come and battle with it”. “But if you look through, the ability to provide the leadership and manage the economy even to the level that it is today is in NPP. The skills, the competencies are in the NPP. Because with all the global comparisons, Ghana is still standing tall, Ghana has been seen to perform well in the means of all these difficulties”. Gov’t has been transparent with COVID-19 expenditure – Ofori-Atta

Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta has denied claims that government has not been transparent with its COVID-19 expenditure. Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, the Minister said all programmed, mobilized and utilized funds pertaining to the coronavirus pandemic have been dully reported in line with government’s commitment to accountability and transparency. His presentation comes on the back of the Minority’s demand for an audit into all COVID-19 related expenses over discrepancies in government’s expenditure data. However, responding to questions, the Mr. Ofori-Atta said government is transparent on its expenditure items and will continue to operate an open-door policy and welcomes any opportunity to engage in the national interest. “Mr. Speaker, at this juncture, I wish to dispel the notion that there have been inconsistencies in government data on COVID-19. His Excellency the President intimated during that State of the Nation Address on 30th March, 2022, that we had mobilized about Gh¢17.7 billion since 2020 to fight the pandemic. “We have subsequently reconciled the data and I can report that as of end-May, 2022, we have mobilized Gh¢18.19 billion to mitigate the effect of the pandemic. Again, when His Excellency the Vice President indicated on 7th April, 2022 at the National TESCON Conference that Government had spent Gh¢8.1 billion on Covid-19, it was within the context of expenditures for 2020 as I have already indicated,” the Minister said. This the Minister explained that out of the Gh¢18.19 billion expended to mitigate the effect of the pandemic, GH¢1,550 million was disbursed under the Support to Households Programme, GH¢1,049 million was allocated to health response-supplies equipment and relief for health workers, GH¢600 million was released to begin the construction across the country and a further GH¢763.92 million has been released to continue the construction of the 111 district hospitals. He said government also programmed a total amount of GH¢875 million for security operations, evacuation of Ghanaians stranded abroad and coordination of MMDAs’ sanitation and disinfection exercises. Additionally, he said in line with measures to stabilize the economy after the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, government implemented programmes to revitalize the economy and protect jobs. This includes the GH¢600 million utilized under Coronavirus Alleviation Programme Business Support Scheme (CAPBuSS) by the NBSSI now the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA). With regards to vaccine procurement, the Minister indicated that GH¢929.30 million was allocated. A total amount of GH¢775.82 million was released for the purchase of Sputnik V, the Janssen COV SARS 2 COVID Vaccines and the Emergency deployment of vaccines in schools among other key government’s disbursement. —Starrfm

GHS175m Nestlé plant opened by President Akufo-Addo

On Wednesday, 8th June 2022, I commissioned the GH¢175.4 million state-of-the-art plant of Nestlé Ghana, located in Tema, which is manufacturing infant cereals for the domestic market, as well as for markets in other countries in Central and West Africa. This investment by a major multinational company does not only underscore the confidence that Nestlé and its shareholders have in the Ghanaian economy, but it is also a signal to the global business community that the Ghanaian economy is recovering to its pre-COVID-19 levels. I am not one to ever pontificate on who qualifies to make it to Heaven or Hell–Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disassociated himself from the claim that he ever said President Akufo-Addo will not make it to heaven because he is constructing a national cathedral. Mr. Ablakwa described those allegations as “malicious and ridiculous”. Read his full statement: Disclaimer: Kindly ignore the pathetically malicious and ridiculous claim that I have said President Akufo-Addo won’t make it to Heaven because he’s constructing a national cathedral. All those who have cared to listen to me on the matter in issue will attest to the fact that I have been consistent about the blatant constitutional violations, a flagrant breach of procurement laws and misplaced priorities at this time of excruciating economic crisis — those have been my paramount focus as MP, conscious of my constitutional mandate. As Christians, the Biblical injunction is not to judge others, and to work out our own salvation; I am not one to ever pontificate on who qualifies to make it to Heaven or Hell. It is most blasphemous for mischievous elements to portray me as the gatekeeper in Heaven or the custodian of the Book of Life for that matter. The juvenile attempts to malign the messenger instead of responding to the germane issues which are of enormous public interest cannot provide a cover for the egregious and ungodly legal violations that have been occasioned with impunity under the guise of fulfilling the President’s personal pledge to the Almighty. NDC commends the Methodist Church Ghana for….

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the Methodist Church Ghana for distancing themselves from what they described as an unprovoked attack launched on His Excellency John Dramani Mahama by one of their own the Rt. Rev. Stephen R. Bosomtwe Ayensu, a past Methodist Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese. Read the full statement below: PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: 10th May, 2022 NDC COMMENDS THE METHODIST CHURCH GHANA. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has become aware of an official Press Release issued by the Methodist Church Ghana in which the church has distanced itself from the conduct of one of its own, the Rt. Rev. Stephen R. Bosomtwe Ayensu, a past Methodist Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese. It would be recalled that only a few days ago, the Rt. Rev. Stephen R. Bosomtwe Ayensu, launched an unprovoked attack on His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, over his recent pledge to ensure the immediate repeal of the unpopular E-levy law when the NDC assumes the reins of Government. This latest attack forms part of a litany of vitriolic attacks launched by the same man against the National Democratic Congress and leading figures and functionaries of the party. One of such attacks for instance was his unfounded claim that Former President Mahama and the NDC would cancel the Free Senior High School policy in the event the party won the 2020 General Election. We wish to state that at no point did the party or its leadership assume that the church lent its support or endorsement whatsoever to the regrettable conduct of the Rt. Rev. Bosomtwe Ayensu who often took advantage of the noble platform offered him by the church to engage in scurrilous attacks on leading figures of the NDC as though he was on a political campaign platform. The NDC wishes to reaffirm its cordial working relationship with the Methodist Church of Ghana which has been a worthy partner in our democratic and developmental journey as a nation. Indeed, several leaders of the NDC have been and are still devout members of the Methodist Church. Notably, President John Evans Atta Mills and Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, both of blessed memory were members of the Methodist Church in good standing until their passing. Similarly, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang who is the immediate-past Running Mate to the Flagbearer of the NDC in the 2020 General Election is also a member of the Methodist Church. The party hereby assures the Methodist Church that we shall continue to hold the church in high esteem as a strong pillar of development in the areas of education, health, among others in our dear country, as we have trusted the church to remain a non-aligned stakeholder, a neutral arbiter and the moral compass of our society. Supreme Court Chases NDC MPs – Over Double Salary

Supreme Court Chases NDC MPs – Over Double Salary

THE SUPREME Court has ordered that all double salary Members of Parliament (MPs) and ministers should be served by way of substituted service after swerving service of the writ of summons issued against them. Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, filed a suit against the former ministers including Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, challenging the payment of their salaries to them between 2009 and 2016 when they doubled as MPs and ministers or deputy ministers. The court gave the order after the lawyer for Abronye DC, Seth Gyapong Oware, informed the court that the affected MPs and former government appointees are evading service of court processes. Subsequently, the court directed that the processes should be posted on the notice boards of Parliament, Supreme Court and the Law Court Complex. It also directed further publication in the Daily Graphic and DAILY GUIDE newspapers within 14 days. The defendants are Haruna Iddrisu, Alhassan Azong, Fifi Fiave Kwetey, Eric Opoku, Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Mark Owen Woyongo, Comfort Doyoe, Cudjoe Ghansah and Aquinas Tawiah Quansah. The rest are the Controller and Accountant General and the Attorney General. It is the case of Abronye DC that the affected MPs and former government appointees who received double salaries as MPs and ministers or deputy ministers is inconsistent with the constitution. He contends that per Article 98 of the  Constitution, the practice is unconstitutional, null and void. He is, therefore, praying the Supreme Court to declare the payment as a violation of the constitution and an order to compel the MPs to refund the double salaries paid to them. Abronye wants the Supreme Court to compel the former ministers/deputy ministers who served under the Mills-Mahama administrations, who were also elected MPs between 2009 and 2016, to pay back to the Republic, all double salaries received within the period. The presiding judge, Justice Clemence Honyenuga, while granting the application, said “good and substantial reasons have been urged for the grant of the application.” —Daily Guide
