According to reports, the salaries of the executives of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), have been made open. The report further reveals that the district secretaries of the association receive 10% higher than district directors of education. Meanwhile, a thorough probe shows that a monthly salary amount of Five thousand One Hundred Ghana Cedis (GHS5, 100) is transferred into the individual accounts of GNAT district secretaries across the country. It doesn’t end there, some other additional allowances are paid in addition to the monthly salary quoted above. Teachers who are members of the association are urged to note that the amount quoted only covers the district levels. Gov’t amends 2022 budget to suits Minority demands.
The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia led government, has amended the 2022 budget through the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta considering certain demands already made by Minority Caucus in parliament. In a press conference organized on Monday, 6 December 2021, Mr Ofori-Atta revealed, that he has officially written to the Speaker of parliament concerning the modifications. “On behalf of the President, I have written to the Right Honorable Speaker of Parliament with details of amendments in response to emerging concerns by all stakeholders including the Minority Caucus”, Mr. Ofori-Atta pointed. Below are the modifications: Agyapa Royalties deal: We shall amend paragraphs 442 and 443 to take out references to mineral royalties collateralization. It is important to note that any reference to Agyapa was for informational purposes and, as such, was not reflected in the fiscal framework Tidal Waves disaster: In respect of the unfortunate tidal waves which rendered about 3,000 people homeless in Keta, we shall make the necessary budgetary allocations of at least GHS10 million to complete the Feasibility and Engineering studies for the coastal communities adversely affected. We will broaden the scope of the study to consider a more comprehensive solution to protect Ghana’s 540 Km of coastline, including the 149 Km between Aflao and Prampram. Meanwhile, NADMO has responded to the humanitarian crisis created by the tidal waves on the Keta coastline. Aker Energy transaction: We shall amend paragraph 829 of the 2022 Budget on the acquisition of a stake from Aker Energy and AGM Petroleum by GNPC, to reflect the resolution of Parliament dated 6th July 2021 that “the terms and conditions of the loan for the acquisition of the shares shall be brought to Parliament for consideration pursuant to article 181 of the Constitution; and Benchmark values: We shall avert any hardships to importers and consumers while safeguarding the interest of local manufacturing industries to secure and expand jobs for our people. This administrative exercise, which reviewed 43 out of 81-line items, has the objective to promote local manufacturing and the 1D1F policy, including the assembling of vehicles. It is important to note that this adjustment affects only 11.4% of the total CIF value, of which 50% is for vehicles. From our analysis, the potential increase in retail prices should be relatively insignificant and therefore inflation should be muted. The YouStart policy will also support our accomplished Traders with appropriate training and access to capital to become Manufacturers in order to expand the industrial base of our society and our import substitution strategy, in line with our Ghana Beyond Aid agenda. E-Levy: On the matter of the E-levy, having regard to its serious fiscal implications, we will continue our consultations with the Minority Caucus in Parliament and other relevant stakeholders, with a view to achieving consensus and reverting to the House in the shortest possible time. Mr Ofori-Atta noted: “We will work with the relevant Committees of Parliament to reflect these modifications in the 2022 Budget, as is the usual practice before the Appropriation Bill is passed. Any other concerns which may emerge shall be addressed during the discussions of the estimates by the Committees, as has been the tradition”. Following the stalemate over the budget, the Minority made five demands, which it said needed to be met before it could support the passage of the budget. Others includes: Suspend the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy): The Government should suspend the E-Levy and properly engage stakeholders to agree on a reasonable policy. How can mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments, and inward remittances be charged 1.75 per cent? The policy is not retrogressive, not pro-poor, and does not support the much-touted digitalization agenda and cash-lite economy that we all yearn for. Withdrawal of Agyapa: The NDC Minority will not support any collateralization of our revenues, particularly mineral resources. The future of our country will be bleak if we continue in that regard. We cannot jeopardize the future generations of our country just for our present desires. Provide for Tidal Waves Disaster: The Government should incorporate in its revised Budget adequate measures to address the issue relating to the Tidal Waves Disaster in Keta and other communities. The victims should be supported. And the Phase II of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project must find space in the Budget. Properly re-construct the wording relating to the Aker Energy: Relating to GNPC acquisition of stake from Aker Energy and AGM Petroleum, the revised Budget should reconstruct paragraph 829 of the rejected Budget to reflect the decision of the House as captured on 6th August 2021 Votes and Proceedings of Parliament. 5. Review the Benchmark Value for Imports: Government should, in a revised Budget, reconsider paragraph 247 of the rejected Budget which sought to restore the Benchmark Values of imports by suspending the 50 per cent discount on selected General Goods and the 30 per cent discount on vehicles. Nalerigu: Elderly woman beaten to death over witchcraft accusations
An elderly woman has been lynched in Nalerigu in the North East Region over suspicions of witchcraft. The deceased, identified as Mma Rukaya, moved to the area from Janga, in the same region, because of similar accusations. Speaking to Citi News on the matter, a resident of Nalerigu, Jonathan Nabila, said, “those who beat up the woman claimed she was a witch from Janga.” “They beat her there [at Janga] then she came to Nalerigu and settled here two years ago. The youth followed up and came here to Nalierigu and beat her to death,” he added. According to him, her assailants beat her with sticks and canes. “After they beat her, she collapsed. She wasn’t even taken to the hospital when she passed away,” Mr. Nabila added. The victim’s family came for the body and buried her on Sunday. Police are yet to comment on this incident. Parts of Northern Ghana have witnessed violence related to witchcraft accusations over the years. In April this year, some residents of Nakpali in the Zabzugu District of the Northern Region burned the property of a 68-year-old woman they accused of being a witch. The witchcraft accusations dominated news cycles in August 2020 after 90-year-old Akua Denteh at Kafaba in the Savannah Region was lynched on camera because of claims she was a witch. NPP: Cracks deepens in Navrongo NPP as 4 loyalists of late Kofi Adda sacked from party meeting
It appears the division witnessed in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Navrongo Central during the 2020 general election is deepening as a result of different camps. Four Executive members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Navrongo Constituency were sacked from a party meeting, even after denying T&T meant for them during the Annual Party delegates Conference held on August 24, 2021. According to information gathered by Apexnewsgh.com, all the sacked 4 who believes they were embarrassed instead of giving them their T&T, were loyalists of the late former Member of Parliament for Navrongo Constituency Kofi Adda. The constituency Secretary Mr. Moses Amoah who is supposed to keep records in any organized institution as a secretary said, he was not even invited to the meeting. “The constituency held the annual delegate’s conference in Navrongo on 24th August and during the programme, the party sent {T&T} some money to be given to delegates. The polling station executives were supposed to receive Ghc 50.00 and the coordinators were to receive Ghc 100.00. So, the chairman and the other executives decide to deny some of the polling station executives and some of the electoral areas their money. They were denied their T&T for no reason. And they guys have followed up to take their monies and the chairman refused”. “So, they also wrote a petition and petition the regional executive committees to intervene and collect their monies for them and he still has a problem with that. So yesterday, they called a meeting between constituency executives, party elders, and patrons and electoral area coordinators, which I am not even aware of the meeting as the constituency secretary, the constituency organizer is not even aware of that meeting. And yesterday in that meeting, 4 of those area coordinators who were denied their monies were sacked to move out of the meeting. You can imagine, you denied them their monies, you said you won’t give them their monies and they petition the region to intervene and collect their money and you said No, they shouldn’t have even petition. So, that was the issue”. The Cedi is running, arrest it– Dr. Duffuor to Dr. Bawumia
Kwabena Duffuor, Former Finance Minister has revealed, that the weakness of the Ghana cedi has exposed the Akufo-Addo led government and its economy per Vice-President’s own standard of measurement. Dr. Duffuor, who has made his presidential ambitions public, told his TV station, GHOne, in an interview on Monday, 6 December 2021 monitored by Apexnewsgh.com jab Dr. Bawumia, “Look at the cedi, for example: when I was in office 2012, you needed 1 cedi 88 pesewas to get a dollar but now you need 6 cedis 20 pesewas to get a dollar”. “[A few] years ago, Dr Bawumia said: ‘When the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you’; the exchange has exposed the government now, meaning the fundamentals are weak by Bawumia’s own explanation,” the businessman said. Dr Duffuor noted that “the cedi is running and he Dr Bawumia promised that he will arrest the cedi. Where is he? So, do you think the following year the farmer will go back to the farm again? So, for me, I always pray that there should be a food shortage, then the farmer will make more money and our own rural people will be happy to farm”. He said, he is very excited with the government policy of One District One Warehouse, which to him, will inure to the benefit of farmers as far as hooding their produce is concerned. “That’s why am happy that, the government has these warehouses, so that when they farm they can store the maize in the warehouse and lock it, cause food shortage in the area and when the price goes up, then farmer takes his maize and come and sell and make better money. The Volta Regional Youth Wing of NDC Condemns Barbaric and Ethnocentric Comments of Mathew Opoku Prempreh Against Victims of Tidal waves in Keta The Volta Regional Youth wing of the NDC have noticed with grave concern and worry, a video tape circulating on social media in which the Minister of Energy and MP for Manhyia South, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, a.k.a. Napo was heard making unsavory and senseless comments to the effect that, he will mobilise Kumasi residents to demonstrate against the government, should the finance minister heed to opposition demands to make provisions in the government 2022 budget to alleviate perennial suffering caused by tidal waves on the Eastern Coast of Ghana. NAPO made the irresponsible and condemnable comments following the public outcry over government’s defeaning silence and lack of action that greeted destruction caused by tidal waves to communities such as Anloga, Tegbi, Amutsinu, Agavedzi, Blekusu, Kedzi, Azizadzi, Adina and Denu-Aflao located in the Ketu South, Keta and Anlo Constituencies of the Volta Region. According to this apology of a Minister, he could not understand why his government should make provisions for Keta tidal wave victims on the Eastern Coast of Ghana when that is the stronghold of the NDC! This clearly tell us that, the provision of zero funds in the 2022 budget for the tidal waves victims and same rejected by Parliamnent and deliberate neglect of the Volta region in the NPP government’s development plans was a deliberate discriminatory act. It is crystal clear to us that NPP and it’s leaders do not consider Volta region as part of Ghana hence their actions. We must put on record that whatever discriminative and intimidative war the NPP wishes to wage against the people of the Volta Region, they are bound to fail. We would flourish! NAPO and his appointing authorities should note that: The Volta Region remains an inseparable part of Ghana by law and by origination. 2. The good people of the Volta Region pay tax to government and not opposition parties based in their strongholds. 3. The Volta Region contributes significantly to the country’s GDP. In fact, the region have made and continue to make massive contributions to the development of this country in the fields of human capital development, policy formulation, security, governance, agriculture, mining, legal, and international image build up of Ghana, and we cannot be taken for granted by a grossly corrupt, tribal and insensitive Npp government and its functionaries with bloated ego and exaggerated opinions of themselves. 4. The Region must be accorded its fair share of the national cake including the state’s timely response to debilitating tidal waves that is fast tearing our communities apart. 5. What NAPO should note is that, the people of the Volta /Oti regions which remains the stronghold of the NDC did not complain or demonstrate against the NDC government when President Mahama was spending hundreds of millions of dollars on monumental projects in Ashanti like Kejetia market, Afari military hospital etc. 6. Napo and his cohorts should be reminded that it was the NDC founded by a visionary JJ Rawlings that is responsible for all meaningful infrastructure and developmental projects Ashanti region can boast of throughout the history of the fourth Republic. 7. It must also be noted by the NPP and it’s leaders that we have had enough of their disrespectful and insulting acts and comments against the Chiefs and people of the Volta region including disenfranchising the people of SALL from having a representation in Parliament which was the epic of impunity, lawlessness and sheer disregard for the constitution and dues process under this despotic regime. 8. We call on NAPO to retract his vile, insensitive and ethnocentric comments and render an unqualified apology to the people of the Volta region and Ghana for that matter. In conclusion, we wish to assure the Minority group in Parliament that, we have taken notice of their genuine efforts aimed at fighting for the interest of the Ghanaian people including the victims of tidal waves in the volta region by insisting that our resources be judiciously applied to serve the best interest of Ghanaians and obnoxious taxes like e-levy should be opposed to the last drop of our blood.
