Starting on March 24, 2024, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) in Ghana will freeze the salaries of public sector workers who do not have Ghana Card numbers.
This measure aims to tackle ghost names and improve the credibility of the government’s payroll system. The announcement was made by Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompen, the Controller and Accountant-General, during an event in Accra where the integration of National Identification Authority (NIA) data with the CAGD payroll system was introduced.
Kwaning-Bosompen highlighted the significance of this measure in eliminating fraudulent entries on the government’s payroll, stating that employees without Ghana Cards face the risk of not being paid starting from March 24.
He urged public sector workers to register for their Ghana Cards at any NIA office nationwide to avoid disruptions in their salaries. However, he emphasized that this new linkage between the national payroll and NIA database is intended to enhance existing controls and protocols, rather than replace them, ensuring the creation of a credible database.
