Ghana – South Africa Trade Relations Strengthened President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo praised the increasing influence of South African businesses in Ghana amid calls for greater investment in Ghana.
The two countries have seen a surge in trade, with Ghana exporting a record US$546 million worth of goods to South Africa compared to imports of about US$413 million.
This success is attributed to President Akufo-Addo’s efforts, including the decision to elevate bilateral relations from the Permanent Joint Commission for Co-operation to the Bi-National Commission during President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa’s visit to Ghana in December 2021.
Speaking at the Ghana-South Africa Business Forum in Johannesburg, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of the Bi-National Commission and the establishment of a Joint Trade and Investment Commission.
These initiatives aim to enhance economic and trade relations between the two countries and have already shown positive results. He commended both countries for their commitment to the success of the forum and emphasized the benefits of the AfCFTA agreement in promoting intra-African trade.
President Akufo-Addo also highlighted Ghana’s business-friendly environment and ongoing digitalization efforts to streamline processes and reduce the cost of doing business.
He encouraged South African investors to take advantage of the opportunities in Ghana, citing projects such as the Keta Port Project as areas for potential collaboration. With fiscal incentives and a stable regulatory environment, Ghana is positioning itself as an attractive destination for investment within Africa.
President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in the AfCFTA agreement and the potential for African countries to lead in the global market through increased cooperation and trade.
Ghana’s proactive approach to implementing the agreement, along with the support of South African businesses, is set to bolster economic growth and strengthen ties between the two countries.
