Labour Consultant Austin Gamey has dismissed calls by Bawku Central lawmaker for the extension of the retirement age for public sector workers. The opposition lawmaker who is also lawyer says he will sponsor a private member’s bill to effect a change in the age requirement in the public sector from 60 to 65. “Many people start family life late and their children are mostly still in school when they are compulsorily retired and family incomes are negatively affected with dire consequences for the education of their children. Extended retirement age will ensure that youth are guaranteed family income to sponsor their education. “With improved health care and increased life expectancy, the current compulsory retirement age of 60 years hurts the public service and judiciary and deniers them of healthy, competent and experienced people. And many of them live an additional twenty years or more and become a burden on the pension scheme which has to support them in retirement when they could actually work,” he said during the vetting of the Labour minister-designate Ignatious Baffuor-Awuah Wednesday. Reacting to the call, the labour expect told Starr News extension in the pension age will be inimical to the growth of young people. “It is imprudent at this point in time to raise the retirement age. You have young people who have graduated from school and need jobs to do and you have older people who are staying on and keeping the jobs so what do you do to the young people?”. I do not know anything about that, but if you are referring to favours, that people seek because of perhaps their knowledge with whoever is in charge, I must say that that creates an uneven platform for all persons to compete when there is an offer. Desist from increasing transport fares, GPRTU to drivers
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has cautioned its members to desist from increasing transport fares. The GPRTU says such action will constitute an illegality and has cautioned that drivers who increase fares would be dealt with. This follows a directive from another transport union, the National Association of Concerned Drivers asking its members to increase fares, effective February 22. Some driver associations had threatened to increase transport fares. For instance, the National Association of Concerned Drivers with over 150,000 members has projected a 10% increment in transport fares by next week as members complain about hikes in fuel prices and spare parts. But the GPRTU has called on its members to a ceasefire on the proposed increase in transport fares and not join the other associations. Speaking to Asaase Business, Godfred Abulbire Adogma, general secretary of the GPRTU said, “It is not an authorised 10% increase and what we heard was that this proposed increment is coming from the Association of Concerned Drivers. They are smaller splinter groups. GPRTU has about 90% of the private sector transport in Ghana and we have due process in adjusting our lorry fares. “And our procedure usually begins with a scheduled meeting with the Minister of Transport where go and negotiate accordingly and then approved before we inform our members. GPRTU is now cautioning our drivers all round that if anybody implements this 10% increase in fares that driver will be sanctioned.” On 11 July 2020, transport fares were increased by 15% following the imposition of restrictions on social distancing and the need for commercial transport (trotro) drivers to reduce the number of passengers. Breaking News: Ghana Railway Development CEO is dead
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Railway Development Limited (GRDA)Richard Dombo is dead. According to reports monitored by Apexnewsgh.com, he died of COVID-19 complications on Wednesday, February 17, 2021. Since he tested positive for the virus, Richard Dombo, was on self-isolation at his home until his sudden demise. Before now, he was appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the GRDA CEO in 2017. He is the son of the late Chief Simon Diedong Dombo, one of the founders of the Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition which gave birth to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dombo, until his appointment, served as the operations manager for southwest rail, one of the largest rail operators in the UK, and has played various roles in the sector since 1994.
