Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, has issued a warning to the Electoral Commission (EC) regarding the upcoming 2024 general elections.
He expressed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not tolerate a repeat of the issues witnessed in the 2020 elections. During a health walk organized by the Bolgatanga constituency leaders of NDC, Haruna emphasized the party’s demand for free, fair, and credible elections in 2024. He further criticized the EC’s actions a few months ago, stating that they violated the voting rights guaranteed to Ghanaians under Article 42 of the 1992 constitution.
“The right to vote is a constitutional guarantee that ensures the expression of sovereignty and the protection of other rights. Any individual or institution attempting to undermine this right and citizenship should be opposed, and we will fight against them.”
“Did you hear what the Electoral Commission disclosed to Ghanaians a month ago? In the completed voter registration exercise, they registered 910,000 voters, with 61 percent of them being registered through the guarantor’s system. This means that the Electoral Commission and its associates unjustly denied 550,000 deserving Ghanaians the right to register and vote.”
“When we repeatedly told the Electoral Commission that there was nothing wrong with the legal framework they were operating under, we truly meant it,” emphasized Mr. Haruna.
Meanwhile, the Health walk saw an impressive turnout.
