Number of NPP gurus who tried to intervene for Owusu Bempah after bail rejection
The embattled preacher, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah, of the Glorious Word Power Ministries International, has been granted bail but there remains so much about the things that led to his court case, and all the characters who have played roles in it. The ‘president’s pastor’ as he calls himself was arrested in his church on Sunday and put before court the following day. He was remanded for a week, after the Accra Circuit Court 4 refused him bail. He later got that bail but that was not before he was sent to the Police Hospital in Accra for medical attention. It was at the hospital, as mynewsgh.com reports, that several influential names within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), made some attempts to get him released. The report by mynewsGh.com said their sources indicated that, “ Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah was admitted to the Police Hospital Outpatient Unit and was examined by a doctor all without handcuff.” In total, a number of prominent names from the NPP had their own influences in pushing for the clergyman to be released on bail, according to mynewsgh.com. They include Hopeson Adorye, a failed parliamentary aspirant for the Kpone Katamanso constituency, and Ernest Owusu Bempah of the Ghana Gas Company, who are reported to have created a scene at the police hospital when they stormed the police hospital to check on Rev. Owusu Bempah. Speaking on GHOne TV Tuesday, the lead Counsel argued that the flagrant disrespect of the interest of these kids which is paramount per the principles of the law is problematic. He fears the children would be affected psychologically as the case has been advanced further at the Appeals court. “The psychological trauma, the instability, the emotional stress, and those ambits of it, is what is worrying us because these are children, these are young guys, and they’ve started going to school so at the end of the day any such decision will traumatize them. And we think that this is what the AG should have considered. Because if you look at our law – the Children’s Act, Section 2, on the very first principle, it’s clear that in everything that we seek to do the interest of the Child is paramount and even court of law and all other agents of security and all other persons would respect that principle that the interest of a child is paramount. “So we thought that considering this case and their interest in respect of education, the AG would have allowed this to pass and if there is any future advancing of the rules Achimota is using holistically to preserve and protect minority rights like these rights of the Rastas we are talking about it would be looked at but to bring this appeal on and to pile up pressure and emotional stress on the children is unfortunate.” The Achimota School board and the Attorney-General’s Department have filed an appeal to challenge the Human Rights High Court’s order for the school to admit the two dreadlock-wearing students. The Achimota School per the appeal said, the court among other things erred by indicating that the rules and regulations of Achimota School with regard to ensuring uniformity in appearance is unlawful and interferes with the manifestation of one’s religious rights. The school board has therefore filed the appeal to have the entire judgment set aside and the plaintiff ordered to comply with the school’s regulations if he (Tyrone Marhguy) chooses to be a student of the school. The AG’s office has also filed an appeal on the case, asking the court to uphold Achimota School’s arguments and rule in favor of the school. The notice of appeal said the judge who adjudicated that matter and gave victory to the two boys failed to get the plaintiffs to provide evidence of their claims. BREAKING NEWS: Security takes over KNUST campus
The police and the Operation Calm Life team which includes the military will take over the campus of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) from Saturday, September 18. Already, the police water canon has been detailed on campus. The University Relations Office tells TV3’s William Evans-Nkum the directive forms part of a recommendation made by a committee that investigated the July clashes between the University Hall and Unity during the SRC vetting. Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been warned not to remain on campus after midday on Saturday, September 18. Only foreign students and students permitted by management can stay, the regional minister has directed. According to the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), it has picked intelligence that some “unruly” students are planning some disturbances on campus on Friday, the eve of vacation. In a press statement issued on Wednesday by the Head of REGSEC, Simon Osei-Mensah, who is also the Regional Minister, the campus is still a security zone as declared in 2018. “It is instructive to remind the student population that the declaration of the University Campus as a security zone in November 2018, is still in force and, therefore, it is an offence to demonstrate within the security zone,” he stated. The police stormed the church premises of Owusu Bempah to arrest him and his boys on Sunday but it turned out that some police personnel were assaulted. According to the police statement, the injured police personnel have since received medical treatment. On Wednesday, September 15, the man of God was granted bail of GH¢200,000 with two sureties. Ghanaians galled by ‘hypocrite’ Bawumia on hardships – Mahama
Former President John Dramani Mahama says Ghanaians are galled by the hypocrisy shown in government by the Vice President and his economic experts. Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia recently at the Central Regional Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) conference said Ghana’s economy had witnessed one of the lowest inflation rates in about two decades and emphasised that at the peak of the pandemic, inflation was 11.8 percent but dropped to 10 percent in May and further drop to 7 percent as of June 2021. He said the prudent management of the economy had ensured that the overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) excluding oil which declined by 5.8 percent and three percent in the first and second quarters of 2020 had rebound strongly and registered a positive growth of four percent by the last quarter of 2020. Dr Bawumia said the growth momentum had continued in the first quarter of 2021 as the economy registered further non-oil growth of 4.6 percent. But the Presidential Candidate of the NDC in the 2020 elections said Ghanaians have been fooled by the deceptive acts of the so-called economic experts asking them in 2016 to forget about economic statistics and look at the escalation of prices of cement and other products on the market as the basis of economic progress. Be wary of violent extremists in neighbouring countries – Talensi District Police Commander warns
The Talensi District Police Commander in the Upper East Region, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Raymond Gai, has cautioned Ghanaians to be wary of the activities of violent extremists in neighbouring countries and take personal steps to safeguard the security of their respective communities. The Commander made the call at Tongo, the district capital in Talensi District of the Upper East Region during a community engagement organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for youth leaders in the district aimed at curbing violent extremism and its related activities on Wednesday here. DSP Gai said the spate of violent extremisms which were recorded in the neighbouring countries was a threat to the peace and stability the country and, therefore, underscored the urgent need for all Ghanaians to be concerned in order to help maintain the peace of the country. The event themed, “Preventing electoral violence and providing security to the Northern border Regions of Ghana,” had funding support from the European Union (EU). The Police Commander decried the reluctance of some Ghanaians to question the presence of strangers in their various communities and report suspicious characters to the appropriate authorities for investigation. “People do see strange people in their communities and yet they do not try to find out who they are, where they come from and what they do. Sometimes they even offer them accommodation without doing any background checks,” he stressed. The Upper East Regional Director of NCCE, Mr Pontius Pilate Baba Apaabey, noted that the youth especially the elite were the most vulnerable and most of the time fell victim to the temptations of the influence of the violence extremists and the youth must be wary about it. The Regional Director who called on Ghanaians to value the culture diversity that existed in the country to ensure peaceful coexistence and sustainable development added that “the diversity among Ghanaians should be as a tool that could be harnessed for accelerated development and peaceful coexistence.” Mr Frederick Amenga-Etego, a Member of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocesan Mediation Network, urged the youth not to allow conflict to divide them but rather work collectively for the sustainable development of their respective communities. The Talensi District Director of the NCCE, Ms Dorcas Atia, explained that the engagement was part of activities being undertaken to create awareness among youth to be able to identify warning signals of violenT extremism and actions to be taken to curb such activities. Ghana’s Presidential jet being used by Liberia’s President
Ghana’s official Presidential jet, which appears abandoned by President Nana Akufo-Addo, for rented private jets, has been seen in faraway Liberia. The Falcon 900 Ex jet, was seen flying the Liberian President, George Oppong Weah to Ghana for an Emergency ECOWAS Summit in Ghana today, September 15, 2021. The terms and conditions surrounding the use of Ghana’s presidential jet by the Liberian leader, is not yet available. It is also not clear, if Liberia has a presidential jet and what happened to it. President Weah, was being seen off by his ministers at the Liberian airport this morning enroute to Ghana. Recently, the NDC MP for North Tongue, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, released details of another expensive jet rented by President Akufo-Addo to Germany and to the UK. It had a movie theater, a bedroom and a bathroom which has been one of the controversial issues surrounding the disuse of the official jet as suggested by Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul in Parliament in February this year. The latest jet according to the MP, was chartered between US$18,000 and US$22,000 per hour if the Akufo-Addo government did not deal directly with the operators of the LX-DIO, based in Luxembourg. However, if the government dealt directly with Global Jet Luxembourg, then Ghanaian taxpayers, must have paid at least US$14,000 per hour for the use of the airplane. Pictures taken from the interior of the new aircraft, showed it has a shower, a movie room and a bedroom for President Akufo-Addo’s relaxation and entertainment, while airborne. A worried Okudzeto Ablakwa, was forced to scream out “President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is unable to wean himself off his insatiable appetite for ultra-luxury charter jets at the expense of the struggling Ghanaian taxpayer”. “If our government is dealing directly with the operators of the LX-DIO, then it is costing the Ghanaian taxpayer at least US$14,000 per hour. However, if our government is leasing the aircraft via brokers or middlemen as it has gained notoriety in many sectors, you shouldn’t be surprised that the Ghanaian taxpayer is being billed between US$18,000 and US$22,000 per hour”. MMDCEs to support funeral of Regional Minister’s dad with about GH¢50,000?
• MMDAs are asked to contribute towards the funeral of Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah’s father • The MMDAs are paying about GH¢ 50,000 • They have been directed to pay to the Regional Accountant – WRCC (Room 19) by close of Monday, September 20 GhanaWeb has intercepted a letter from the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), asking Metropolitan Municipal District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and Metropolitan Municipal District Chief Directors (MMDCDs) to contribute towards the final funeral rites of the father of the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, popularly known as Kobby. The letter which is on the letterhead of the WRCC dated September 15, 2021, and signed by the Chief Director/RCD, Fredrick Agyemang, is directing all the 14 assemblies in the Western Region to contribute a total of GH¢ 49,000 towards the funeral. The introduction of the said letter suggests that, there have been prior discussions with the deans of all MMDCEs and MMDCDs discussing how best they can support the Regional Minister to give his late father, Nana Boanyina Adusei Mensah II, a befitting burial. GhanaWeb checks reveal that some MCEs are yet to receive the letter but there has been an earlier funeral invitation from the WRCC inviting all the 14 assemblies and their MCEs to the funeral which is slated to take place between September 23 to 25, 2021 at Boanim in the Ashanti Region. “Following a decision with the deans of MMDCEs and MMDCES… it has been decided that your MMDA is to contribute the following amount towards the final funeral rites of the late father of the Hon Regional Minister, Nana Boanyina Adusei Mensah II, Boanimhene…”, the letter directed. It continued: “Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Prestea Huni Valley Municipal, Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal, Ellembelle District and Effia Kwesiminstim Municipal Assemblies [are to pay an amount of] GH¢5,000 each. “Ahanta West Municipal, Wassa Amenfi East Municipal, Wassa Amenfi West Municipal and Jomoro Assemblies [are to pay] GH¢3,500 each. “Wassa East District, Shama District, Wassa Amenfi Central District, Nzema East Municipal and Mpohor District Assemblies [are to pay] GH¢2,000 each.” All monies, the Chief Director instructs, should be paid to the Regional Accountant – WRCC (Room 19) by close of work on Monday, September 20, 2021.
