The High Court in Accra has rejected a request from Oliver Barker-Vormawor’s lawyers to dismiss a GHc10 million defamation lawsuit brought against him by National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah.
The court, presided over by Justice Joseph Adu Agyemang, deemed the application procedurally incorrect and lacking in merit.
Kan Dapaah had filed the suit on September 26, 2024, seeking damages and fees from Barker-Vormawor after he accused the minister and others of offering him money to cease his activism with the #FixTheCountry Movement.
Dissatisfied with Barker-Vormawor’s allegations, Kan Dapaah pursued a defamation case against him.
Kan Dapaah is seeking the following reliefs in his defamation suit:
a. The defendant made defamatory statements without any basis whatsoever.
b. The defendant showed complete recklessness by making defamatory statements without providing any evidence to support them.
c. The plaintiff has never had any other meetings with the defendant besides the second meeting mentioned, whether alone or with others.
d. Despite the plaintiff informing the defendant that the statements are false, the defendant has not offered any apology or retraction. It can be inferred that the defendant has failed to do so due to their indifference to the truth and their malicious and reckless behavior.
