Dr. Omane Boamah has announced that the government is implementing significant measures to retool the Ghana Armed Forces, aiming to ensure peace and security throughout the nation while safeguarding its borders.
In a recent post on his Facebook page, he emphasized, “We’re taking additional significant steps to re-tool the Ghana Armed Forces, ensuring internal peace and security everywhere and safeguarding our territories. The Mahama Government is committed to #ResetGhana, and we’re working tirelessly to make it happen.”
The backdrop of this announcement comes in light of recent violence in the Bawku and Nalerigu areas, where a tragic incident led to the deaths of two senior high school students on July 26, 2025. Following these events, the government has declared a complete ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in Bawku Municipality and its surroundings. Authorities have made it clear that anyone found in possession of such arms will face arrest and prosecution.
To further enhance security, the Minister for the Interior, acting on the advice of the North East Regional Security Council, imposed curfews in both Nalerigu and Bawku from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM, effective from July 27, 2025, until further notice. “Government calls on the Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace,” a government statement urged.
In a coordinated effort to maintain law and order, the Ghana Armed Forces have been ordered to enforce these curfews, marking a shift from peacekeeping to active peace enforcement. This change reflects the urgency of addressing the recent escalations in violence, particularly linked to chieftaincy disputes that threaten the stability of the region.
In response to the violence, the government has also initiated plans to evacuate students from various educational institutions in Bawku, Nalerigu, and other affected areas, ensuring their safety in light of targeted attacks. The government’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, noted that the curfews are designed not only to foster safety but also to create a conducive environment for the evacuation process.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to restoring order, Kwakye Ofosu stated, “The Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property.” The collective actions taken signal a strong resolve to address the unrest and ensure that lasting peace is restored to Bawku and its surrounding communities, as citizens and officials alike work collaboratively toward a safer and stronger Ghana.
