Shai Osudoku queen mother threatens election boycott as she demands completion of longstanding infrastructure in the region
The Queen Mother of the Osudoku Traditional Area, Nana Amponsah Dokua III, has issued a stern warning, threatening potential boycotts of the upcoming 2024 elections if the longstanding issue of inadequate road infrastructure in the region is not promptly addressed. Expressing her disappointment, Nana Amponsah Dokua III highlighted the persistent lack of development in Osudoku despite years of voting, specifically pointing out the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their perceived failure to bring essential progress to the area. Nana Amponsah Dokua III stated that Shai Osudoku is filled with discontent, and the traditional leaders find themselves facing a ticking time bomb. She complained that despite unwavering support for the National Democratic Congress since 1992, the area has not seen any significant development. Expressing her frustration, she said, “Shai Osudoku is not happy, and the people, especially the traditional leaders, are sitting on a time bomb. Somebody will ask why nothing is happening in Shai Osudoku, and we have voted for the National Democratic Congress for so many years.” She further warned that if the situation does not improve, they may consider changing their party affiliation or refrain from voting altogether. She particularly highlighted the poor state of the roads in the Osudoku traditional area, emphasizing that there is not a single tarred road in the region. In response, she threatened that they would not vote or allow any ballot boxes into the area if the road infrastructure issue is not addressed. The warning from Nana Amponsah Dokua III serves as a strong message to the government, urging them to take immediate action to address the long-standing issue of inadequate road infrastructure in Osudoku. Consumers to Enjoy Reduced Prices of Diesel and LPG, Petrol Prices Unchanged
From January 16, 2023, consumers can expect a reduction in the prices of diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), thanks to an announcement by the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC). However, the cost of petrol will remain unchanged. The price adjustment is a result of the decrease in the prices of finished products on the global market. This is despite a slight depreciation of the cedi over the last two weeks. COPEC anticipates that the average price of petrol will be GH¢11.71 per litre, while diesel is expected to be sold at GH¢12.13 per litre. LPG prices are projected to be GH¢12.30 per kilogram. This reduction in fuel prices comes after a general decline in the prices of petroleum products in the domestic market at the beginning of 2024. Petrol was priced at an average of GH¢11.80, and diesel was available for GH¢12.25 per litre. LPG, on the other hand, was being sold at GH¢13 per kilogram. In addition to the overall reduction, certain Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) like Star Oil and Zen Petroleum further lowered their fuel prices. This initiative by these OMCs provides further relief to consumers. As a result of these price adjustments, consumers can expect to save money when purchasing diesel and LPG. National Teaching Council Offers Retake Opportunity for Teachers Who Failed Licensure Exams
In an effort to maintain high standards in the teaching profession, the National Teaching Council (NTC) has granted teachers who did not meet the required threshold in the 2023 Teacher Licensure Exams an opportunity to retake the examination in March of this year. The decision comes after approximately 8,000 out of over 20,000 teachers who participated in the exams fell short of the stipulated pass mark. Dr. Christian Addea Poku, the Registrar of the NTC, emphasized the importance of licensing only qualified teachers to be placed in classrooms. He stated that the council’s role is to regulate and license teachers, not limited to those in public schools. Addressing concerns about the employability of those who failed the exams, Dr. Poku clarified that the licensing process opens opportunities beyond public institutions. While some may be absorbed by the Ministry of Education or the Ghana Education Service, the NTC expects that licensed teachers may also find employment opportunities elsewhere. The figures from the 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) 2&3 revealed that over 30 percent of the 20,181 teachers who sat for the exams, specifically 9,556 individuals, failed to meet the pass mark. Adansi Asokwa MP Petitions National Vetting Committee for the Disqualification of All Primary Contenders
The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa constituency, Mr Kobina Tahir Hammond, has submitted a fresh petition to the National Vetting Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) requesting the disqualification of all three contenders in the upcoming parliamentary primaries. This development comes after the dismissal of Hammond’s initial petition to the Ashanti Regional Vetting Committee on January 2, 2024, where he sought the disqualification of his primary opponent, Mr Sammy Binfoh Darkwa. The vetting committee, chaired by NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, had given both candidates the green light to proceed with their campaign for the primary. However, expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome, Mr Hammond has taken the matter to the National Vetting Committee, citing his discontent with the decision made by the regional committee. In his petition, Mr Hammond argues that his opponents, including Sammy Binfoh Darkwa, Managing Director of the Ghana Publishing Company, are ineligible to participate in the parliamentary primaries due to alleged violations of Article 12(4) and (7) of the party’s constitution.
