The Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo has taken a bold stance against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) practice in the country. Taking her turn before the vetting panel at the Appointments Committee of Parliament on 17 February 2021, the Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency stated that the controversial issue of LGBT is unlawful and has no place in Ghana’s cultural setting. “Mr Chair, the issue of LGBT is an issue that when mentioned, it creates some controversy but what I want to say is that our laws are clear on such practice. It makes it criminal. Section 104 of the Criminal Code prohibits one from having unnatural carnal knowledge with another person. So on the issue of its criminality, it is non-negotiable. “On the issue of our cultural acceptance and norms, these practices are also frowned upon. So for me, these are two distinct clarities on the matter and that is what I strongly stand for,” she explained. Meanwhile, The European Union in Ghana has said it supports the promotion of LGBT1Q rights by local civil society organisations in Ghana. The Union said in a post on Facebook that: “A couple of weeks ago, the EU in Ghana, participated in the opening of the new community space of the @LGBTRightsGhana”. “Equality, tolerance and respect for each other are core values of the EU”, it noted. “The EU supports civil society organisations promoting #LGBTIQ rights, #EU4LGBT”. Push me out of NDC and see what will happen – Koku Anyidoho dares party
Former Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho has called the bluff of the party following its decision to suspend him indefinitely. The NDC in a letter signed by the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia addressed to Mr. Anyidoho, dated 8 February 2021, disclosed that the decision to suspend the latter was reached based on two separate petitions to the party by two registered members of the party. “At the end of its deliberations, the following decisions were taken in accordance with articles 46 (I), 46(6), and 46 (8)(b) of the Party’s Constitution.” “That with immediate effect your membership of the NDC be suspended That the petitions be referred to the Party’s disciplinary committee for further action.” “You are therefore by this letter to take note, and notice is hereby given, that your membership of the NDC is suspended pending the hearing and final determination of the petition against your conduct,” the letter read. Chief Arrested In Contract Killing Plot of Another Chief | Details
A traditional leader and chief of Suisi-Hiono in the Manya Krobo Traditional Area of the Eastern Region was on Monday, February 15 arrested by the Akuse Police after he allegedly tried to hire someone to kill Nene Olepeme Sakinor Nanor I, chief of Okuenya Adadlikuorsi Asafoatse Kwabla Aglah, 50 who is the second accused in the case and his accomplice and first accused in the case, Simon Narhkorli, also 50, a security man who lives at Hwekper, a suburb of Odumase-Krobo, have been provisionally charged with preparation to commit a crime (murder). The chief (Asafoatse Kwabla Aglah) and his accomplice were arrested after the alleged contract killer who is also the witness in the case (name withheld) reported to his would-be victim that the two suspects had contracted him to murder him. According to information gathered, the ‘contract killer’ on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, approached a brother of the chief he was supposed to murder, Sipim Angmor Owuadjao who accompanied him to the chief the next day to inform him of the plot. The contract killer disclosed to Nene Olepeme Sakinor Nanor I, who is now the complainant in the case that Asafoatse Kwabla Aglah and Simon Narhkorli on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, contracted him to kill him for a reward of Ghc20,000 and an acre of land if he succeeds. To underscore their seriousness, the accused persons allegedly gave the contract killer an amount of GHc500 to purchase bullets for the operation. Upon receipt of the information, Nene Olepeme Sakinor Nanor I, lodged an official complaint with the Akuse Police. Investigations commenced into the matter and a Detective with the Ghana Police Service was engaged to liaise with the alleged contract killer and feigned interest in executing the deal. In the course of investigations, the detective together with the alleged contract killer had encounters with the accused persons through face-to-face engagements and phone calls. Police picked up Simon Narhkorli on February 10 and Asafoatse Kwabla Aglah on February 15. While Simon Narhkorli admitted in his investigation caution statement to planning with Asafoatse Kwabla Aglah to contract the witness to kill the complainant, the latter denied involvement in any such plot. The first accused (Simon Narhkorli) on February 12 appeared before a Somanya District Court and was remanded into police custody to reappear on April 9, 2021, with the second accused (Asafoatse Kwabla Aglah) scheduled to appear before the same court today, Wednesday, February 17, 2021. A docket is also being prepared on the case to be forwarded to the Attorney-General’s office for advice. Meanwhile, investigations conducted by GhanaWeb revealed that both suspects are engaged in a legal tussle with the complainant with the second accused recently losing a land litigation case to him and that with the first accused bordering on the destruction of property and theft which is also pending before the same court. MTN donates PPE to Senior High Schools to fight covid-19
MTN Ghana on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, made donations of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to some selected senior high schools across the country as they continue to help in the fight against the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The telecommunications giants made the donations through the MTN Ghana Foundation with staffers visiting the selected schools in the various regions. In the Greater Accra Region, Salem SHS, Kinbu SHS, Accra High SHS, Accra Academy SHS and the Odorgonno SHS benefited from the donations of PPEs. In all, the MTN Ghana Foundation has today donated 2000 pieces of hand sanitizers, soaps, washing basins, boxes of nose masks, as well as thermometer guns. Interacting with the media after the donation at Salem SHS, Education Portfolio Advisor with MTN Ghana, Ebenezer Terkpeh explained that they are giving out the PPEs to help students in the school adhere to the Covid-19 protocols. “We realize most of the schools have these PPEs so what we are doing is we want to enhance and to deepen what they are already observing. That is why we decided to touch them with this little that we have and also to advise them to keep observing the protocols,” he shared. Receiving the PEEs on behalf of Salem SHS, Mr. Robert Vandyck who is the headmaster of the school expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana and its foundation for always having them in mind. “We really do appreciate what they have done for us. We didn’t expect it although with MTN Foundation we have always had a good relationship. “We really appreciate them for thinking of us on this occasion. Minister-designate for Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffuor Awuah has said he is unaware of the phenomenon “protocol” in the public sector recruitment. This was in response to the Bawku Central MP, Mr Mahama Ayariga’s question posed during the nominee’s vetting on Wednesday seeking to know the meaning of protocol involved in recruitment into public agencies. Mr Baffour said he knows no devil called protocol but however indicated that issues of favour in the system has been brought to his attention. “Hon. I’m not responsible for $134 million GCGP judgement debt – says Boakye Agyarko
A former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has denied cancelling Ghana’s Emergency Power Agreement with GCGP Limited which has led to a looming $134 million judgement debt slapped on the country. He said he had no power to do that when he was in office and therefore finds it surprising that he has been linked to the development. The power agreement, signed in 2015, was among those reported to have been cancelled by the former Energy Minister, with the reason that they were not needed and were only going to further lead to the ballooning of Ghana’s debts in the energy sector. GCGP Limited in a ruling secured in its favour from the International Court of Arbitration is to get $134 million and US$30 million in interests from the government of Ghana over the cancellation of the contract. Boakye Agyarko, who was removed from his position in 2018 said on Oman FM on Tuesday [February 16, 2021] that he was in no way involved in the cancellation of the agreement and therefore cannot be held responsible for the judgement debt. “I just realized that they had filed for arbitration on August 11, 2018. This was after I had left the ministry. I never knew they had gone for arbitration. I am told that the government presented itself at the arbitration. How would someone accuse me of cancelling the contract? I have not cancelled any contract, I don’t have the power nor the need or desire to cancel it. I am for what will help Ghana,” he said. Boakye Agyarko’s denial leaves little information on who could perhaps be responsible for the development. Meanwhile, the Institute for Energy Security (IES) has said the US$134 million judgement debt likely to hit the Government of Ghana is one that is damaging to the country’s reputation and finances. Beatrice Annan who is a fellow at the IES told Citi Business News, “it means that the country will have to use taxpayers’ money in excess of US$134 million to pay the foreign entity, which is GPGC. It further means that, as a struggling economy as we are, the government will have to cough up another US$30 million to pay interest.” “Beyond the financial damage that has been caused to the country, it also damages our reputation. I’m not to blame for disenfranchisement in Oti Region, says Dan Botwe
Dan Botwe, Member of Parliament for Okere and Minister-designate for Local Government and Rural Development, said he was not responsible for the disenfranchisement of some communities in the Oti Region in the 2020 parliamentary elections. He rather called on persons who wanted to know why residents in Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe (SALL) in the Region could not vote in the parliamentary elections to direct their enquiries to the Electoral Commission (EC). “The Ministry has nothing to do with the demarcating of constituencies for elections,” Botwe said, adding: “This is purely a matter for the EC.” The SALL in the Guan District were not given the opportunity to vote in the parliamentary elections as there were issues on whether they were to vote at Jasikan or Hohoe. They were only able to vote in the Presidential elections. The voters expressed disappointment in the government for failing to create a constituency for residents of the Guan District despite its creation two years ago. Botwe explained to the Appointments Committee of Parliament, during his vetting on Tuesday, that at least the electorate in the named communities had polling stations on their voter identity cards, and voted in the presidential election. He said the blame being put on the defunct Ministry of Regional Re-organisation, which he headed, for its inability to ensure the electorate in SALL voted stemmed from a deep misunderstanding with no basis. “Linking it to the voting; the Ministry had nothing to do with who should vote in the presidential election. That is purely the work of the Electoral Commission (EC),” Botwe said. He said complaints of who should belong to which region should be directed at the Commission of Inquiry that oversaw the new regions’ referendum. “As soon as a Commission of Inquiry was established, the Ministry didn’t determine those who will be part of the new regions or will not be part. The Ministry doesn’t determine where the referendum will take place. It is the Commission,” Botwe said. He refuted allegations that the new regions were created on tribal lines, saying in reference to multiple ethnic groups staying across different places in Ghana, “anybody stays anywhere.” Botwe cautioned people who called themselves paramount chiefs without proper recourse to their jurisdictions to be mindful of the repercussions. He called on political parties to be strong financially to reduce the monetization of politics and agreed on the need to build consensus among the ministries to tackle environmental and sanitation issues.
