The 2024 Auditor-General’s report has revealed a troubling security lapse: over 600 firearms are currently being illegally held by civilians whose licenses have expired and have not been renewed. The issue came to light during a Public Accounts Committee sitting on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, where Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and other security agency heads appeared before the Committee. A Committee member highlighted the infraction, noting that the Auditor-General’s report flagged 606 firearms as unlawfully possessed due to license expiration and non-renewal. “We obtained the 606 illegal possession of firearms from the licenses issued from the general counterpull receipts to holders of firearms,” the report stated. IGP Yohuno responded by explaining that the Ghana Police Service is actively compiling a database of all licensed gun holders as recommended by the audit. The police are now sensitizing gun owners to renew their licenses on time, with an ongoing exercise to notify holders when renewal is due. “We are getting the names of all persons so that even when the time is due the police will call you to come renew your license. A River on a Road”: Prof. Millar Laments Horrible Experience on Navrongo–Tumu Road
President of the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies, Prof. David Millar, has recounted what he described as a “horrible and humiliating” experience on the Navrongo–Tumu road , a stretch he says is supposed to link two of Ghana’s oldest regions. Narrating his ordeal in an exclusive interview with Apexnewsgh, Prof. Millar said a journey that should have taken him a few hours turned into an exhausting eight-hour struggle when he got stuck at Navaribie, a community along the road. “I found myself stranded in what looked like a big river, but this was no river, it was supposed to be a motorable road,” he lamented. According to him, the dire situation has forced the local youth to turn the misfortune of road users into an income stream by charging stranded travelers to help them cross. “The young men had created a job out of the bad road. I only managed to get across after offering them GHC 20,” Prof. Millar revealed. She revealed that MASLOC has now resolved to dispose of the vehicle to recover the funds. Miss Mensah further accused the immediate past NPP administration of mismanaging MASLOC, describing the agency as having operated as a “party reward system” rather than a corporate body supporting small businesses. “Under the NPP, MASLOC became a tool to reward party loyalists. Party executives even took group loans in the name of grassroots members. Many beneficiaries have denied receiving any money, yet their names appear in our books as debtors,” she said. Currently, MASLOC owes a staggering GH₵439 million, with only GH₵9 million recovered since the new administration took office. To address the situation, Miss Mensah announced that by October 1, 2025, the Centre will publish the names of all debtors in the national dailies to compel payment.
