Ghana Pays Tribute to Icons of Diplomacy and Statesmanship

Ghana has honoured some of its most accomplished diplomats and statesmen, celebrating their decades of service to the nation and the world.

The special honours ceremony, which also marked the 101st birthday of legendary diplomat Ambassador Richard Akwei, brought together dignitaries to acknowledge the lasting impact of four distinguished figures whose dedication has shaped Ghana’s foreign policy and international reputation.

Among those recognized was Dr. Obed Asamoah, Ghana’s longest-serving Foreign Minister from 1982 to 1997. Renowned as a prolific author and respected legal mind, Dr. Asamoah also served as Attorney-General, leaving a legacy of legal and diplomatic excellence.

Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, another honouree, is celebrated for his wide-ranging contributions as a diplomat and politician. His service includes roles as Foreign Minister, Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and Member of Parliament for Keta.

The ceremony also paid tribute to Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, a prominent international diplomat whose distinguished career spans appointments as Deputy Foreign Minister, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Executive Secretary of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States, United Nations Special Representative, and African Union High Representative for “Silencing the Guns.”

Rounding out the group of honourees was Ambassador Chris Kpodo, a veteran diplomat who began his career in the Foreign Service in 1973. Ambassador Kpodo served as Deputy Foreign Minister and Ghana’s Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, mentoring generations of young Foreign Service officers along the way.

Organisers of the event stressed that the wisdom and legacy of these statesmen “will not be discarded or discounted,” affirming that their contributions remain foundational to Ghana’s diplomatic heritage.

The recognition event highlighted Ghana’s proud tradition of producing diplomats whose global service continues to inspire future leaders in foreign policy.
