According to Nana Akomea, the Director of Campaign Communications for the Bawumia campaign team, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is being utilized by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reshape the party’s image as a more inclusive organization. This is in response to claims made by the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the NPP is predominantly focused on the Akan ethnicity. Akomea suggests that Bawumia’s prominent role within the party serves as proof that the NPP is committed to diversity and inclusivity.

Nana Akomea sees Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, a former deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana, as an ideal candidate for the NPP to rebrand itself and distance from the perception of being an “Akan Party.” Bawumia’s background and achievements, such as his experience in finance and economics, are seen as valuable assets for the NPP in their quest to reshape their image and present a more inclusive party. Akomea believes that Bawumia’s involvement in the party can help dispel the perception that the NPP caters primarily to the Akan ethnic group.

Nana Akomea is suggesting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has often been labeled as an Akan Party by its opponents, implying that only individuals belonging to the Akan ethnic group can lead the party. This branding has been used repeatedly in past elections. However, Nana Akomea believes that by having Dr Bawumia, who is not of Akan descent, as a prominent leader in the party, they can counter this branding and present a more inclusive image to the public.

“Now, you have a candidate like Dr. Bawumia, who would give you a more inclusive branding and would neutralise the NDC’s propaganda”, he noted.

“We have the tool in our hands to change that branding and that is Dr. Bawumia”, Nana Akomea reiterated.

Nana Akomea went on that Dr. Bawumia improved the NPP’s electoral fortunes up north, arguing: “Before he [Bawumia] came, we were not getting those votes”.

Speaking at Joynews Mr. Akomea said, “We believe that if we present him as a presidential candidate, he would, of all the candidates, further the weakening of the Northern Region as a major stronghold of the NDC”
