The Regional Fire Officer at the Upper East Regional Office of the Ghana National Fire Service, George Asante Wiafe has bemoaned the difficulty in accessing the various markets across the country accounting for the huge loss of properties and livelihood in event of a fire outbreak. Speaking to Apexnewsgh.com, he expressed concern over the number of market fire incidence in the last few months, assuring that Fire Service is battle-ready to fight any fire incidence and advised the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to consult the service for their input when putting up the market. On February 14 this year, a fire ravaged the Dagomba line Kumasi displacing 200 head potters; around July 22, Juaben Serwaa Koforidua market fire burnt shops in the Eastern Region; on August 6 fire gutted another market in Tarkwa in the Western Region; on September 10, the Dome Market in Accra caught fire destroying a number of shops; on November 18, the Odorna Market fire destroyed over 500 shops affecting over 3000 traders, few days later around November 15 three shops in Koforidua caught fire; then on December 16, Kantamanto fire outbreak destroyed over one thousand shops in Accra and days later on December 20, the Kaneshie Market also caught fire destroying nine shops; more than 50 persons were displaced after a fire swept through wooden structure at a slum in the Asokore Mampong Municipality in the Ashanti Region. Apart from the Market fires, public institutions including the fire accident at GCB on November 28 as well as the Ghana Revenue Authority office at Circle. Many have raised a question about how this fire happens at dawn weekend or when nobody is around with other raising suspicion of arson. However, Mr Asante Wiafe noted that illegal connection, use of inferior quality electrical gadgets, and exposed electrical wire can contribute to the fire incidence. Statistics from the Upper East Regional Office of the Ghana National fire service has revealed that the region has recorded as six bush fires incidence from October this to date as against eight cases recorded in December last year representing a 25% decline. Meanwhile, the total number of fire emergencies recorded from January to November this year is three hundred and thirty-seven, 337 including 135 domestic fire emergencies; 28 bush fires, 43 commercial fires, 36 vehicular fires, 21 electrical fires six crown fires ( a forest fire that spreads from treetops to treetops); 9 institutional fires; 2 road traffic collision; 55 rescue and two false alarms. For the Municipal and Districts breakdown, the Bolgatanga Municipal recorded a total of 83 fire emergencies with 32 domestic fires, 22 commercial fires; 14 vehicular fires; 5 electrical fires; one accident fire; two crown fires; one institutional fire, and six rescues. The Bawku Municipal recorded 33 fires comprising 19 domestic fires; two commercial fires; two vehicular fires; two institutional fires six rescues and two false alarms while the Kassena Nankana Municipal recorded 35 fire emergencies including 22 domestic fires; one bush fire; two commercial fires; six vehicular fires, one electrical fire; two crown fires; one institution. Bawku West had 18; Bongo 7; Builsa North 14; Talensi 14; Tempane 13; Paga 64 with 41 of them being rescues; Builsa South 7; Chiana District office 12; BOST one; Bolgatanga East 21; Pusiga District 11; and Nabdam four. Speaking in an interview the Upper East Regional fire officer, George Asante Wiafe, cautioned herdsmen, farmers, and smokers to desist from acts that can spark bush fire during this harmattan. George Asante Wiafe, cautioned the public against engaging the services of uncertified electricians to fire their homes, adding that they can always contact the Electricity Company of Ghana and VRA to provide them with certified electricians to do their bid for safety. He also charged the public to always use quality electrical materials noting that the counterfeit ones may appear cheap, but will end up causing harm since they are death traps. Mr. Wiafe added that some of the counterfeit products are such that even when they are switched off they still function. The region fire officer also advised the general public to desist from loading a lot of gadgets on our extension cords since that exerts a lot of pressure on them, stressing that a gadget like a fridge or a freezer should be solely connected to an extension cord without including additional gadgets. The fire officer added that a heater should be directly connected to a switch and not a cord. Mr. Wiafe also advised the general public to always have their cylinders checked by the attendants anytime they go to the gas plants to fill their cylinders, adding that the practice of placing blocks on their cylinders as a way of blocking leakages should cease. Mr. Wiafe also admonished the public against switching on cookers before lighting up matches, explaining that this was a dangerous practice as the leaked gas would form layers in the air and consequently explode when the match is lighted. He also cautioned the public to always separate the cooker from the cylinder with a long tube, stressing that the cylinder should be outside as it is always supposed to be placed at places where there is ventilation. Mahama Lost; Throw Out NDC Petition – Akua Donkor Petitions Supreme Court
The 2020 presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, has petitioned the Supreme Court to reject a yet-to-be-filed petition by the biggest opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), against the results of the recently-held presidential and parliamentary elections. According to her, the Electoral Commission did “a good job” contrary to the claims of the NDC and former President John Mahama, who intimated today, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 via Facebook that the NDC will continue with its street protests against the election results despite a decision taken by the party to seek redress in court. UER: Bawku Naba Calls On Indigenes To Study Kusaal Language
The Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, Zug-Raan, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, says the peace in the area can only be sustained under mutual understanding and co-existence. In a speech read on his behalf, at the 33rd annual Samanpiid festival of the chiefs and people of the area, the Paramount Chief commended the key actors in the peacebuilding process, “These include the government that initiated the formation of the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, the Municipal and District Assemblies in Kusaug, the security personnel and civil society groups including the Belim Wusa Development Agency (BEWDA). He also thanked Star-Ghana for its support. He said all the stakeholders played various roles to reinforce the peace efforts before, during, and after the just ended Presidential and Parliamentary elections to the surprise of skeptics about the fragile peace in Bawku. He said the elections ended well and thanked the people for taking part in the process in a peaceful manner, adding “The existence of many political parties does not mean we should divide and destroy our unity. Paul Adom-Otchere makes predictions on NDC’s election petition
The National Democratic Congress is expected to file a suit at the Supreme Court today, December 30, 2020, over the outcome of the 2020 Presidential polls. This is after the National Executive Council of the party gave its approval for the party to challenge the result announced and gazetted by Electoral Commission. However, Article 64(1) of the Constitution provides that “the validity of the election of the President may be challenged only by a citizen of Ghana who may present a petition for the purpose to the Supreme Court within twenty-one days after the declaration of the result of the election in respect of which the petition is presented”. This article as interpreted by the Supreme Court in the Election Manual “envisages that a petition, challenging the validity of the election of the president, may be commenced by the person who had been declared by the electoral commission as the losing presidential candidate. In other words, the election may be challenged only by the person who alleges that he was the winner at the election”. Paul Adom-Otchere, the host of Good Evening Ghana has deduced this to mean that only John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress can petition the Supreme Court over the result. If that be the case, the NDC as party will unlike the 2012 Election petition be left out of the proceedings with the former president expected to face cross-examination. Adom-Otchere is, however, not sure John Mahama and the NDC will allow that to happen and thus will challenge the Supreme Court’s interpretation of Article 64(1). In the event that the NDC succeeds in their bid to have the party and other officials join the petition, Adom Otchere predicts that General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu will be the second and third petitioners respectively. He does not expect Mahama, the first petitioner to avail himself for interrogation just as Nana Akufo-Addo did in 2016. “In the last presidential election petition, three people filed as the petitioners. Nana Akufo-Addo as the first petitioner, Bawumia as the second and Jake Obetsebi Lamptey as the third. But now the Supreme Court is saying that per their understanding of Article 64(1), only John Dramani Mahama can file the petition because it is only him who is alleging that he is the winner of the elections. I think the NDC are going to make a case that Article 64(1) says a citizen of Ghana and they are going to challenge the conclusions of the Supreme Court”, he said. “If Mahama does not want to do it, Johnson Asiedu Nketia is going to enter the witness box. If for some reason, people think John Dramani Mahama being the former president should not be subjected to the rigours of courtroom banter with lawyers, they might elect Asiedu Nketia to be the petitioner. In that case, the Supreme Court will interrogate and decide to change their position. If Asiedu Nketia doesn’t do it, Haruna Iddrisu will be the one. He has been at the forefront of this exercise by the NDC that the election was somehow rigged and that there was cheating so he must be well abreast with the data”, he said on his show. ‘Abayage said Akufo-Addo brought her to overthrow Adda’ – NPP supporters in Upper East
The feud between the faction of the Minister for Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda, and the camp of the Upper East Regional Minister, Tangoba Abayage, is rolling downhill as the pro-Adda group has quoted the Regional Minister in its latest outburst to have said she was tasked by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to bring Adda down. Adda was brought down in June, this year, when Abayage was drawn against the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Navrongo Central Constituency at a parliamentary primary election conducted by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and won. But Abayage’s quest to finish on the “2020 list of first female MP-elects” rather saw her added to “the 2020 list of MP-rejects” as she lost the main parliamentary election— by a “devastating” margin— to Samson Chiragia, the parliamentary candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The faction in support of Adda and the pro-Abayage group were locked in an open vendetta before the primary election and have remained so even after the primary and the main elections. The statement attributed to Abayage— that she was assigned by President Akufo-Addo to topple the Aviation Minister— was parroted at a news conference convened in Navrongo on Monday in response to a presser organised last week against Adda by some electoral area coordinators and polling station executives of the party in support of Abayage. “What eventually broke the camel’s back was when a powerful delegation from the Navrongo Central Constituency went to the Jubilee House to pronounce that our Honourable MP, Joseph Kofi Adda, had lost touch with the grassroots supporters and that his popularity had dwindled to an extent that he could no longer retain the seat for the party. The proponents of this treacherous strategy went ahead and proposed Honourable Tangoba Abayage as a viable candidate for the party, claiming she was a unifier. “Tangoba herself stated on several occasions with her engagement with the media that she was brought by the President to unseat Joseph Kofi Adda. It is, therefore, unfortunate that we are trying hard to use a simple analysis to portray why we lost the 2020 general elections in the constituency when the factors are multifaceted,” Adda’s supporters said in a statement signed by the Pungu Central Electoral Area Coordinator for the NPP, Alan Kwesi Nazantra. “Produce evidence that Adda campaigned against NPP”— Adda’s group challenges Abayage’s camp The pro-Adda group also confronted the Regional Minister’s supporters at the conference with a strong demand to provide “true evidence” to substantiate an allegation they made last week that the outgoing MP waged a post-primary campaign against the NPP in the constituency in the buildup to the December 7 general elections. “The so-called group is made up of few electoral area coordinators and some polling station executives who were bought with money during the primaries and they sold their conscience to Madam Abayage, the constituency executive committee and the Municipal Chief Executive. They do not form half of the total number of the electoral area coordinators and polling station executives in the constituency.” “We are privy to an investigative piece by a journalist which indicates that the so-called video they tendered as evidence of Honourable Joseph Kofi Adda sponsoring the PPP’s parliamentary candidate with Gh¢5,000 and ballot samples was an orchestration by the First Vice Chairman of our party in Navrongo Central in an attempt to blackmail and malign Honourable Joseph Kofi Adda and we dare him to come out and deny it. “It is also blatant falsehood that Honourable Joseph Kofi Adda and his numerous supporters took to the streets of Navrongo to jubilate when Samson Tangombu Chiragia, the NDC candidate, was declared winner, and again we challenge them to come out with evidence. Honourable Joseph Kofi Adda never campaigned against the NPP in Navrongo Central and we challenge them to come out with evidence. It can be recalled that shortly after Honourable Joseph Kofi Adda’s defeat in the parliamentary primaries, he made it clear he was not ready to campaign together with people who were calling him all sorts of names and rained insults on him. His only campaign message in the constituency was ‘Four more for NPP to do more’. We have evidence of Honourable Kofi Adda campaigning vigorously in the Chiana-Paga Constituency for the party. He also supported five other constituencies in the Upper East Region,” the statement, read by Gilbert Baase, said. “Politics of Segregation cost us the Seat”— Adda’s supporters Adda’s camp said the seat slipped from the NPP back to the NDC owing to what they described at the conference as “politics of segregation” and some other factors. “One would have thought that after the primaries, the patrons and elders of the party in the constituency would have apologised to the elephant family for their irresponsible acts to pave way for reconciliation among party supporters but this did not happen. Arrogance, complacency and politics of segregation became the order of the day. Again, patrons and elders, who under normal circumstances would have served as a jury of appeal for aggrieved teams, also got the euphoria and decided to take part in the game.
