Investigate Alleged Military-Led and Other Killings To Ensure Legitimacy and Trust -Rise-Ghana Appeals To REGSEC and Peace Council
The executive Director for Rise-Ghana Awal Ahmed Kariama in a press statement has appealed to the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Peace Council to thoroughly investigate the alleged military-led and other killings in Bawku and its environs to ensure legitimacy and trust. Esteemed Media Partners Dear Sir/Madam, INVESTIGATE ALLEGED MILITARY-LED AND OTHER KILLINGS TO ENSURE LEGITIMACY AND TRUST -RISE-GHANA APPEALS TO REGSEC AND PEACE COUNCIL. Following early warning signals picked by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC), some security measures were immediately put on the Bawku Township and its environs which led a temporal halt of violent activities and the sporadic firing of fire arms. The preventive diplomacy initiated by the REGSEC must be commended as it helped save lives and property. Sadly, the measure was short lived in preventing the reoccurrence of the conflict which recurred on the 27th December 2021 which reportedly led to the loss of nine lives in the Bawku Municipality. While appealing to the two feuding factions to resort to non-violent means to air their grievances and to stop the criminal act of reprisal attacks on each other, we want call the attention of REGSEC, the National Peace Council and other stakeholders to as a matter of urgency commission investigation into following early warning issues and allegations of human rights violations: Both factions of the conflict have accused the military of shooting to death of unarmed civilians- we call for an independent investigation into this allegation to build trust with the citizens and legitimacy of the actors. Investigate the alleged killing of the two young men from Gambaga around Bugri Corner and shooting of two people in town on the 28th December near the Total Filling Station to restore confidence and prevent reprisal attacks. We call on the REGSEC, Peace Council, Bawku Inter Ethnic Peace Committee to engage the two factions to curtail the growing incidence of hate speech channeled through various social media meant to incite hatred and deepen violent extremism. REGSEC should increase its visibility by strengthening responsiveness and accountability to citizens through regular updates, timely and impartial investigation into occurences to build trust and cooperation of citizens. Lastly, we implore REGSEC and the Peace Council to put in adequate measures to ensure that the temporal lifting ban on wearing smocks for Samanpiid does not serve as a conduit for renewed attacks. Bawku: Pregnant woman killed for refusing to offer direction to suspects
A group calling itself the Concerned Women of Bawku are demanding justice for a pregnant woman who was allegedly murdered by some unknown men in Bawku on Tuesday. The deceased whose name has been given as Rukaya Awudu is said to have been murdered when she declined to give the directions to a certain David’s house to her alleged killers on Tuesday afternoon. Addressing the media on Wednesday evening, Poanab Elizabeth Azonko, leader of the group described the incident as barbaric and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of two persons who they claim murdered Rukaya. Meanwhile, the National Peace Council of Ghana (NPC) has urged the feuding factions in the Bawku crisis to resort to dialogue in settling their differences. On Monday 27th December 2021 reports had it that one person had been killed and several others injured after hours of sporadic shooting in Bawku in the Upper East Region. This incident follows a similar one weeks ago which forced the government to impose a curfew in the area. Reports say the shooting is due to demands from a faction to have the funeral of a chief who passed on 41 years ago performed in the area. On this background, the National Peace Council in a statement said the call for peace goes particularly to the leaders and youth of both sides of the conflict. According to the Council, it has been working with the state partners and those in Civil Society with a continued engagement with the parties through dialogue and other peaceful approaches. “The National Peace Council wishes to call on all sides of the conflict to cease fire and seek nonviolent ways to address their grievances,” the Chairman for NPC, Rev. NER- Chonbosu community lament over clean portable water
Sustainable Development Goal six which targets clean water for all is one of the 17 goals established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. It requires member states to invest in infrastructure provide sanitation facilities encourage hygiene while protecting and restoring the water-related ecosystem in order to meet the target of providing safe affordable drinking water for all by 2030 However residents of Chonbosu, a farming community under Chereponi in the North East region lament over good drinking water. Mr. Inusah Abdul Razak who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Apexnewsgh.com says in this era of COVID-19, with advocacy on washing hands under clean running water, the residents of the community lacks potable clean drinking water and are prone to the virus. He further indicated that residents have to endure walking miles to access water from the well and a small dam which they usually compete with animals.
