Government to Release First Quarter of DACF – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is set to release the first quarter of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

This decision comes after criticism from the Minority, who accused the Finance Minister of intentionally withholding funds from key government institutions despite clear legal obligations and the availability of resources nearly six months into the new administration.

Speaking during his Thank-You tour of the Bono East Region, President Mahama warned that failure on the part of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to effectively utilize the allocated resources could result in their dismissal.

“The Minister of Finance is about to release the first quarter of the District Assemblies Common Fund. As I said, 80% of the money is going directly to the regions for you to decide how to use it. So, MMDCEs, you have no excuse,” he said.

President Mahama added that the government will send guidelines to the MMDCEs, approved at the last Cabinet meeting, to show how the funds should be disbursed. This will serve as their Key Performance Indicators, and every year, their performance will be assessed, and based on that, the government will decide whether they stay or go.

President Mahama is expected to continue his regional tour, and his announcement on the DACF release is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that local governments have the necessary resources to deliver on their mandates.

The President’s warning to MMDCEs to effectively utilize the funds or risk dismissal, underscores the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency in the use of public funds.
