New anti-money laundering law awaits President’s assent
President, Nana Akufo-Addo will soon assent into law the Anti-money Laundering Bill, 2020 following its passage last week Thursday by Parliament. The law is expected to curb illicit financial inflows, deal with various financial malfeasance as well as enabling Ghana to comply with international best practices once it is fully operational next year. In effect, people with unexplained wealth, be it in a form of cash, properties among others shall be able to explain the source of their wealth, else they will be charged with money laundering. An effective money laundering regime is also expected to boost business activities. Indeed, various financial institutions attach great importance to reputation because of brand reputation “As the market volumes are enormous, brand values are also very high. So they have a lot to lose in a potential disaster. Implementing money laundering regulations can increase brand awareness to enable consumers see the business as safe”. It will be recalled that Ghana and other African countries were blacklisted by the European Union (EU) over money-laundering, putting the country’s financial transactions under greater scrutiny. Recently, the African Union Commission through the Department of Economic Affairs and various partners including EU), the German Federal Ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ) and GIZ launched a Multi-Donor Action to add to the existing mechanisms to stem the illicit outflows. Kotoko bounce back to victory against Dreams FC
Asante Kotoko beat Dreams 1-0 to win their first match following the dismissal of coach Maxwell Konadu. The Porcupine Warriors, under the guidance of interim coach Johnson Smith, produced an improved performance to secure the victory at the Theatre of Dreams in Dawu. NDC’s Northern Chairman’s 413-acre rice farm set ablaze a day before party’s anti-EC demo
A 413-are rice farm belonging to the Northern Regional Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ibrahim Mobila, has allegedly, been set ablaze by arsonists in a farming community at North East Gonja District of the Savanna Region. The incident preceded the party’s demonstration in the region on Wednesday, against the Electoral Commission’s declared results in the recently-held general elections. The locals managed to fend off the fire at some point. The blaze consumed some 320 acres of the farm. The fire was confined to Alhaji Mobila’s farm. He told the media that some 85% of the farm was decimated before some locals in a village called Kujere mobilised themselves in communal labour fashion to quench the flames. Alhaji Mobila said rather than reporting the arsonist to the police, he would leave judgment to God. “That person has mentioned to me before when we were planting, that no one has been able to farm but I have come to do it.” “I have left the person to God, who is the IGP in the world, I don’t mean police IGP…I am reporting the person to God to punish him, his mother and brothers,” he said. He expressed gratitude to the community for coming to his aid. “The village people have done very well, about 85% got burnt but at least I have about 15%, which I can recover for next year,” he added. I knocked 8 times on all 1,647 houses in my constituency for votes – Napo
Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South Constituency, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed how much work he had to put in to secure his seat in the august house. Speaking on Metro TV’s ‘Good Evening Ghana’, he sought to clear the perception that he won the contest comfortably because his area is considerably a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mr. Opoku Prempeh who is also the Education Minister, won massively with 27,923 votes as against his contender, Abubakar Sulemana, who polled some 5,292 votes on the ticket on the National Democratic Congress (NDC). A question posed to him by Host, Paul Adom Otchere about how easy it was to retain his seat got the MP who is usually known as Napo, detailing some tactics he had to deploy to win. “That is what I want you to take out of your mind, quick and fast. It is not automatic that I am there, it is hard work. Do you know that this election, we banged on the door of every house, there are 1,647 houses in my constituency and we banged on every house 8 times. You don’t have to take people for granted, when the rulers of the air have set an agenda against my government, you have to go in all humility to explain. “Don’t think that the free SHS should be automatic. Free SHS, didn’t NDC people take their children to school? And didn’t they still vote for the NDC? So if you want the votes, you will have to make sure the person understands,” he added Citing how other colleagues in similar stronghold areas lost their seats to their opponents because of other factors, Mr Opoku Prempeh maintained the need for every MP to be consistent and forceful. “Have you heard the phrase all politics is local. So you can never pinpoint what made me win and translate it to another constituency that made an MP like mine lose. One of the finest gentlemen in this parliament was the Ledzokuku MP, Okoe Boye, one of the serious advocates for his constituents but he lost, so you can’t say Manhyia. “There were parts of Manhyia I could not go and knock on the doors till they started doing the roads. And when they started doing the roads, the people were very grateful, they started cooking for the people doing the roads. Kumasi NDC demonstration: One hospitalized, 2 others arrested over violations
One person is said to be injured after police splashed hot water on him during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) protest in the Ashanti Region against the outcome of the 2020 general elections. The leadership of the NDC and over 1000 supporters hit the principal streets of Kumasi to register their displeasure against the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensa. The supporters despite the peaceful demonstration blocked roads and burnt tyres creating congestion and vehicular traffic in parts of the garden city. Police who tried putting out the fire with their water cannons spilt some on some supporters of the NDC one of whom got injured. The victim was rushed to Manhyia Government Hospital for treatment. The Ashanti Regional Organizer of the NDC Isham Alhassan speaking in an interview with Pure FM’s Osei Kwadwo monitored by MyNewsGh.com revealed that 2 supporters were arrested by the police during the protest. According to Isham Alhassan, the leadership of the NDC will secure bail for those who were arrested though he was unable to give reasons for their arrest “The demonstration was peaceful but the supporters were plenty and we couldn’t control them. Burning of tyres during a demonstration is normal and it doesn’t take away the peace of our demonstration,” Isham said. NDC supporters clash with Manhyia District Police, vandalise police car
Some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have stormed the Manhyia District Police Command after alleging the police arrested one of their colleagues. The supporters pelted stones at the police officers, injuring scores while they damaged a vehicle belonging to police personnel. The demonstrators who are protesting against the Electoral Commission‘s declaration of the presidential results for the New Patriotic Party, initially started their peaceful protest at the Kumasi Jubilee Park until things got tense and there were clashes with the police. According to CitiNews, the protesters burned car tires and chanted ‘No Mahama, No Peace’, to reiterate the NDC’s stance that they will reject the results till audits are done. Even though the police told them no arrests have been made from their end, the NDC Ashanti Regional Organizer, Isham Alhassan is alleging that two of their members have been arrested. The Manhyia Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Charles Appiah said “it is completely false. They were coming to demand that person’s release. We explained to them that nobody was arrested. The demonstrators would not agree and they started throwing stones.” “They threw stones and some of the police were hurt and a vehicle was damaged.” Two people have been arrested while one injured is currently receiving treatment. NDC to contest 5 parliamentary results in court
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has hinted that it will in the next few weeks use legitimate means to contest the parliamentary results of five constituencies. According to the party, results for Techiman South, Sefwi Wiawso, Zabzugu, Tarkwa Nsuem and Essikado Ketan were illegally declared in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, a member of the NDC legal team, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed noted that some anomalies have been detected in the various constituencies, therefore, will use the judiciary to overturn the results. “We have not still accepted the final result of Techiman South because we insist that there was no collation at Techiman South and for that matter declaration that was done was not legal.” “We are also contesting Zabzugu, where a secret declaration was done by the EC at a location that the NDC did not have its people,” he explained. He then added, “Sefwi Wiawso, Tarkwa Nsuaem and Essikado Ketan are all seats we are going to contest.” This comes after the outstanding parliamentary seat was finally collated and declared in favour of the NDC. For Mr Mohammed Ahmed, although the NDC has now attained 137 seats, per their pink sheets at the five indicated constituencies, they should have won those seats too. Thus, they will employ legal measures and challenge the outcome declared by the Electoral Commission. On his part, the MP for the Okere constituency, Dan Botwe said the New Patriotic Party will also contest the parliamentary results of the Banda and Savelugu constituencies.
