Speaker Bagbin Advocates for Constitutional Reforms Reflective of Ghana’s Reality
In a recent engagement with the Constitutional Review Committee, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, emphasized the critical need for constitutional reforms that align with Ghana’s unique socio-political landscape. Apexnewsgh reports
The meeting, held at Parliament House, was part of the Committee’s nationwide consultations aimed at gathering insights for the constitutional review process.
During this important discussion, Speaker Bagbin urged the Committee members to prioritize Ghana’s national context rather than adopting foreign governance models wholesale. He warned that external systems often complicate local political dynamics instead of resolving them. “Our Constitution must evolve to serve Ghana’s interests and reflect our values, not merely replicate systems that may not fit our cultural and political fabric,” he asserted.
The Speaker further advocated for vital structural reforms within the nation’s electoral and parliamentary frameworks. Among his recommendations was a shift towards proportional representation. He argued that this approach would not only diversify Parliament’s representation—including voices from youth, women, persons with disabilities, and traditional leaders—but also mitigate the excessive influence of partisan politics.
Speaker Bagbin underscored the urgency of regulating political party financing, deeming it essential for promoting transparency and safeguarding democratic integrity. He also called for the enhancement of constitutional institutions such as the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), which he identified as crucial for increasing civic awareness and encouraging participatory governance among citizens.
In response, Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee, expressed his gratitude for the Speaker’s insightful contributions. He acknowledged the complexities involved in the reform process and assured that the committee would carefully consider Speaker Bagbin’s proposals while working towards shaping a more responsive and inclusive Constitution for Ghana.
