President Akufo-Addo, has reiterated the need for all Ghanaians to get involved in the 2021 National Population and Housing Census. President Akufo-Addo insists the involvement of all Ghanaians will help the government in decision-making. He therefore charged opinion leaders in various communities to rally their people to participate in the exercise. President Akufo-Addo was speaking at an event in Accra. “With the imminent commencement of the 2021 Population and Housing Census by the Ghana Statistical Service on Sunday, June 27, 2021, I urge everyone here to help ensure a successful event. We hope to use the reliable data obtained to plan and develop mother Ghana more effectively.” Already, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has assured Ghanaians that there will be an inclusive exercise where every tribe or ethnic group in Ghana will be captured without discrimination, no matter the size of their numbers. Government Statistician, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, who made this comment while interacting with some journalists on Friday, June 4, 2021, said even though some tribes have started expressing concerns for not seeing their tribe as arranged in the main tribe categories, that does not mean that they have been overlooked or discriminated against. “The census will count everyone who will spend the 27th June in Ghana irrespective of ethnic group be it Fulani, or any other ethnic group. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the Ghana Vice President, on his Facebook tribute to the late Latif Solomon Yenah has said his services and hard work for the party, particularly for the youth wing will be remembered for long. Latif Solomon died on Friday, May 14, 2021, in Tamale after battling with what many described as undisclosed health conditions. Latif Solomon has later flown out abroad for further medical treatment where he spent some months and later returned in March 2021. However, according to the Islamic burial, Latif Solomon was laid to rest in his home town Bongo on Saturday, May 15, 2021. NPP Upper East Regional Youth Organizer Latif Solomon is dead
Members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) across the Upper East Region have seen themselves in a melancholic mood after the news broke out that Latif Solomon Yenah their Regional Party Youth Organizer has passed on. Before now, Mr. Latif has been very instrumental in his job as a regional youth organizer by involving party youth especially in some of the government flagship programmes. At a time, the name Latif Solomon was taken over as ‘COMMANDER ONE’ due to his activeness in addressing issues to the party youth. However, after a while during the later part of Akufo-Addo’s first administration, Latif Solomon’s health condition changed from bad to worst and due to his love for his party, he was still seen around the various campaign platforms in Chaina/Paga Constituency and Bolgatanga. A retired educationist Robert Ajane has said, ‘he would never have thought at any moment that there was a need to have any licensure examination for teachers’. The first-ever teacher licensure examination in Ghana was held from September 10 to 12, 2018 in colleges of education throughout the country. Even though since its introduction in 2018, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has a different view on the said license examination. In 2020, former President John Mahama in one of his platforms made a pronouncement that his government will abolish the licensure examination for teachers if he is elected as President in the 2020 polls. “I will cancel licensure exams for teachers,” he said, explaining that what was needed was an improvement in the quality of teaching and examinations at the Colleges of Education. Former President Mahama stressed. Meanwhile, Mr. Ajane who spoke One-on-One with Apexnewsgh-Tv, said he would never have thought at any moment that there was a need to have any licensure examination for teachers in the country. “If it was at the critical time when I was actively teaching, I would never have thought at any moment that there was a need to have any licensure examination and my reasons are as follows; at that time, we have two types of teachers, the professional and non-professional and even if you had to add the third one the ‘pupil teacher’ who even just walked in and because there was no room. Some years back, there was a pupil-teacher training center where they will teach them and then asked them to go and teach. “Now the professional teacher is the teacher who after the middle school or the SS went into a teacher training college and at the teacher training college, he or she was taught the academic and the methodology. How to teach and teaching practice and I think, that was the licensures for him or her. “If you still have the degrees, you will still be called an unprofessional teacher” “You haven’t trained the people and you are saying come and sit for a licensing exam for what syllabus? I found that rather unfortunate. But if this is the progression, I said let’s caution it. However, Mr. Ajane blamed teachers for some of the predicaments they are going through. They will say pupil-teacher and I said, do we have pupil police, pupil army men, pupil nurse, pupil what? We have helped to water down our teaching and even as we talk, there still pupil teachers there. What are those people recommending licensure examination saying about these people? President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will serve Parliament with a list of persons to be vetted as deputy ministers today, pro-government news portal Asaase.com reports. The reports states that in line with the dictates of the constitution President Akufo-Addo will release the list of deputy ministers with some interesting names featuring. It is indicated in the report that the Finance Ministry will have three deputy ministers while Oppong Nkrumah will have two deputies. Charles Adu-Boahen and Abena Osei Asare who served as deputy ministers in the first term of the Akufo-Addo administration will be joined by another person with Kwaku Kwarteng swapping his role as deputy for chairman of parliament’ Finance Committee. The deputy communications director at the Office of the President, Fatimatu Abubakar will leave the seat of government to join Oppong Nkrumah as one of two deputies. Andrew Egyapa Mercer the MP for Sekondi will become one of three deputies to Matthew Opoku Prempeh at the Energy Ministry. The Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice will have two deputies with Diana Asonaba Dapaah tipped to be one of them. She is a lawyer who has been called to the Ghana and New York bars. Dumsor is a pure political term–Johnson Asiedu Nketia
Mr. Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress has described Dumsor as a pure political term, and stressing that the Akufo-Addo government cannot defer to engineers to explain the political term it inherited during opposition. Over some period now, the country has seen a continuous power outage, which the Energy Minister, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has attributed to ongoing system upgrades. Dr Prempeh, who recently announced that there would be systematic power outages in May, also refuted claims that dumsor was back during a recent tour of some ongoing upgrade projects in Accra. “We should all be truthful in our communication. In 2016, the whole country, they gave us periods that we were off and on. In 2016, the government of the day told us that it was a generation problem. In 2016, even the opposition talked about the government not having money to buy fuel. This is not a generation problem, this is not about fuel, so, how could it be dumsor?” “Dumsor is planned and a timetable is rolled out and it affected the whole country for four years. Is that what we are seeing? No”, he asserted, insisting: “Some of the systems, because of the challenges, the reason the system upgrades are being done is what we are feeling”. “So, we have to bear with the contractors to finish in time so that we can enjoy the improvement we so desire”, he pleaded. “Is it the dumsor that you have known and come to live with that is happening in the country?” he questioned “We have systems where lines are flickering, voltages are low and, sometimes, like it happened over the weekend, a line is down because a conductor has broken. And that is exactly why we are here today – the system upgrade that is ongoing – and, so, the challenges are what we are dealing with and all I can say is to plead with Ghanaians to be forbearing and we’ll coming out of the problem”, he said. “Some of these claims need not be responded to in the sense that in the light of the obvious fact, this was not started today, this project has been ongoing for some time, the project the engineer just told you about, so, I can simply say it is not true”. “Dumsor is not an engineering term, it’s a political term, so, if in 2016, we were not interested in listening to the causes of the dumsor, why should we be listening to the causes of the dumsor from the engineering standpoint now”. “At that time, even when we were explaining that: ‘Look, part of the problem has to do with generation, part of the problem has to do with the gas that was not flowing from Nigerian and all that, they said it was all incompetence. So, the politician should not go and hide”, he noted. “They should come and explain their own term dumsor and the explanation they gave was that, dumsor means light going on, light coming off and, so, now they cannot call the engineers who did not study dumsor in any of their textbooks, to come and explain to us what dumsor means”.
