Minority opposes SIM cards re-registration
The minority in Parliament is making a case against the re-registration of all Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards as directed by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization. The exercise, which started October 1, is in two phases; linking one’s Ghana Card to a SIM card and then physically visiting an agent of a service provider by a SIM card holder for an integration process to be completed. As part of the policy directive from the Ministry, failure to register one’s SIM within a six-month period could lead to one losing their phone numbers entirely. This means that one must have a Ghana Card to be able to register a SIM card. The Minority in Parliament finds this worrying. Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ningo Prampram Constituency and member of the Communications Committee of Parliament, Sam George, said the move is not justified. “In as much as we support any attempts to sanitize the digital ecosystem, we strongly oppose any abuse of policy to unnecessarily inconvenience the citizens of Ghana. We find it most inappropriate that the policy directive issues a fiat of deactivating SIM cards that are not linked to the Ghana Card within the next six months. This we believe is a retrospective application of legislation and a tunnel visioned approach to sanitizing the industry”, he said in a press conference. He said neither the law on the registration of SIM cards nor the law on Ghana Card makes it compulsory for the two to be linked. “The current legislation that backs SIM registration in Ghana is the LI 2006 passed by Parliament in 2011. This legislation saw the registration that happened in 2012. This Legislative instrument does not mandate the linkage of the Ghana Card to activate SIM cards. The National Identification Authority Act, 2006 (Act 707) and LI 2111 which introduces the use of the Ghana Card as the principal document for registration of SIM cards and Bank Accounts amongst others cannot be applied retrospectively to SIM cards that were registered legally and legitimately under the existing Ll 2006. Section 7 of LI 2111 makes the use of the Ghana Card mandatory but does NOT make it the sole card for the purposes of registration.” He said the Passports Office may, taking a cue from this exercise, in the future demand that all passports be “revalidated because a few holders may have falsified the birth certificates or other primary documents used to acquire their passports.” The minority insists it’s not pragmatic to demand that all SIM cards be re-registered because a few were registered “fraudulently” and that “the claim that linking a SIM card to the Ghana Card would prevent fraud is flawed”. Garu: NPP 2020 Parliamentary Candidate for Garu rejected as DCE
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nominee for Garu District Osman Musah, has been rejected by the Assembly Members. UER: ‘Traitors’ in our party, God has seen you- NPP Chairman
Lawyer Anthony Anamoo, Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that members of the party secretly campaigned against the party’s candidates in the 2020 election. According to the chairman, such actions contributed hugely to the abysmal performance the NPP witnessed as a party in the region during the 2020 election. Addressing delegates at the party’s regional annual delegates conference held in Bolgatanga the regional capital, Lawyer Anthony Anamoo said, though vehicles, motorbikes, fuel and other logistics were made available to party activities ahead of the elections, people choose to campaign secretly against NPP parliamentary candidates of their party. An action he said God has seen and will reward those he described as traitors in due time. “It is ungodly for any official of this party to be provided with a means of transport and same with fuel and sometimes money for the official and he turns round to campaign against the same party. This is a sacrilege and it is unbecoming of party officials of this great party. We as humans may not have seen you but almighty God who has his grace on this great party has” he told delegates. He said, even though the party targeted to win seven seats in the region, the outcome turned out abysmal and was followed by calls on Regional Executives of the party to resign. This the Chairman added forms part of the machinations and ungodly acts of some party members. “There has developed in the political lexicon of the region, the concept of no 9, no 10 where some party members for inexplicable reasons decide that they would not campaign for the party’s candidate. They will in broad daylight, be seen campaigning for the party and its candidate then later under the cover of darkness, they will turn to inform voters that all that they said in the daytime, should be disregarded but they should vote skirt and blouse. John Boadu not qualified for NDC’s branch post – Opare Addo
George Opare Addo National Youth Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) opposes that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) General Secretary John Boadu does not even merit to be called branch youth organizer in NDC. According to his argument, the set of executives in the NPP reflects the kind of shallow minds they have as a political party. The NDC National Organiser spoke on Accra-based Adom TV when he made this known in response to Prof Ameyaw Akumfi’s claims that the General Secretary for the NDC jokes too much to be considered for the Chairmanship of the NDC. George Opare Addo cited an example of a narrow-minded Chairman Wontumi who has been allowed to be Chairman for the party in its stronghold, the Ashanti Region indicating that he will not qualify to clean shoes in the NDC. “It’s unfortunate that Ameyaw Akumfi will say that because Ameyaw Akumfi belongs to a political party where in his region, he has Abronye as his Regional Chairman, he belongs to a party whose General Secretary is John Boadu. And I will tell you for free, in the NDC John Boadu is not fit to be a branch youth organizer but he’s the General Secretary of the NPP. Ameyaw Akumfi belongs to a party that has its stronghold’s Chairman as Wontumi. In the NDC Wontumi cannot even clean shoes. They have exhibited over the years that they are narrow-minded but these are leaders in the NPP. Who is the National Chairman of the NPP? What has been his record? Who is the General Secretary of the NPP, who is the Youth Organizer of the NPP? compare and look at Asiedu Nketia and his pedigree. I’m not saying I support him to come and run for National chairman or anything because he’s not said he will run for Chairman but truth be told, the pedigree of the people Ameyaw Akumfi worships as leaders in his party, it will be in his own interest to keep quiet,” he said.
