The Electoral Commission of Ghana has confirmed Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for a by-election. The announcement comes in response to the unexpected passing of the Member of Parliament, Mr. Ernest Kumi, leaving a significant void in local leadership.
A press release, signed by Chairperson Jean Mensa, officially declared the Akwatia parliamentary seat vacant, in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution. This formal announcement signals the commencement of necessary procedures to fill the seat and restore representation for the constituents.
To facilitate the by-election, the Commission has set a timeline for candidates aspiring to contest for the vacant seat. Nomination filings are scheduled from Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Denkyembour District Office. Candidates can submit their applications each day between the hours of 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM, and again from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Those interested in participating in the by-election must download nomination forms from the Electoral Commission’s official website, available from July 30 through August 13. To ensure a thorough vetting process, each nomination form needs endorsement from two registered voters serving as proposer and seconder, alongside support from 18 additional registered voters from the constituency.
The requirements for candidates are comprehensive and include:
Completed nomination forms submitted in quadruplicate.
Two recent passport-sized photographs featuring a red background.
A filing fee set at GHS 10,000.00, though a reduced fee of GHS 7,500.00 is available for female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Candidates have the option to submit their nomination forms personally or allow their proposer or seconder to deliver them to the Returning Officer at the designated district office.
The Electoral Commission has urged all stakeholders, along with the general public, to take careful note of the timelines and necessary procedures, emphasizing the importance of strict compliance as the constituency prepares for this crucial political transition. In the wake of Mr. Kumi’s passing, the upcoming by-election represents not just a chance for renewal but a vital opportunity for the constituents of Akwatia to have their voices heard once again in Parliament.
