Appiatse Explosion: 17 died so far; 59 injured – Gov’t

Seventeen (17) persons have died in a massive explosion that happened at Appiatse, a town between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region yesterday.

A total of Fifty-nine (59) persons were injured out of the 76 that have been rescued so far.

According to a statement issued by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah following the tragedy said: “As at 17:00 hours, a total of seventeen (17) people have, sadly, been confirmed dead, and fifty-nine (59) injured persons had been rescued, bringing to seventy-six (76) the number of persons known, so far, to have been affected by the tragedy.

“Out of the fifty-nine (59) injured persons, forty-two (42) are receiving treatment and some in critical condition.”

“All hospitals within the vicinity are being used to treat injured persons, and an evacuation plan has been activated to move those in critical condition to medical facilities in Accra so they can get the needed assistance.”

However, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has launched investigations into the circumstances that led to the explosion of explosives that were being transported to a mine at Apiate, a town between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region.

“The investigation will among others help the government to determine whether the regulations covering transportation of explosives were complied with and also what led to the unfortunate tragedy,” a statement issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on Thursday, 20 January 2022 said.

The explosion occurred when a truck conveying explosive material for a mining company, a motorcycle, and a third vehicle close to an electronic transformer was involved in an accident leading to the explosion Thursday, 20 January 2022.
The explosion has caused a lot of death and destroyed several properties.
