In a bold and staunch defense of the energy sector’s performance under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh spoke out against recent power outages in various regions, particularly in Greater Accra. Speaking at the inauguration of the NPP campaign team in the Ashanti Region, Dr Opoku Prempeh emphasized the ongoing efforts to address sector challenges and continuously enhance its performance. He highlighted that the energy sector under the NPP government is in a much better state than it was during the tenure of the NDC. Refuting calls for the implementation of a load-shedding timetable to manage power disruptions, Dr. Opoku Prempeh echoed the stance of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that such a timetable is unnecessary. He assured the public that his ministry is committed to improving the energy sector and questioned the intentions behind those calling for a timetable. Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum Promises to Distribute Laptops to Teachers by June
In an effort to bridge the digital divide in education, Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum has announced that all remaining laptops to be distributed to teachers in Ghana will be delivered by June this year. Apexnewsgh reports This comes after concerns were raised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers about over 100,000 public school teachers who have yet to receive the laptops they were deducted for in 2021. The announcement came on the heels of President Akufo-Addo launching the Ghana Smart School project, which aims to distribute 1.3 million tablets to public senior high school and TVET students. However, teacher unions have expressed dismay over the government’s failure to fulfill its promise under the 1 Teacher 1 Laptop project. During an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Adutwum assured that the distribution of the teachers’ devices was almost complete, with only a few remaining to be handed out. He stated that the government, along with the Ghana Education Service, is working to ensure that every teacher receives a laptop by the end of June. President Akufo-Addo has also revealed plans to build at least thirty Smart Schools across Ghana by the end of the year, as part of the Ghana Smart Schools project. This initiative aims to enhance senior high school education by providing teaching and learning management systems, digital learning content, and electronic devices to all senior high and TVET schools nationwide. The project falls in line with the Ministry of Education’s digitalization agenda for pre-tertiary education and supports the government’s vision of leveraging technological advancements to prepare Ghanaian students for the fourth industrial revolution. Following the recent passing of Member of Parliament for Ejisu, John Kumah, on 7th March 2024, the constituency is gearing up for a by-election later this year. Apexnewsgh reports Many names have surfaced as potential candidates for the vacant seat, with former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, emerging as a strong contender. In light of the grieving process within the constituency after the loss of the late Deputy Finance Minister, Nyantakyi has expressed his interest in contesting the by-election. Speaking at the launch of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Campaign team in Kumasi, Nyantakyi subtly hinted at his intentions to participate in the upcoming election, once the official timetable is announced. “The Ejisu by-election will definitely come on, but the timetable has not been published yet so we don’t know those who want to contest. Since I come from there and I have the right to contest, at the right time, we’ll see what will happen,” Nyantakyi stated. However, Nyantakyi also emphasized the need for unity within the party and urged members to support the flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the selection of a running mate. “I think it is a prerogative of the flagbearer to select the running mate, so let’s leave it to him. At the right time, he’ll do that.” As the constituency prepares for the upcoming by-election, the emergence of Nyantakyi as a potential candidate adds an interesting dynamic to the political landscape in Ejisu.
