NPA reduces GHp17 fuel margin hike to GHp9 effective Wednesday
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has reduced the GHp17 per litre increase in fuel margins to GHp9 pesewas per litre. The price change takes effect from Wednesday, 5 May 2021. A statement issued on 4 May 2021 indicated: “At a meeting held at the Ministry of Energy earlier today between the Hon. Minister of Energy and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), the Association of Oil Marketing Companies (AOMCs), Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Co Ltd (BOST), the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), the Institute for Energy Policies and Research (INSTEPR), it has been agreed as follows; the 17 pesewas per litre increase in fuel margins previously announced by the NPA has been reduced to 9 pesewas per litre effective tomorrow, Wednesday, 5th May 2021”. The initial increase in fuel margins was supposed to take effect on 1 May 2021. However, several groups and individuals opposed the directive. The Institute of Energy Studies (IES), for instance, described the increase in fuel margins as “insensitive and without justification”. Meanwhile, two driver unions – Concerned Drivers Union and True Drivers Union – are rolling out a 40 per cent increase in transport fares by Monday, 10 May 2021, as a consequence. The PRO of Concerned Drivers Union, Mr David Agboado, justified the increment in an interview with Valentina Ofori-Afriyie on Class91.3FM’s mid-day news ‘12Live’ on Tuesday, 4 May 2021, saying from January this year, a gallon of petrol sold at GHS19.45 but has risen to GHS27.58. Also, he said the price of lubricants has risen by 25 per cent. Additionally, Mr Agboada noted that some charges of the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has gone up by 15 per cent while charges at the port, are up by 40 per cent. Cumulatively, Mr Agboada said the cost of running a transportation business is more than 70 per cent but because they are considerate about the plight of Ghanaians, they will increase fares by 40 per cent. Meanwhile, the Senior Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Mr Abass Nurudeen, told the news programme that: “God willing, tomorrow, our leadership will come out with a reasonable percentage”. Frank Annoh-Dompreh majority Chief Whip has tendered an apology for his unnecessary #FixYourself social media post to the countrymen and women campaigning with the hashtag #FixTheCountry. His post has generated some public outcry indicating that some personalities in high positions don’t care for the plight of the ordinary people on the street who could not afford the current living condition in the country. Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said his government has achieved a lot in terms of fighting corruption. In an interview with CNN on Monday, 3 May 2021, President Nana Akufo-Addo said he was content with the progress he has made so far since, in his view, Ghana’s anti-corruption ranking has “gone up several notches.” “Am I satisfied that we’ve been effective? I will say yes”, the President answered a direct question. “A lot has been done, and it is reflected in Ghana’s growing position and rankings of corruption in the world”, he noted. “We’ve gone up several notches since I came into office because we are dealing with these matters at the basic level,” explained the President. According to him, Ghana’s anti-corruption institutions “were very poorly resourced” prior to his assumption of office. “We can talk all we like about corruption and make all the wonderful statements but if the instruments at your disposal for dealing with it are weak and blunt, you will get no result,” Mr Akufo-Addo noted. Concerning the forcing out of Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo, the President said: “There’s a time for retiring which is prescribed by statute, not my making”. “If you are 60 years old, you are no longer supposed to be able to work in the public service”, the public said, adding: “The Auditor-General, like me, should be some of the first to recognise the laws in our country”. A retired educationist Mr. Robert Ajane has said, people of the north owe a lot to the catholic mission because, if not for the sake of the catholic mission people of the north wouldn’t have been educated to express themselves or even share their views on any national issues. “I don’t normally like to start blaming people, but I think it is the colonel government that created that problem. History tells us, that they came through the coast, settled in the south, set up schools and brought a lot of educational development in the south, and the northern territories were left untouched. After some time, the white man discovered that those they trained in the south some went abroad to obtain PhDs and came back and did not strictly obey the colonel masters. So, when they stepped up to the north, today I think it wasn’t a mistake they did that says, we have trained these people in the south and they are doing exactly what we are telling them. In any case, we have found cocoa, found gold and so for the north, we should have a different thing. Train them, they will provide the labour force for the south. Even then, they will not open schools all the north. The missionaries came and drove them away and I think the north owes a lot to the catholic mission, but for the catholic mission, I would have been so illiterate that I would not even be talking to you now. However, he pointed that, it was his birthright to benefit from the 10 million pounds brought by the colonel government to accelerate development which will enable the north to bridge up the gap with the south in terms of development. “That free education was not Ghana government money or Gold coast government money yet, because we were not independent but, Colonel government money which was brought to accelerate development so that the north will bridge up”. He stressed “So, it was the birthright of any northerner including me. If you tell me Ajane, you enjoyed that free education, I would argue with you to the end, I would never agree with you, I would say that was my birthright. What the colonel government didn’t give me and gave to the south, that is what they gave to us. All we now want is, don’t let us quarrel over issues and somebody take a forensic audit to add to the supposed 10 million pounds that were left and see whether that money was exhausted and whether the money was used for which it was given”. “Fortunately, the government of Ghana sensitive and the welfare expert as they have been said, the budget is not finished. Bill Gates and wife announce divorce after 27 years
Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates have announced their divorce after 27 years, saying “we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple”. “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the pair wrote on Twitter. The two met in the late 1980s when Melinda joined Bill’s Microsoft firm. They have three children. They jointly run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The organization has spent billions fighting causes such as infectious diseases and encouraging vaccinations in children. The Gates – along with investor Warren Buffett – are behind the Giving Pledge, which calls on billionaires to commit to giving away the majority of their wealth to good causes. Bill Gates is the fourth-wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes. He made his money through the firm he co-founded in the 1970s, Microsoft, the world’s biggest software company. The pair both posted the statement announcing their divorce on Twitter. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives,” it read. “We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in the next phase of our lives. “We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.” How did they get together? Melinda joined Microsoft as a product manager in 1987, and the two sat together at a business dinner that year in New York. They began dating, but as Bill told a Netflix documentary: “We cared a lot for each other and there were only two possibilities: either, we were going to break up or we were going to get married.” Melinda said she found Bill – methodical it seems even in matters of the heart – writing a list on a whiteboard with the “pros and the cons of getting married”. They got married in 1994 on the Hawaiian island of Lanai, reportedly hiring up all the local helicopters to stop unwanted guests flying over.
