Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely recognized as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is expected to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
This development follows a stern warning from Dr. Dominic Ayine, Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, who announced on Friday, October 3, that Chairman Wontumi would face arrest should he fail to honour the summons. Dr. Ayine confirmed that charges against the NPP Chairman have been formally signed.
The investigation centres on Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to Chairman Wontumi, which is currently under scrutiny for alleged illegal mining operations. According to the Attorney-General, progress on the case had previously been stalled due to the concealment of key documents by individuals from the previous NPP administration.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM on Sunday, October 5, Chairman Wontumi’s legal representative, Andy Appiah Kubi, confirmed that his client would cooperate fully and attend the CID meeting as scheduled. Mr. Kubi expressed surprise at the Attorney-General’s public warning, describing it as unnecessary given Chairman Wontumi’s ongoing cooperation with investigators.
“We will be present at the police CID headquarters in Accra at 10:00 am as requested. While we respect and will honour the invitation, I believe the warning accompanying the announcement was unwarranted. We have no intention of disregarding the invitation,” Mr. Kubi stated.
As the investigation unfolds, all eyes remain on Chairman Wontumi’s appearance and the next steps in the high-profile case.
